To ship or not to ship...

Hi All,

So every year DH and I have driven to WDW. But this year, we are flying. I have ("knock on wood") never lost luggage before. But friends who have been traveling lately have been telling me some horror stories. We are staying for 10 days so no matter no hard I try, I can not fit everything into a carry on. So we either check luggage or I have been thinking more about shipping stuff to the resort. Has anyone ever done this? Do you find it more reliable then the airlines? What if the items arrive before you check in? Any insight on this would be very helpful!

Thanks!

I work for FedEx and have previously worked for UPS and I can tell you that your stuff is just as safe using the airline for your luggage then one of us. I would see peoples luggage here and there and have even delivered it to peoples homes but honestly I don't see how its any safer in the end. But if your willing to support our business I'm all for it lol.

I am 1,000,000 sure. My DH and I have two outfits per day for 10 days. Thats 40 outfits. Including shoes and jewelry and toiletries, cameras, bags, etc. There is just no way.

When we do a longer trip, we plan some "down time" in the middle to rest by the pool, and take our clothes to the laundry near the pool. We take just over half the amount of clothes, do laundry half way thru, and then wear the clothes again. In other words, you'd take 2 outfits per day for 6 days, or 24 outfits instead of 40.

Thanks for all the tips!!!!! We are flying Air Tran. I have looked up the sizes of the carry on and the suitcase that can be taken on the plane. I am thinking I might attempt to get most of our items in the carry-on bag and the suitcase we can carry on and then ship some items too. So that is 2 carry ons and 2 suitcases. Step 1 - I will get some new suitcases to make sure they are the best size (I have two that are kind of old and smaller then the max allowed on Air Tran and I want to maximize that space). Step 2 - I might look into the space savor bags. Has anyone used them? I have seen and used the roll up kind for travel but has anyone flown using the vacuum kind? Step 3 - I will ship the items like toiletries, extras, shoes, what nots and do-dads that for some reason, I can not live with out.

However, there are two issues with this plan. The first, no vacuum cleaner to use the bags on the way back home, and the second, how do you ship from a WDW resort?

I think I am making this more complicated then it has to be and my paranoia of not having my perfectly coordinated outfits is clouding my judgement!!!

Regarding the vacuum bags, there are now compression bags that I think work just as well. It is a matter of rolling the air out of the bags. I know Walmart has them in the luggage department-but I am sure Target, etc. do also. Most people don't have canister vacuums these days.:)

I would like to know more about this. We are using ME for the first time and I understand that we will be getting yellow tags. So you just collect your luggage and put it on the bus?

knock on wood - we have never lost anything. I just don't need/want any stress. That is actually why I like driving. :) hee hee So I just want to make the best decision. I just don't know what to do.

If you get the yellow tags, and put them on your luggage, you do nothing with them. They will automatically be pulled prior to getting on the carousels, and will be delivered to your resort/room. The exception to this is if you arrive between like 10P and 6A. In that window, you would grab your own luggage and bring it to the bus with you for transport.

SpaceSaver/compression bags do work well. Some people feel that packing properly is a better alternative, as the bags work best with certain types of clothing. If you are packing sweaters, down jackets, stuff like that, they have alot of air that can get compressed out. If you ever watch the demos on tv, they only show you big puffy items that can compress easily. But if you are traveling with mostly cotton, or other tight weaves that doesn't have much excess space for air to hide in, you won't get nearly as much benefit from the compression packing. I like them as I can stick my running clothes in them at the end of the week, and not have to worry about that stinking up the rest of my stuff. However, once compressed the bags typically have a few inches of excess plastic on the edges (from where you compressed the air out) that ends up taking space as well.

Shipping from a WDW resort is actually really easy. You just bring the boxed items to the concierge/business center. They will provide you with a UPS/FedEx form to fill out. They will then charge your room/credit card the cost of the shipping plus a handling fee, tape up your box and get it sent on its way.

