ToT chickens

I have a hate/love relationship with this ride. I love the first part of going thru the lobby, into the library with the TV, and then in the furnace room, but I hate the drop (I've always hated drops - especially in roller coasters). I have heard you can enjoy the first part and there is a chicken door just before getting on the elevator. Is this true? Do many people use it? Has anyone here used it and how do you get to it?

It's true! I believe it is actually a chicken out elevator. It sits right in the middle of the second and third loading doors. Just tell a cast member you have chickened out and they'll hook you up.

I used it. When it came time to actually get on the ride I chickened out. So when the Cast Member asked how many were in our party, I told him I changed my mind. He asked me to step aside and then I got on a regular elevator and went down. The Cast Member in the elevator said to me "well at least you can say you rode in an elevator".

I am VERY prone to motion sickness and am terrified of heights but on our Honeymoon visit to The World back in 2005 I was determined to conquer my fear of both heights and thrill rides by riding Tot. I cannot begin to tell you how terrified I was waiting in line, I felt like a prisoner on death row waiting to be executed, and actually came close to passing out in line out of shear terror(of the Tower ). I can't tell you how hard I had to resist taking the "chicken exit" but I didn't, I was determined to conquer this fear.

As I sat down in the elevator my heart was about to pound out of my chest and just knew I would never see my wife again because I was going to die of a heart attack.

Long story short, I ended up loving it. I felt such an amazing sense of accomplishment. I am still terrified of heights(but not as much as before) and I still get very nauseus on most of WDW's more thrilling rides but I have actually grown to love them, especially Tower Of Terror(still haven't done RnRc yet but plan to do it in April),I should own stock in Dramamine though, my wife and I take a suitcase full of it everytime we go. I would love to be able to ride the "non-poultry" version of Mission Space but I still have waaay too many feathers to attempt it.

I am the biggest chicken on the planet when it comes to thrill rides but if I can do it ANYONE can! Just pop some dramamine, pray REALLY hard and hop on board! If you do still chicken out, don't worry, I'll still understand. :wave:

I hate drops also, i love rock n roller coaster because its lack of them. Tower of terror is something i will do once every few years cause it is so well themed you can't miss out on it.

I love ToT up until the drop. I think the special effect with the disappearing family is so cool, but I'm already in a cold-sweat because I absolutely hate the drops. Ah well, I've survived it 3 times and hopefully won't chicken out this time.

And P.S. to Fizzle75: Rock n' Roller Coaster is MUCH easier to take than ToT, in my opinion. Just be sure to sit as close to the front as you can. I got stuck in the back row one time and had a much bumpier ride. The most exhilarating part is the fast acceleration, then it feels like you're flying from there on out. You won't even notice you're upside down, and you don't feel any drops at all.

When my oldest DS was little, he would NOT go on this ride. We would all wait in line together and then one of us would take him out "the chicken door".

KUDOS to you for addressing a personal fear. We all have them, but it takes a lot of courage to beat them! I had friends in high school that "helped" me conquer my fear of coasters. Though their tactics were less than acceptable (it was HS), there effort couldn't be thanked enough as I love all those rides. I too take the chewable Dramamine to WDW due to sinus issues that effect my ears a bit.

My point for commenting (other than to give you your kudos), is to mention the MS:Red (you implied you've been on MS:Green). On MS, the ride is based on a centrefuge so it takes time to ramp up & down the rotational speed. What this means is a smoother ride as G's increase and decrease. It is not accessive and due to the nature of the ride, very well timed. With the video rolling, you think you feel more G's than are really applied. But I let myself forget that and just enjoy the Imagineer's hard work.

As far as R'n'R, it is a bit rough since you can't see all the turns approaching and it does have inverted loops. Take your "dram" and DO NOT go on if you've been in extreme heat. Cool off first so you're less prone to nausea.

