Tower of Terror Question

I'm embarrassed to admit that with all the times we've been to WDW I have never gone on the Tower of Terror. I am absolutely terrified to go on it. I guess I'm just not a thrill ride person (it took my husband 5 years to get me on Splash Mountain). My thing is, my husband is on a campaign to get me on ToT during our upcoming trip. He promises me that I will survive, that the drops happen very quickly and that you can feel the brakes hitting almost immediately. He also says the special effects make it worth it. My question is, if I can handle the drop on Splash Mountain (I don't love it but I do it) do you think I can handle ToT or should I avoid it at all costs?

Thank you for your help.

Well, your husband is right that the drops go by very quickly and the breaking systems kick in very fast. I'm afraid that I've never been on Splash Mtn. so I can't really compare the two, but I consider ToT to be more of a psychological thrill than anything. I think the worst part of the ride is right before the drop sequence starts and you know it's going to drop, but you don't know when.

Hope this helps. :)

I think Splash Mountain is worse. When I am on TOT it seems like the elevator is going a regular elevator speed in a regular building. You will last its the effects and the building itself that mkes it seem scary but its really not.
Good Luck. You will love it.

ToT is probably a bit more intense than Splash Mountain, but the the special effects, storyline, detail, and overall eerie mood make it a must-ride. I would honestly say that ToT is perhaps Disney's greatest achievement, (perhaps tied with Indy), just because of the attributes listed above. The thrill factor is not tremendous, and it is over fast... the surroundings make it look much scarier than it actually is, so don't freak out in the waiting area- you'll survive! Overall, I'd say you would be a FOOL to miss ToT. It's just plain fun!

I was deathly afraid of ToT until I pressured to ride by my friends. It is now my favorite ride! I think that Splash Mountain is worse. Surprisingly, I find it easier to fall straight down in the dark (where you can't tell where you are) versus falling forward in a log (where you can see everything as it happens). Intensity wise, I find Rock'n'Roller Coaster more intense than ToT. ToT is a unique experience and over very quickly. I say give it a try. You may be missing out on your favorite attraction! And if you hate it, at least you will have bragging rights that you tried it.

So far everything that's been said supports my husband's position. I'm going to try it. Wish me luck!

Thanks so much for your help.

Have fun!! By the way... I noticed that you've been to the Polynesian, WL, and CBR. How do they compare? I've been to the Polynesian twice and going again because it's on the monorail, but my friend is going to CBR while I'm at WDW... do you think CBR is a good place for a first-time Disney visitor? Does it feel safe and clean and away from reality?

DO NOT RIDE IT!!!

I have been on it once and only once...it is by far the scariest experience I've ever been through...I still have nightmares about it and I get flashbacks of the drops whenever I look at the building!

It really screwed me up and if I can prevent it happening to someone else...I will!

(BTW...just kidding...just trying to make it a little harder for your hubby :) GO FOR IT!!!)

I have an intense fear of heights and falling, but I absolutely love Tower of Terror and most thrill rides (probably because since I'm strapped in I know I'm basically safe). If I can do it, anyone can.

If your husband was a real man he would have forced you onto the ride already  J/K

Honestly, I was a chicken when I was little, cause I thought I would DIE on a ride. Now as an adult I know better and go on everything. I don't think there isn't anything I wouldn't do.

When I started going on all the big roller coasters about 6 years ago, I was nervous, but I had such a good time, I was no longer nervous and it gave me so much enjoyment.

Just think - are you going to get injuried? No, so go on it, why deprive yourself of such an incredible experience.