Most travel/outdoor stores sell them as well.

A few thoughts. If your luggage gets delayed, DME will still automatically get it to your room for you. If you are in the park, you may never even know it was delayed. And if it gets lost/damaged/delayed, airlines typically cover your out of pocket expenses for so many days to buy clothes and essentials. (Not sure if DME will automatically file the claim, or if you will need to) If you ship something to the resort, you need to allow enough time to ensure it gets there in advance. There will be the chance that the box gets misplaced after delivery (especially if you go to a convention resort where you need to pay a fee for them to receive your box). In either situation, or if the box/contents get damaged, you will need to pay for any out of pocket your own, and then file a claim with the shipper and wait for them to decide if it is covered or not.

Remember that you can do laundry on property. Even my DW (who has changed as many as 4 times a day on a trip) has never brought more than her carryon with us for a 10 day trip. Picking a few tops that coordinate with a few bottoms, and then washing midtrip can cut your needs in half.

Yes, I have used those - the travel space savers. They are "ok" at best. Its hard to get the air out of them. The vacuum bags are better bc. I don't know what you mean about a canister vacuum. We have bagless but it still has a nozel for getting into small spaces and corners which is what is used to get the air out of the bags.

See the thing is...I just don't "want" to do laundry on vacation. I do laundry all the time - not on vacation!! :) I'm a nanny so either at home or work, i'm constantly picking up, cleaning up, laundering, drying, etc...all the time!! So ...I just don't "want" to. :) Thanks for the info on ME and shipping from WDW. Its helpful info to know!!! :) I am a master packer - which is why I am not satisfied with the compression space saver bags. They just don't do enough to save space. I agree that the vacuum bags are better for big items - winter coats, pillows, etc. The issue is not how I pack but rather just the quantity of what I pack. Its easier in the summer bc the pieces are smaller and more light weight. But after I have all my shoes, accessories, etc, its just a lot of stuff. I spend most of my days in yoga pants and tshirts with kiddos all around! :) So for me, coordinating outfits and accessorizing is part of the fun of going on vacation! :)

Hi disneygirl76. If this is your first time using Disney Magical Express, I would recommend that you take full advantage of that service and don't worry about your bags. Just your travel documents and a carry-on only for anything you might need after your arrival (swimsuit, toiletries, etc.) until your bags arrive (2-3 hrs.) You'll be amazed at how simple this trip is going to be for you; no loading of car, rest stops, anxiety re "aggressive drivers", etc. BTW, your signature has CBR --have you changed resorts?

A lot of vacuums don't have the removable nozzle these days. I have the upright Orecks and they don't have that capability.

I have lost luggage.. a couple as a matter of fact :(
But, the luggage has always been found and delivered to me by days end.. or the next day. So, in your carry on bag.. just put everything you will need for a day... change of clothes or two.. bathroom stuff.. etc. That should cover you and if your checked luggage is lost (knock on wood), it will arrive within a day.. no worries..

I flew at least 40 times in the past year for work and have not lost my bag. However, about nine years ago on at trip to Disney World, our luggage was lost. It arrived the next day and everything was fine.

On another note, I will never use Magical Express for my luggage again. About two years ago we used it for bag delivery (before there was a nightly cutoff time) and we waited all night for our bags. At about 7 we finally called the baggage handlers office, and they couldn't locate our bags. Our bags had pretty much been left in the open. They were finally delivered to our room and both bags had been gone through. I mean to the point that they ahad emptied my makeup bag into my luggage. Needless to say that we were missing items including my husband's camera (and yes, he should not have checked it).

The main problem is who is responsible for the luggage at that point? The manager came to our room and kind of appoligized but said it was not the resort's problem. The Magical Express baggage service is not run by Disney and said it is not their fault but blamed it on TSA at our home airport.

So, I would never trust my bags in another service. They change "hands" too many times and are all too eager to blame each other. (In all honesty, I really think it was a resort issue).
