My personal general list of 'tips' i offer folks traveling out to Disneyland -
Tip #1 -
Do NOT room at a Disney owned hotel.
Too expensive, no real 'benefits' offered for 'staying On-Property', and way too expensive.
Did i mention they are expensive?
To each their own, of course, but the expense just seems unnecessary.
LOTS of better and more affordable options all around the area...a few even closer to the Parks then the actual Disney owned ones.
To avoid the 'touristly' madness and crowds of staying on Harbor Blvd, i highly recommend hotels on W. Katella Ave.
A 10 minute walk to the front gates from just about any hotel located here, and none of the crazy congestion of Harbor.
Tip #2 -
If flying from another state, do NOT fly into LAX if you can help it...no matter how cheap the airfare might be.
You get what you pay for, as they say.
Try SNA ( John Wayne / Orange County ) or LGB ( Long Beach ).
Both are far closer to Disneyland Resort, are sometimes the same airfare, and do not suffer as badly from the extreme traffic issues coming from LAX.
While SNA and LGB are about a 25 to 30 minute ride to DLR, LAX can take up to an hour depending on the traffic situation.
Also, both SNA and LGB are far more relaxing and pleasurable to spend time in.
In the words of a fellow traveler and Disneyland expert - 'LAX has all the charm of a third world concrete prison"....or along those lines.
( love ya, TP ! )
Tip #3 -
Counter Service dining at DLR is in many cases just as nice as Table Service options.
Some Table Service options are vastly overpriced but to each their own, but don't dismiss the wonderful assortment of goodies and settings offered by Counter Service locations.
Tip #4 -
DO enjoy all the live entertainment options offered at both Parks.
DLR has a stellar lineup, and i think a lot of visitors pass them over for other experiences ( Parades and Fireworks the exception )
Definitely take in a show or enjoy strolling entertainers.
A big part of Disneyland's unique charm is the entertainment offerings.
Tip #5-
DO use the 'Legacy (paper) Fastpass' system still in place at DLR.
Use it for most of the E-Ticket experiences to avoid waiting in long lines.
This is a service offered to all Park Guests free of charge.
It still amazes me that so many visitors do not use this system, or seem to even know about it!
Works great for Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, Radiator Springs Racers, Tower Of Terror, and other major Attractions you wish to see.
Tip #6 -
Avoid 'Commando Touring'...i.e. running around like mad on a 'set schedule' to try to do and see as much as possible in one day.
This is not Walt Disney World, people.
Disneyland is a different experience that ( in my opinion ) is far more relaxing because it is absolutely not necessary to do this.
Choose your 'must sees' ahead of time, but don't kill yourself trying to cram too much into one day.
Slow down and ENJOY the ambiance...because Disneyland Park in particular has PLENTY of such 'ambiance'.
Sit on a bench and have a ice cream while people watching.
Take a ride on the horse drawn Main Street trolley.
Grab a table at Cafe Orleans and watch the world go by as you snack on Pomme Frittes or a salad.
I'm sure there is more i could say, but i think those six cover the basics and most important points.
Most important of all -
HAVE FUN !