Thanks for the info - and fizzle, I was also like you and did it ONCE - to say that I did and know what everyone was talking about. I remember standing in line and being scared to death. I was told the "it was no big deal" and "fun" and "you don't even know you're falling" crap. Believe me, it was a big deal, I didn't have fun, and I knew I was falling every millisecond. I barely remember the special affects because I was too worried about the drop.
To me the ToT was just like joining the army - glad I did it, but won't do it again...:animwink:

I used the "chicken exit" for ToT once. I got to enjoy the entire queue, and then when it was time to actually get on the ride, I just told the CM that I didn't want to ride.

It was kind of humorous, because the CM that took me (and another guest) out the chicken exit stayed very much in character. As the elevator doors began to shut he screamed "I tricked you!" and let out an evil laugh.

I have an intense fear of heights/falling.....mostly the falling part. I did ToT once, also. I won't do it again, either. I was so terrified during the whole thing. I was not able to say any undisney-like words, as I was unable to speak. I started screaming, but after about 10 seconds, I wasn't even able to scream. That is just how scared I was. I'm glad I did it once, but there will not be a second time.

Oh man I have the same love hate thing going on with this ride.
My husband says it is cause I am getting old! I'm only 28... ok I am getting up there... but anyways... hehe

I just get like massive anxiety during the whole freggin wait and lots during the part when the elevator comes out and moves around... freaks me out... and I usually love it once I am OFF, but I have noticed that I dont like the falling feeling anymore. When it first came out I was all about "let's go again!" Now, I don;t really wanna go on it. I prefer a rollercoaster. I love the speed and the loops but the striahgt falling... not so much anymore..
Still a great ride but just not my cup O beer anymore :shrug:

Tower is no problem for me, Rock n roll coaster is a whole other story. I thought I was going to die on the ride, shook for an hour after I got off and actually cried coming off the ride. I will not ever ride it again! Something about going upside down on a coaster just does me in. Don't believe those who say you won't feel yourself going upside down because you will. If I hear the song "Love in an Elevator" I start to feel sick :hurl: . Never again!!!

My poor DS freaked out in ToT before we got on (he wasn't the only one), so some very nice CMs showed us the "chicken" elevator. They made sure my DS understood it was a "regular" elevator and not the scary one.

Personnaly, I love the ride. I think if he got past the scary theming, he would love it also.

We now jokingly call it The Ride That Shall Be Named. :lol:

I have a love/hate relationship with this ride as well. The outside and lobby are nicely themed, I love the Rod Serling video in the library, but the elevator part itself has never impressed me (or even remotely frightened me). The fifth demension room is fine (California Adventure didn't even bother to put this part in!), but my personal opinion is that this ride truly misses its potential by rushing to the cheesy and very controlled-feeling drop 'em and lift 'em and drop 'em and lift 'em and...portion that really constitutes the bulk of the "experience." Then, there's the lack of a decent resolution to this Twilight Zone episode beyond Rod telling you to stay out of elevators in haunted hotels. Whoopee. So, for me, the attraction pretty much ends the moment the video does in the library. I know most will disagree with this, and I can understand how it might scare some, but for me this attraction is one of the weakest overall in the Disney-MGM Studios...topped only by LMA.

Nice to know there is a 'chicken door'. My sister-in-law does not do drops in any way, shape or form. And this way she can stay with us during the que and not wait outside the ride. The que is great. I love drops, on this and coasters. The first time I road it thought, it was back when there was only one drop.
My favorite part was the 'star field' in the first elevator. A really cool effect and totally unexpected. However, on my second trip to DS, it wasn't there. Maybe it was not working that day. Do they still have the 'star field'?
Also, my brother takes offense to the term, 'ToT chicken', he's a 'ToT rooster'.

My youngest (12 back in 2000) and ex went with me through the first part but when we got to the ride part, they chickened out. Now mind you, through the entire stay, my youngest would ask CMs if the ride we were getting on was fast or scary. So when they chicken out the CM escorted them to that elevator and just as the doors closed was asked about the elevator. The CM told her that the one they were on was faster than the one (the ride) Iwas on.:ROFLOL:My ex was laughing her butt off watching my daughter panic a bit until it started moving and she found it to be a regular elevator. All I heard from my daughter while my ex was telling me about it was "shut up, mom!" over and over again.
