Yes you are seated, and the ride is very smooth. As for how scary the ride is I can't really answer that. Everyone reacts differently towards the ride.cannp123165 said:

The Tower of Terror happens to be my favorite ride. I've been on it 51 times. The drops are smooth, and for me, it is more of a thrill than a scare. It gives you a rush. Ride it. You won't regret it.

Smooth = It has very smooth drops.
Seated = Yes and are wearing seatbelts.
Scary = I think it is very scary - but still fun. I am not always in the mood to ride. I can chicken out at times for this one! (Not always though

Well after the ghosts start attacking you and scaring the hell out of you the elevator starts shaking like crazy and next thing you know you start shooting up and down and feel completly helpless. Seat belts provide no support as you act as a pinball going up and down while you wish you never got on in the first place.

Since its revamp, ive found it to be much less scary (however this could just be the random factor - pulled a short straw). I recomend it. I skipped it for out of fear till i was 15 and i regret it everytime i ride it now.

I believe the "scariest" part of the entire ride is the whole preshow hype. As said before, the drops themselves are not all that scary. They will however get your blood rushing.

You are seated at all times once onboard the elevator. The drops are very smooth, but if you are prone to motion sickness, clausterphobia (SP?), or have a fear of heights, I highly suggest that you go through the queue just to see the awesome theming, and maybe take the express elevator down.
I wouldn't consider it "scary", just the anticipation can be overwhelming at times.

I have a big fear of heights (screamed to get off The Kissing Tower at Hershey Park), But I loved ToT!! The Preshow and the anticipation are what gets you!! Just like Mission Space!!! Unlike Rockin' Rollercoaster there was no scary Preshow to get you panicked and that scared me more than ToT!!! I love to ride it at least 10 times every visit!!!! Try it...you'll like it!!!

Its my favourite ride in all WDW.
Is it scary, not really, the first time i was a bit scared, and totally freaked out when the car moved in a direction i wasn't expectin (you all know what I mean with out giving it away).
Ride it you will love it, best themed ride in all of WDW, and version 4 is fantastic, everytime the drop sequence is about to start I get goosebumps, then Whoosh! Up, or down! LOVE IT!

I don't like heights or coasters and I loved ToT! I'm not a screamer, but I screamed on this ride! It was a lot of fun. I have been afraid to try it for years and finally tried it in 2005. The theming is awesome. Definately worth it! Yes, the drops are smooth and not jerky. I wanted off it when we were going to the drop shaft, but glad I stayed on. (like I had a choice!)
