Tornado Season 2013

Back in 2008 there were a series of thunderstorms, tonadoes, heavy rains, etc over the course of just a couple of days. Lake Delton, a man made lake, had it's dam break, and the entire lake emptied into the Wisconsin River. The entire lake was drained, and many roads, trees, and entire houses were taken away.

At the very beginning of this video, you can see an entire house floating down the river. I can't even imagine.

I remember that. I live in the Chicagoland area and that was big news down here.

Yeah, that's a huge tourist area, too. It's in the Wisconsin Dells (waterpark capital of the world for those of you who don't know). The lake has since been refilled, but I remember going up there and seeing how dead the area was. Well, as dead as the Dells can be.

At least in daylight you can see them coming, but it seems to me that at night, how would you know til it was right there?
I have worried about that, lol. I sleep hard. I sleep like I mean it! Don't think I'd wake up until it was lifting me up.

Not too long ago, PhotoDave posted hurricane video and when it finished, another one popped up about guys in a gas station, watching the hurricane tear it apart. It was impressive to watch, but those guys are nuts! I wonder how many storm chasers end up dead.

Do you have basements to hide in?
A tornado passed about 4 blocks from me about 15 years ago. No basement, so we stayed in the downstairs powder room, which is the only room that doesn't have windows, and is in the "core" of the house. And has plumbing.

I have bottled water, a flashlight, and a battery hand held siren in there, along with an old-fashioned whistle, in case we are under debris (and conscious)

I did not see it, but the sky turned a strange shade of green/grey, so I knew that it wasn't a typical thunderstorm, so I grabbed the kids and hid. Plus, we were under a tornado watch - but that wasn't unusual.

I remember the sky looking strange like that a few years ago on my way home from school. Come to find out, they had damaging tornadoes up in Springfield,MA, that afternoon.

I've noticed it gets dreadfully quiet & still just before a funnel formation.

This was what we were keeping a close eye on last night.

Lot's of movement & rotation going on there, but nothing came out of the clouds further than what you see in the pic.

So glad to have never seen a tornado. I prefer the thunderstorms with horrible downpours this morning. And lightning. I would have gotten soaked had I not put on a raincoat and worn shorts so I could just dry off. Disney t-storm experience coming in handy.

My friend saw a twister in NC a few years ago. Interestingly, she has never gone back.

I don't like any kind of storms. Thunder scares my dog. She either runs and crawls under a bed, hides behind the toilet, or crawls on your lap and then tries to crawl up your shoulder like she's trying to get away from it. She shakes like a motorboat, too.

Just rain is fine, though.

Do you have to use one of those pressure jacket thingies or whatever you want to call it that reduces stress? My (very young) uncle and his wife have a dog with that problem and apparently it really helps.

My cat is like me. She's very interested in lightning. Actually, that cat and I are very alike...both think we're princesses, creatures of habit, do things on our own time when we want, not when someone tells us to...

We don't use a jacket. I've read reviews saying that they don't do anything really, but it probably depends on the dog. My dog is scared of everything pretty much. She used to be afraid of the kitchen because people would accidentally squeeze plastic bottles and they made a popping sound when popping back out. Every time she'd hear that she'd lower her tail and scurry down the hall.

I live in tornado alley, AL. Everybody really freaks out ever since we had all of those tornados in 2011. They closed schools early yesterday and cancelled classes at the college. It's better safe than sorry, though. Nothing major happened thank God. And today? It's beautiful outside. Perfect.

Footage from a tornado chase yesterday (4/17/13) in Texas. You can see the tornado starting around 3:30 into this video:

We've had an incredibly odd spring this year. It was in the lower 80's last week...then down to 35 less than a day later. o_O

Hey, that's the same as us! Only the 80s part is 50s. It's finally starting to hit 60s consistently here. Next week is supposed to be all 60s and sunny! But that's much too far for them to predict.
