Tipping

Well, we just came back last week and I can tell you that if you are on the dining plan the waitress figures it out for you. When she brings the bill to you and you give her the dining plan card the waitress then disappears to adjust the bill. When she returns she gives you a receipt for the dining plan that let's you know how many credits you used but, then she gives you another receipt and says this is the balance for the gratuity. The gratuity is figured out and circled on the receipt and that is what you are "expected" to pay. It happened at ALL the table service restaurants we ate at which were:

The Garden Grill (family style)
O'Hanas (family style)
Cape May Cafe (buffet)
Whispering Canyon Cafe (family style)
Chef Mickey's (buffet)
Crystal Palace (buffet)

Believe me , they make sure you know that the tip is not included and when they hand you the receipt with the "tip balance", they say this is your balance I'll be back in a moment!

How much did they put down as the tip balance on the buffet meals?

I also wonder how much Disney gave back to the buffet employees last year when the tip was included. Was it the same as the full service restaurants? Any Disney employees out there that can answer that? I just want to give a fair tip when I am there.

At a buffet i have to get out of my seat to retrieve food.
Thus..NO tip, Period.
You bring me my meal..I'll tip you.
Just a drink doesnt count. I could care less what you make per hour or any of that stuff. If a waier/waitress isnt making enough money..Get another job.
So, Buffets.....No tipping from me.
Regular restaurants....10% take it or leave it.

When they calculated their tip, what percent did they use? 15%, 18%, 20%, etc.? I'm going to be on the Deluxe Dining Plan for 10 days and I'd like to know what is going to happen. So they bring you a bill and then go off and recalculate it and tell you how many credits you used. What happens then? Can you charge what YOU want to the room or on a credit card or leave it in cash? Now that is going to turn me off and I usually leave 18% to 20% but I might think twice about it.

My DH has always been a great tipper, but this taking the tip out of the DDP really made him upset. He even went so far to say that he was going to show the union and not tip at all and see how they like that. Of course I am not going to let him get away with that and it was a joke but he was really upset. I can't wait to tell him that the wait staff actually tell you how much to tip. This is going to be funny.

I just got back from a week down there. We had the Dining Experience Card that gives a 20% discount. When it was used there was an automatic 18% added back to the bill for gratuity. There was only 4 adults at each meal.

The DDE is different than the meal plans, and there is an automatic gratuity on all TS meals. http://www.allearsnet.com/din/dde.htm Meal plans don't have the auto gratuity (or aren't supposed to - get a manager) for parties less than 6.

We were 4 adults and 1 child on the Dining Plan.

Okay, yeah, you were not obligated to pay the 18% then. It's super tacky that the wait staff did that to you. I'm sure that the computer spits out the 18% figure, but to make such a big deal about it... It's one thing to say something like, "The meal plan covers XXX (depending on plan) only, so please keep that in mind when ordering," but you better not demand a certain payment from me!!!

I hope to not run into this on my trip in May. But knowing this going in, I'm definitely getting a mgr if this happens. Wait staff demanding a tip from me is a good way not to get one! BTW, we're good tippers. DH even more than I am.

So are you obligated to tip as much as they tell you to if there are only two adults?
My DH is a good tipper but is totally against this whole thing of them telling you how much to tip.

Wow. Thats a pretty shady way to run a resturant. Handing a bill for the "tip". Not cool. I could understand if they had what 15%, 18% and 20% is printed out on the bottom of the recept - that makes it easier for me to figure out an appropriate tip and still gives an option. I could even understand if they put a little reminder on the bottom of DDP reciepts "gratuity not included with DDP meals". But flat out giving you a bill for the tip is just asking to be stiffed.

Mousebymirrage - Did you order anything with these meals that was not included with the dining plan that you were being billed for as well?

Maybe so, but if they didn't they would be stiffed anyway by a lot of guests.

If stiffing a waiter because he brought you a piece of paper explaining that tips were NOT included in your meal plan is your sole reason for not tipping, then perhaps you should walk a mile in his shoes.

It's not about getting a paper explaining that tips aren't included. Mousebymarriage originally said:

Sounds like more than just getting a paper with a suggested tip to me!

They could explain that tips are not included in the meal plan in a more tactful way than giving you a bill for the tip and telling you that that is the remaining balance for your meal. For example (what I said in my previous post) listing what different percentages of the cost is on the bottom of the bill along with a note about it not being included in the plan. Sure, some people are going to miss it or ignore it but as long as the tip is not included in the plan that is going to happen. Same thing would happen if they had no dining plan - some cash paying customers wouldn't tip either because they don't believe in it or because they forget. At least that way they wouldn't be ticking off their customers.

I am having doubts as to whether the DDP is worth it. You almost have to go to a full service restauarant for dinner and order one of the more expensive items to do good on this plan. The buffet is close to a break even. If you order a sandwich or burger for your full service meal. you are losing out. Now I have to deal with a server telling me how much to tip them?

On another thread (under news & rumors) some posters suggest that it was the wait staff union who forced the DDP to drop the tip--apparently, the wait staff didn't like not getting their tip money until their paycheck, instead of getting it immediately with cash customers. And also didn't like having to report the full actual tips to the tax man (since it was documented on their paychecks). It was further suggested that they may be sorry they got what they wished for, because now instead of getting an automatic tip, albeit later, via the DDP accounting they now do not get any tips at all from many patrons so now they're out a lot of money. Could be that's why they've decided they have to "bill" for the tips...

Perhaps this is their way of weaning the penny-pinching tightwads OFF of the Dining Plan.

Life at the World was MUCH better before this plan came to be the status quo.

Disney's food was better and more varied. Now they just have to cater to the lowest common denominator.
