OK, this really has nothing to do with "trading"....it has to do with how do you guys keep your pins on? the DW got a really nice one last year that she loved and it fell off and now she won't buy anymore because the rubber tab won't hold the pin on. So, any tips on keeping these suckers on?

We carried my son's lanyard in a gallon-sized Ziploc bag when it got too heavy. If you did that, you might not be able to see them as well, but you don't lose them. We don't wear any that we wouldn't be willing to trade.

My DH found a set of backs in a package of several that were metal and they screwed on really tight. They worked like a charm! Even the kids stayed put! We found them at the gift shop at our resort and they weren't too expensive. Happy trading! We had soooo much fun w/ it this past trip!

My best tip is don't wear the ones you love. If I trade for something, or buy a pin that I know I don't want to trade or lose i don't wear it on my laynard in the park.

If you want to wear them all though, I guess the locking ones would be the way to go. I'm just afraid of losing the key. :hammer:

One of the things I do with the rubber backs is to make your own hole. Don't shove it in the pre-made hole, go about a 1/16th of and inch over and make your own. Pressure but not to much or you may bend the pinback.

The locking pin backs mentioned are the best bet. They absolutely don't fall off on their own. You can find them in pin carts and such but you won't see them at "normal" stores like the Emporium. Just hit a pin-specific location and ask for them. They're gold and come in a bag of like a dozen I think.

Yep. DD2.5 wore her pins all week with these. They stick out a bit further than the rubber backs, but they are def. tighter. (I have heard of people losing pins with these too, but who is to say if they were put on properly, etc. I think it would take a lot to have them come off if done right...jmo...) On our 2004 trip, DBIL used them only on the pins that my niece couldn't trade and left the rubber backs on the rest. They are a bit time consuming to put on and off, so keep that in mind.

And the cost? $7.95 for a dozen plus the 'key'. Seems kind of pricey, but at $5-15 per pin, definitely worth it! The 'key' is a teeny allen wrench, so you 'could' find a replacement if needed...Good luck!

When did they switch from the metal backing that always held the pins tight to rubber? And can you get the metal backings too, or are you stuck with the locking ones?

The rubber backings actually do a better job than the non-locking metal backs. All Disney pins are now sold with the rubber backs, and have been for some time. You can't get the original metal backings any more from Disney, though I'm sure you can find them some places, if you desire.
