Today Is The Last Day Of...

Glad I finally got to go to Big Thunder Ranch BBQ for the first time ever on my trip Dec 4 - 8 2015.
Was nice to see the animals and the area one last time. Hope the canoes come back as advertised.
The bean counters would love to get rid of that ride I'm sure.
Still think they could save the RoA as is and still put in Star Wars. Star Wars should have gone to DCA anyway.

With all the closures at Rivers of America and the Railroad, I'm surprised they are choosing to close some of those other attractions at the same time (Jungle Cruise, Aladdin, Autopia). Is it reasonable to assume that wait times around the park are going to increase this year due to these closures?

Maybe they're banking on fewer APs after the pricing restructuring last fall. DCA has capacity, so perhaps they're also figuring that park will have an uptick in attendance. It'll still be busy, but I wouldn't be surprised if Disney is planning for a downturn in attendance inside DL this year.

It is hard to tell at this point. Lots of people may decide to stay away because of the closures.

Based on?
Just count up the number of cast members it takes to operate this ride. Takes 2 cast members per canoe.
Quantity of canoes and cast members at the loading dock. The cost of upkeep on the canoes.
There have been times things have been cut to to RoI just search these boards. I love this ride.
But will the bean counters think the RoI is worth keeping this ride?

I would think this is one of the lower cost attractions to operate. Would think the counters of beans would actually want to keep it open.

We were seriously thinking about heading to CA this year, but since all of these closures I think it is better not to go. Well there is a lot more to CA than DL, but that was going to be a big part since we have never been.

They got rid of the canoes in both Paris and Orlando. The combination of low capacity and high labour costs (due to the # of CMs required to staff the attraction) shut them down.

Let's say for argument's sake both the Canoes and Mad Tea Party have the same hourly capacity, meaning they are both capable of entertaining and holding the same number of guests at a time. However, you also know the teacups need only 1 or 2 CMs to operate that ride, but the Canoes need 6. If labour is the largest single expense in operating an attracion, which one is giving you the best value for your money? And if closing one attraction saves you thousands of dollars a year on labour, without significantly affecting capacity, would you really want to keep it?

Oh I agree but figured maintenance would be very minimal which might offset labor costs.

I don't think the argument that the Canoes might close at DL solely because of high labor costs is the complete story. I can see why labor costs might be a factor in an attraction's closure, particularly for Euro Disney, which is mired in debt, but once a guest is past the gate there isn't a single attraction in any of the parks that generates revenue outside of the arcades, shooting gallery, and midway games. If they really wanted to keep the canoes open but high operating costs were a deciding factor the company could look for a sponsor to help subsidize expenses as they did with the Autopia.

I thought I read somewhere that the possible closure of the canoes had something to do with the ROA being shortened. Therefore making it very difficult to run all of the ROA attractions at the same time. However, if this is true I don't understand why they couldn't just do blocks of time alternating the Columbia and Canoes or alternate days.

Though things didn't work out and I didn't get back to the park this weekend, I am happy that the last time I made a complete trip around the River was July 17, 2015, Disneyland's 60th birthday. It was sunny and warm, not cold and dreary like today or yesterday, so I guess it makes for an honorable "last time."

Lol definitely honorable. I got lucky on Friday. Went around 3pm. It was a nice 60 degrees but sunny.

The Canoe CM's have been told they will be back April 2017, and hopefully that turns out to be the case.

They should be able to run the canoes and at least one of the ships, but I doubt with the truncated river they can run both the Twain and Colombia at the same time. The load unload takes too long. They will probably only run one at a time.

It was a very busy last day. All Disneyland parking lots were full for a while and according to social media some waited 3 hours to get a FP for one of the final Aladdin shows. They also had to close Big Thunder Ranch 20 minutes early because there were so many people waiting to see the final running of the goats.

I hope the canoes and the cast members return April 2017. What happens in the meantime?
If you have enough years of service you get put somewhere else like 5 years? If less than 5 years,
then unemployment?
Also, did not know they ran the goats. Would have done that in December if I had known.
