Toy Story Mania confirmed

I don't think this ride is being done cheaply or carelessly at all. It's been in development for a while, and it seems to combine several different popular elements in the parks. We've known for some time that screen based attractions seem to be the newest thing, as complex animatronics have come off as underwhelming for the most part.

The 3-d synced animation screen in the pre-show (turtle talk style) was unexpected. Combine that with a moving 3d show, and I expect this ride to be someewhere between Men in Black and Spiderman over at Universal Studios. Sure, it's not a roller coaster - but that, to me, sounds like a pretty cool E-Ticket.

This attraction definately has a lot of potential, even though its screen based. Disney have a lot of very interesting screen techologies at their desposal now, remember when people were fearing how Nemo would turn out? In person, that video display system is incredible.

Let's not be too quick to bash this attraction based on a small concept art graphic and brief description. I think this one needs to be experienced before it can be judged.

Actually Midway Mania sounds very close to a ride I just read about at Jim Hill's site. (Collective groan.)

But don't groan yet...this was supposed to be a ride that happened when Universal Studios opened up IOA and Disney originally thought IOA was going to take a big chunk out of Disney's attendance. So Disney had all these amazing ideas ready to go, should IOA be a huge success. Of course we know it wasn't...but here's the info about the ride that was to be built.

Over at the Disney-MGM Studios, that park's signature attraction -- "The Great Movie Ride" -- would have gotten a massive makeover. In its place, visitors would have been asked to put on 3D glasses before taking a trip through the Chinese Theater's "Villain Ride." Here, WDW visitors would have been menaced by three dimensional recreations of Disney's most famous fiends before the forces of good finally came to their rescue.

Sure, it's changed locations and changed the main theme from Villians to Toy Story (I personally think that the Villians idea is a tad better...but oh well), but this sounds quite like the beginning phases of Toy Story Mania.

Although, once again, it is Jim Hill, so I don't know how well this info holds up.

exactly. I think people are way to quick to cast stones at most new attractions Disney builds nowdays. Especially if they involve characters (and even more so if it involves Pixar characters.)

Edit: I am not picking on just one person, I mean these boards as a whole as of late have been bashing a lot of different things.

I think the only thing that would come close to getting the thumbs up from every member on this board is Beastly Kingdomme. You're not going to please everyone, but so many people seem to be of this misguided notion that choppy moving animatronics, and dated attractions can stand the test of time, change is never necessary - and any sort of story deviation from what was once originally on a plot of land is flat out terrifying.

The only new (completed) attractions that has had legitimate complaints from members of these boards has been Stitch's Great Escape and Journey into Imagination.

People complain about the pixarification of the parks - we forget that all this, "Magic" was started by a mouse, and that Disney at the root of everything is character driven. The newest character entities within the parks are this $100 mil pixar movies that seem to resonate with both young and old. I have yet to see well thought out rationale as to why Disney shouldn't be capitalizing on these obviously popular characters. In a large company like Disney this type of synergy/cross marketing should be expected.

Those that complain about clones like Soarin and Lights Motors Action are hypocriphal if they attend the Magic Kingdom. Remember, when it first opened - there was no Pirates, but so many people requested a clone of the popular Disneyland attraction.

This was once a story that was gathering pace.

Check out http://www.wdwmagic.com/disney_archive1.htm and go to the February 16th 2000 update. The Great Movie Ried seemed to be in real danger around that time.

To those who complain about the concept art, I think it's hard to judge an immersive 3d environment from a small, flat picture. It's going to be something you have to experience before you can judge.

Here is the official description:

http://www.wdwmagic.com/toystorymania.htm

26 January 2007: Toy Story Mania announcement press release

It's the wondrous world of Woody the Cowboy, Buzz Lightyear and Green Army Men. And coming in 2008, guests of Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts get to ride and play inside an energy-filled toybox of fun with the debut on both coasts of "Toy Story Mania."

Celebrating the Disney-Pixar classics "Toy Story" and "Toy Story II," "Toy Story Mania" will take the interactive ride-game experience to exciting new heights. High-tech yet rooted in classic midway games of skill, "Toy Story Mania" will match the delightful characters of the films with games that best suit their very animated personalities.

Fun for the whole family, "Toy Story Mania" will immerse guests of Disney-MGM Studios and Disney's California Adventure into the "Toy Story" world as never before. Donning 3-D glasses, guests shrink to the size of a toy, and hop into fanciful ride vehicles that travel and twist along a colorful midway-themed route. Upon arriving at each game booth, they will aim for animated targets using their own special on-board "toy cannon."

As guests score points, they will be cheered on by favorite "Toy Story" friends like Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Hamm, Bo Peep and the Little Green Men. Hidden targets garner players extra points and lead to different levels of play. The energy of the characters, the competition with other riders and the hilarious, unpredictable game action make this a unique experience that families will want to try again and again.

The attraction features games that audiences of all ages and skills -- from beginner to serious gamer -- can enjoy. No matter how many times guests return to ride and play, they can be sure every ride-through will be different. Players pair up and sit side-by-side for a friendly competition that delivers an ever-changing variety of targets and surprises.

Wow, I had never heard of that idea before. Thanks Nibbles! While I would HATE to see the Great Movie Ride go, I love the idea of a villains ride. It's so unlike anything else Disney has, that I think it would be a huge success. Can you imagine a ride with the technology of Spiderman at IOA but themed to the Disney Villains. That would be amazing.

Very true. I wonder what the opening date will eventually be for this.

No prob.

I hadn't either until someone recently brought up Beastly Kingdom and pulled up an article that Jim Hill did. I had always known what Beastly Kingdom was suposed to have been, but never actually KNEW so I read the article and learned that little tidbit, which I thought sounded an awful lot like the "rumored" Toy Story Mania. They of course had ideas for MK (Fire Mountain) and Epcot (which for Epcot was M:S), and of course Beastly Kingdom was supposed to be the idea for AK at the time. It was a really great article and I learned a lot from it.

My only problem with this ride is how it fits into MGM. this ride will fit perfectly into DCA's Paradise Pier as it is boardwalk games. How does this fit into a movie and tv themed park other than the characters were in a movie. They should have made it a different ride that fits more of the theme of movies and tv shows.

Further moving California Adventure towards becoming MGM-Studios West.

Or is it the other way around this time?

The old fashioned midway theme will fit perfectly in Paradise Pier, since this ride will sit in the boardwalk games and midway themed area. In fact, Toy Story Mania seems designed from the get-go to slot perfectly into Paradise Pier.

But how does an old fashioned midway game ride fit in a movie studio? I'll be interested to see how they get this to work thematically at MGM.

For DCA, Toy Story Mania! is going to be a perfect fit.
