Tornado's

Well yeah you could say the end of tornado season is the end of june but every now and then you do have a few that sprout out shock a few people. We lived that terror in October that destroyed a few houses here.

That is about the only thing that I dont miss since moving from TX. I survived 2 of them without ds, he already moved. I had to spend 2 different night in the tornado closet with the 3 little ds. My neighbor risked his life to tell me since I didnt really know what the siren meant. Our town had over 1 million in damage. Our friends lost their home in the next town. Our new library was so damaged and they had to pull ceiling tiles off our friends son. Saying a prayer for everyone out there.

Yep- nothing is ever absolute. In addition to that, there are the dozens which spring from the hurricanes when those hit in the fall. But the official "Tornado Season" is April through June.

I'd have to say that a tornado is one of the scariest things I've been thru (and it was a small one compared to what the midwest gets). Stay safe everyone.

Here in Alabama we have 2 tornado seasons. We are the only places (Ms, and a couple of others in the area included), that have a secondary severe weather season in the world (according to our weather man. lol). So far this season, we've been lucky. No bad weather at all. I hope it calms down soon for ya'll up there.

Oh yeah. Its bad. There is some destruction, and death. Not good. Obviously it is tornado season. But three within the last three days. That is really weird. :lookaroun

Has anyone else noticed a weird trend in the severe weather being more...well severe lately? I can't tell if that really is the case or are we just getting better news reporting than we used to?
Also it seems like places that aren't usually hit by tornadoes, hurricanes, etc are starting to experience them as well.

As far as the Midwest goes, I'm still not sure that this is worse than usual- I've lived here all my life (ok, so 26 and 3/4 years is not THAT long, but it is to me!) and for as long as I can remember, we've had springs filled with tornado watches and warnings, and seen the effects of touch-downs on tv. It's probably the reason that tornadoes are one of my biggest fears- so many years of seeing footage of twisted trees, demolished homes and cars in places they don't belong.

I will say that our sirens have been going off more the past couple of years, but I attribute that to better science. None of those sirens resulted in any tornadoes, BTW. Knock on wood. There was a funnel reported at my intersection last year, but it never touched down. THANK GOD!!

Here's a pretty cool site. You can find out how many tornadoes hit your area between 1950-1995. http://www.tornadoproject.com/ You can also click on "recent tornadoes" to track what is happening this year.

Yeah... The Fujita Scale goes up to 6. But F5's and F6's are very rare and almost never happen. F4 is about the highest we ever really use and have scene. F5 & F6 is like fairy tale material.

(Yep, I am a dork and attended Tom Skilling's severe weather seminar a couple of weeks ago. ) ;)

I plan on going on a storm chasing trip next year! :sohappy: :sohappy:

Just an Update on the Utica situation :( :

President declares tornado-ravaged counties federal disaster areas

(Utica-AP) -- President Bush today declared four counties in
north-central Illinois a federal disaster area after tornadoes that
killed eight people and damaged hundreds of homes.
Federal Homeland Security Undersecretary Mike Brown says Bush signed the disaster declaration on Air Force One -- making LaSalle, Putnam, Will and Kankakee counties eligible for federal assistance.
Brown toured Utica's (YOO'-ti-kuhz) downtown today with Governor Rod Blagojevich (bluh-GOY'-uh-vitch), Senator ________ Durbin and other official. And he says he was encouraged by what he saw, with business owners already starting to rebuild.
Blagojevich had included Grundy County in his request for a
disaster declaration, and federal officials say it could be added
later.
