Tracking Reputation Points Given, not Received

Most of us have encountered the scenario where when motivated to add to someone's reputation, we click on the reputation scales and get the message, "You must spread some reputation around before giving to ______ again."

So, we attempt to duly spread and soon get the message "You have given out too much reputation over the last 24 hours."

Being moved to go back and reward that person for an exceptional post, the following day we return and, the thread being so well received, is still on page one of the particular forum. We return to that person's repuation scales and get the same message, "You must spread some reputation around . . . "

Okay, so my questions to you are these:

How much spreading is enough before a person is allowed to go back to the well?

Is there any way to keep track of whom has been awarded reputation so that a reasonable prediction might be estimated on when enough has been spread for a return?

Have there been modifications so that less reputation can be given on a daily basis? It seems like I used to be able to rep' up 6 or 7 people a day, and now it seems like I hit 3 and on 4 get the "24 hour rule" message.

Thanks for your insights. :wave:

Maybe not that limited, I just tested this (all recipients were deserving!) and I was able to "bump" about six people before I hit the "24 hour rule," but the list of people I couldn't bump until I still do some more spreading is quite a large one.

I´d like to know too. I don´t give too many rep points and when I have tried to give them to people who really deserve them with a good post, it tells me I have to 'spread the love a little more' ;) but it´s been clearly a long while since I gave that person a rep point and I honestly can´t remember when or why.

"How much spreading is enough before a person is allowed to go back to the well?"

It depends on several easy to understand factors. If you give out either too many positive or negative points, you run into the "well limitation factor". Try to balance your assignment of reputation points so that you give both positive and negative. Your own ability to give reputation points is reduced dramatically if you give negative points to a member with positive reputation points and/or if you give positive points to a member with negative reputation points. On the other hand, if you give (i.e. add) positive to positive or negative to negative points, then it's just cumulative. It's just a common arithmetical function. I hope this helps you.

Right, these are the settings that Steve can change:
* Enable User Reputation system
This is the global switch the the reputation system. If you disable this, users will not be able to rate each other nor will their scores be visible.
* Allow Users to Hide Their Reputation
If a user hides their reputation, their reputation level will display "User has disabled reputation". The benefit of this is that it allows users who find the system distasteful can choose to not have their posts rated.
* Default Reputation
This is the reputation score that new users will start out with.
* Number of Reputation Levels to Display
When a user enters their User CP, they will see a list of their most recent reputation ratings. This affects how many of the latest ratings to display.
* Administrator's Reputation Power
If you wish to have administrator's wield a certain reputation power independent of their calculated score, enter it here. Otherwise, set this to 0 and they will use the same calculations as everyone else.
* Register Date Factor
The number of reputation points that a user is able to give or take is dependant on several factors, with the length they have been registered as one of them. A user's power is first initialized at 1 and then this factor and the factors that follow are used to increase it. For example if you set this to 365, every 365 days that the user has been a member of your forum, they would gain one point. So if they have been a member for five years, they would gain 5 points of power for a total of 6.
* Post Count Factor
The amount of posts that a user has can also affect their reputation power. Set this to number of posts that you want to award one point for. For example, set this to 50 and for a user with 500 posts, they would gain 10 points of power.
* Reputation Point Factor
The users current reputation score can also affect their reputation power. Set this to 100 and a user with a reputation of 1000 would gain 10 points of reputation power. If you set any of the power factors to 0, that will effectively remove that factor from having an effect on the user's reputation power.
* Minimum Post Count
If the reputation system is enabled, anyone will be able to rate a post but only users with a post count above the level you set here will be able to actually give points or take points from another user.
* Minimum Reputation Count
As with the post count above, a user must have a reputation above this level to be able to give or take points from another user's score.
* Daily Reputation Clicks Limit
This sets how many unique members that a forum user will be able to rate in any 24 hour period. Administrators can rate as many people as they wish.
* Reputation User Spread
This setting dictates how many unique members that a user must rate before they are able to rate the same member twice. The goal of this setting is to stop a member from either artificially bumping or dropping a user by repeatedly rating their posts.

and a small explanation from a mod somewhere
If the target is the end user, it is quite simple.
If you agree or disagree on a post a certain user made, click the Karma button. There are two options and a comments field. If you agree on what the user wrote, give him positive reputation. Otherwise, give him negative reputation.
Now, vBulletin 3.0.3 has added something new to the postbit: Reputation power. That number represents the ammount of reputation points you can send to/deduct from another member at the time. So if you have a Rep. power of 50, you will send/deduct 50 points to that member.

As to what Steve has set, who knows? (It does feel like it was changed, around the point people were begging for rep)

Can you explain this a little more? It sounds like you are saying that if I give YOU positive points, because you have negative points, I lose or reduce my ability to give positive reputation to others. :veryconfu

I thought i remember Steve saying that we all had so many points/day to give out. The higer your rep (# of green squarea) the more you give at one time. Once you hit your daily limit thats it for the day. (or maybe it wasn't Steve, just somebody else explaining)

I too am having trouble giving rep to deserving people. I get the message thai I have to spread the love first, but I can't remember giving that person rep points in the first place...or am I just getting old and having trouble remembering? :lookaroun

Must be happening to me too - I tried to give some positive rep to you for a very nice deed done but it wouldn't go through. I'll keep trying though - btw, love your signature. Playful yet it has a dark side, feels like my mood for the day!
