Toy Story Land expansion announced for Disney's Hollywood Studios

Part of me wonders if they purposely delayed it to spread out marketing and focus on Animal Kingdom for 2017.

After it was announced, I know the predominant rumour was they Toy Story would start being built at the new fiscal year (October 2015) for a 2017 opening. Fiscal year came and went as they dragged their feet.
The fact they think TSL is a big enough thing for a 2018 marketing campaign for them is laughable. Even Universal knows Jimmy Fallon is just a small drop coming alongside the real show of Volcano Bay. Same thing could've been done by Disney.

2015 was laughable. Toy Story is a marketing goldmine by comparison.

Universal also shifted a giant turd to 2018 to fill their marketing needs, so.....

I was just thinking about how when this land is done WDW will have four different Toy Story rides altogether. I really hope they are plans to remake or replace Buzz at MK in the near future.

The first bit of track is now in place for Slinky.

If this is the case then whenever someone goes up for helicopter photos they need to photograph the lay-down yard south of the park as it's likely all stacked up there along with a bunch or structural steel for other parts of the project.

BTW this track install is a bit surprising as they are no wheres near ready for track from the recent photos I saw aside from possibly in the station and launch area. I mean the footings for the track behind the Aliens ride don't even exist yet.

The track is in the station. Only about 3 pieces so far.

That doesn't surprise me. There's a lot of electronics in that area of the track so getting them in early means the electricians can keep working and the ride can open earlier that it would otherwise. The track is also going to have roof over it so they likely wanted to get it in before that goes up as well.

A tower crane (akin to the two used for Pandora) will likely not be necessary for this project. All of the track work is relatively low to the ground allowing the project to be completed with low level mobile boom cranes (which I believe is all that was used for SDMT as well).

Permits have already been filed for tower crane foundations. Everything in the permit indicates it's for TSL, although it's possible that it's actually for SWL.

Interesting... it would have made a lot more sense when they still had the trenches in the plans given how the trenches would have made placing some of the thematic elements much more difficult with a traditional mobile crane but for what the plans show now, just seems like it would be overkill...

Disney typically utilizes aspects of fast-track project delivery. It is possible that the decision to use a tower crane was already locked in before such changes were made.