You can let fear paralyze you and sit on the sidelines or be part of the action. I also always try to remember this about anything I do in life:

Imagine yourself on your death bed (I know, morbid thought), but at that point, nothing else matters except for what you did/accomplished in life. Don't live your life regretting NOT doing something you wish you could have done. :D :D :D

I just noticed, you are a New Yorker (I'm a ex NY'er). There's no excuse for a NY'er being a scaredy cat. Only people from Boston (Red Sox fans) are allowed to be wimps :p :p :p

Alexandra, I am the same way!! I have been to WDW more times than I can count, but I have never been on TOT because I am deathly afraid of that falling sensation. Like you, I can tolerate Splash Mountain, but I don't like the fall!!! I really, really want to try TOT and also Dr. Doom at IOA but I need some convincing. =) I once made it all the way into the Boiler Room at TOT, but had to take the chicken-out elevator! I would love to hear about your experience on the ride when you get back. I think input from a fellow "drop hater" would help me!

CHICKENS UNITE!!!

Don't worry

The ToT may look creepy on the outside and sometimes on the inside. But when your on the ride the special effects, story, and everything else will distract you so well that you won't even know that you're about to fall, and also the drop is only a few seconds and you won't even see anything while your dropping. I hope this can serve you well on your journey to... THE TWILIGHT ZONE (insert creepy music here).

You're right about us New Yorkers not being scaredy cats! I am proud to say that I have absolutely no fear of going on It's a Small World! I'm also not afraid to step foot in Yankee Stadium, ESPECIALLY in October. :king:

PhilosophyMagic, in response to your question about CBR, yes, it's a great place for a first-time WDW visitor. It's absolutely beautiful, clean and definitely a part of the Disney magic. So far, my favorite is a toss-up between the WL and the AKL. When you walk into the lobby of the WL, I swear it takes your breath away. The AKL is similar because it was designed by the same archictect but obviously the theme is different. As long as you're staying on Disney property you will experience the feeling of not being the "real" world. What's not to love?!

WDWFreak53, when I read your post (before I got to the end) I went running to my husband and said, "You see! You see! Now I'm definitely not going on it!" My husbands calmly points out your last comment and replies, "You're going on it. There's no way out."

Anyway, thanks again for your support, everyone. I'll be sure to report back if I'm still breathing.

No way out...no way out...no way out...

How many do you have?!?!?!? Sheesh...you have multiple partners but won't go on the Tower??? :lookaroun (jk btw).

Oh...and learn that phrase well "No way out"...and know that'll be running through your head when those elevator doors close...and you start up the shaft ;)

MUAH AH AHHHHHH

This...as you may notice...is a weird Magic member...and I will take you straight into... *lightning strikes* THE FREAKY ZONE...

The adrenaline rush you get from ToT is so unique and unexplainable. You truly are missing out if you do not ride. It is one the best rides ever created! I agree...GO FOR IT!! :sohappy: :sohappy:

Weird when i was littler i cried when i came out of TOT but now i love it!!!!!!! I think that i cried because i didn't know what to expect none of us did... we were not the true Disney fans we are now! But that all changed... I didn't go on again for the next trip but the year after that i had the guts to try it again and needless to say i was older and understood the plot and story line and I love the twilight Zone so I had to try it again... I not only loved it we went on 2 more times in a row!!!!!!GREAT RIDE you will love it if you're old enough to appreciate the great detail put into the hollywood tower of terror!!!

Ah, the Dr. Doom Fearfall at IoA had me a bit freaked, then I saw I would be riding with a very cute girl, let me tell you, I became really brave in a matter of seconds  ..... ok back on topic, it's not that bad... I was afraid when it opened but my first ride was GREAT. I was a little kid and remember yelling "THAT WAS GREAT! LETS DO IT AGAIN!" and everyone started laughing. Just do it, trust me, it'll be worth it.

Alexandra.. dont worry.. I was afraid to go on ToT in 2000 and my mom made me go on.. however I did get a reward out of it.. she kinda bribed me lol! Anways... the special effects are great and the ride is over so fast you dont even have time to be scared! I love ToT now!! The next year I went to Disney with a friend and she thought I was still scared to go on ToT so she "bribed" me with treating me to lunch if I went on with her.. lol  Little did she know that I was over my fear.. but hey I got a free meal out of it! Now everyone in my family know's that im no longer afraid and I guess the incentive of riding has been lost however I still get the thrill of it.. like I said.. dont worry.. just do it.. you will have a blast!!! :p
