Tower of Terror Without a Seatbelt!

I recall when the TOT was first running there were no individual seat belts but a pull down lap bar for the row. We have a photo of me, my wife and a friend on the ride. She doesn't weigh much so we were holding her down in her place as the ride makes the drop. Adding seat belts made a much better safety feature.

In fact the ride originally had lap bars and had one seat in the middle that had a seat belt.

It was quite common to hear of the seat belt person unlatching to gain some air time back when the attraction first opened. I guess that's why I do not feel so shocked and appalled at this video as some of you seem to feel now.

Unfortunately - safety rules and harnesses are designed for the "lowest common denominator" - like the guy in the video.

So when Tot comes out with some kind of shoulder harness - or with the new bars in Splash Mtn - you now know who to blame.

I just stumbled upon this video and have never seen it talked about here. How in the world did the ride operator not catch this? I really hope they were caught and thrown out of the park.

and THESE are partly the reason that cause stuff like lap bars on Splash Mountain.. :brick:

Wouldn't be surprised if they get seatbelts for Carousel of Progress anytime soon!

I disagree. A lap bar ensures everyone uses it. As previously said, you're not going to have significant horizontal motion anyway. And in my opinion, a LOT more comfortable and sanitary than seat belts. And faster load/unload.

(As long as it's not the lap bars on the old Universal Back to the Future: The Ride. One of my favorite rides ever, but I swear, if they ever had a lengthy breakdown they would have had to amputate from the thighs down because they pressed so hard. And I had a 19 BMI back then!)

I believe that the level of immaturity and rebellion needed for this type of behavior is inexcusable. I find it neither humorous nor commendable in any way. If anyone here were to visit WDW with me (wait, that would make you all interlopers), you would find me to be a goofball who enjoys the day as though he were a teenager. However, transgressing against established rules at a theme park when on the rides almost always ruins things for everyone within time. If a ride as tame as the TTA had seat belts, one would have to assume that there was a good reason for them. If it were unacceptable to anyone, the simple solution would be to stay off of the ride. Moronic, attention-starved imbeciles like the man in the featured video should stick to jumping off their roofs while on a pogo stick and submitting the video to AFV.

Things like this always take me back to the moment Splash stopped mid-ride and then over the tanoy came the announcement:

'Will the women with the umbrella please put it away.'
