Tipping Housekeeping

For those who leaves tips for the housekeepers through their stay...

Where do you usually leave it and how do you show that it is for them. We tried twice last August and both times the housekeeper didn't take the tip. We really felt bad about it.

Try to get the name of your maid, and leave the tip in an envelope with her name on it. It also helps if you check on which is her day off so you know when to leave the tip. ;)

I always leave it on top of the tv or on the night stand.

When my wife and I go to Disney World, we usually stay for a week.

We print up 7 envelopes..each one with a differant Disney Design or Character on it.

Each day we leave one out and write or print the words:

For MOUSEKEEPING

We put a tip in one each day, and leave them on a dresser.

We enjoy printing these up before we leave on our vacation. It helps get us in a Disney mood, and hopefully, it puts a smile on the Housekeepers faces when they find them. :)

I use the Microsoft word files. Just click on the file and it will download to your computer. Print it to a regular sheet of paper so that you will see how to load the envelope into your printer.

Not all of the Micorosoft Word files are currently working. I believe the first five or so, say file not found but the rest should be pretty easy to download

I always leave a tip for housekeeping on my pillow, and it is never there when I return to my room. I assume that I was told to do this 30 odd years ago. :)

Appropriate Tipping?

I want to make sure I leave the appropriate amount for a tip. I might be able to find it in our travel guide, but I want to make sure that I leave the correct amount. It's been so long since we went on vacation I'm not sure what is appropriate now.

THey have tipping down to a science on Cruise Ships, as they usually post "tipping Guidelines" and even supply you the envelopes for the tips, but when it comes to the Housekeeping staff at hotels, well I don't really know what the "Standard" is...

My friends and I usually pool together $1.00 each, per day of our stay, and leave on the last day, on the dresser....At some hotels, I have seen envelopes there for just that purpose.

I always leave my housekeeping tip in the bathroom under the little card with the housekeepers name on. I leave $1 per person per day and a little extra on the last day it the service has been particulary good.

It depends upon the number of people in your party! Beauty has 5 in her family, so $5 each might be excessive! However, I always leave at least $5, even when I'm alone. I usually leave $10 per day when the whole family is along. As Beauty stated, if the service has been exceptional, she'll leave more. :) I think it's an individual choice...I personally am uncomfortable with the whole tipping concept, and wish there were a better way to ensure reasonable wages for all employees. However, since it's the norm, and I know many people are dependent upon it, I go along with it.

I've always done the $1 a day per person...but that comes to $5 or $6 per day for us. I've always left it under the card with the person's name on it. I did read, however, on a post that this particular person left the tip on her pillow every day. That also seemed like a good idea.
I'd like to know what other people tip housekeeping.
How about the CM's that bring the luggage to your room...$1 a bag?
I'd love some input on this.

Maria--could you let us know about how much to tip per day for housekeeping? :)

I usually leave a couple dollars per day, but I also usually stay by myself and I don't make much of a mess....

The Mom's right, I leave a dollar per person which for us is $5 per day for 21 days plus @$20 on the last day which is $125 per trip.
I also give $1 per item to the luggage handlers which is usually about $10. I also leave at least 15% tip on any restaurant bill.
We actually find we tip, and are expected to tip, in America far more than we would ever do at home. But as they say when in Rome.......

I don´t remember very well what the standard was when I worked at the hotel, but the bellboy tip of $1 per suitcase sounds ok to me. Unless you only have one suitcase and he shows you the amenities in the room and is nice explaining about the phone and stuff... then I would tip more... and sorry to say this, but the amount is many times depending on my mood and how nice I perceived he was.

As for the maid, I think $1 per person per day is the standard everywhere. As you said, if you are alone, you don´t make a whole mess, so it would be ok, or maybe leave a little more. At the cruise I know they have everything planned so you don´t leave without leaving it... but at a hotel... is more like what you feel she deserves. I personally think they deserve a lot!

There was a housekeeping´s strike when I worked at the hotel, and medium management and upper management had to do rooms too...and believe me, it took us three people to make a king size bed! They were so heavy and with so many blankets that have to be perfectly made, it was hard! We got wrinkles everywhere! Took us almost one hour to make the whole room clean and ready for a new guest, when it should take them (the maids) 20 mins. average. After having to do that, I really appreciatte them!
