Tipping Housekeeping

For those who leaves tips for the housekeepers through their stay...

Where do you usually leave it and how do you show that it is for them. We tried twice last August and both times the housekeeper didn't take the tip. We really felt bad about it.

When we stay in a hotel room, I tip $5.00 a day, but when we stay in one of the villas I always leave $10.00 because it is a larger unit and there is usually a team of at least two that clean the villas and larger units. It is well worth it to come back to a nice room and if you ask for any little extras, they are always willing to go above and beyond.

I tip $1.00 per bag and if I call housekeeping for extra pillows, blankets, etc., I usually tip them a couple of dollars as well.

We always leave a tip. We lie the card with the maids name on it on it's side and put the money in the folded card. It is always gone and we always get great service. Except for last time. We had a maid that must have been new because she didn't do much except make the beds.

What if you do get terrible service? Then do you still leave the full amount? Do you leave this tip each day (in case you have different maids on different days?). I usually left the tip at the end of the visit, but I'm thinking that might not be the best. When do you all leave it?

We always tip daily. In the past it has worked out well. The way I look at it, the maid that cleans the room that day gets the prize.

The grandfather of one of my ex-bfs used to say that tips should be given before getting the service, specially in a restaurant!
Thinking about it, he was so right!;)

You're suggestion might have worked, but unfortunately my daddy is no longer with us. If you still have your daddy then be grateful, not everyone does.

but ..I leave more if the maid has taken the time for extra touches, like arranging the girls disney toys and laying thier nities out on the bed. One year we had the very best .. the girls were always excited when we started back to the room because "Andy" did all sorts of interesting things with their stuff, so all the way back to the CBR they would be trying to guess what he had done that day! It was sad the next year we didnt have very good service at all, in fact when we checked in to the room there was sand in the bed, and the girls were dissappointed when they didnt come home to find anything special.

The one dollar per BAG tip has been the standard for many years.

I personally think it's a little low now because the cost of living keeps going up.:(

Here's what I do now....I tip ONE dollar more than the number of bags I have.

If I have one bag....I tip two dollars
If I have two bags...I tip 3 dollars
If I have three bags....I tip 4 dollars.

It's really up to the individual..tip what you FEEL like and what you can afford. I like to put myself in the shoes of the tipeee (is THAT a word?)

How much do you think he or she makes per hour and how important are the tips to his or her survival.

I tend to tip highly paid people LESS because they are getting paid more...I know that that's not proper etiquette...but that's just the way I feel:)

well those tips are for bell boys .. which is a bit different ..since you only tip them when they are delivery or picking up your luggage.. but your right ..the tip for bell service is based on how many items. Its nice to over tip when its deserved ..even if they do make a nice salary already .. tipping for good service is what keeps you getting good service :)

I'm a DVC member so I don't really worry about that anymore. We usually only stay for 6 nights so we don't get a full cleaning until the last day.
I used to tip when we stayed in the resorts but only if my room was cleaned well.
Here's a tidbit; if you call Disney and ask them how much you should tip housekeeping, you'll be told that housekeeping is not a tipped position and that no tip is required.

hmm you dont make DVC sound very good .. you dont get a full cleaning if your a DVC member? heck I wont lie .. any one that cleans our room deserves a tip

You get a "trash and tidy" on the third or fourth day and a full cleaning on the sixth or seventh day.
I'll trade daily housekeeping for a guaranteed great price on a very large room in a deluxe resort any day! If it weren't for DVC, I'd be staying at the All Stars instead of the Boardwalk.
I'll tip a good housekeeper; I won't tip a bad one. Disney (and the IRS), however say that housekeepers are not tipped employees.

For some reason the DVC members voted down the maid service at the resorts. And the entire thing was going to cost them very little.

maids and tipping

well I wont tip for bad service but never had that experience but once .. I dont think I would pay less if I have to pick up after the kids and hubby either, its worth it to have someone else come in and then we come back to a clean room, with surprises for the kids .. I think of the extra touches that housekeeping does for the kids as one of the "magic" things we enjoy. and like I said the maids that clean our room sure deserve their tips even if we are not spose to tip them. I am on vacation too .. so I dont really want to spend my evenings cleaning up. But like everything else its a personal choice .. I do know for sure now I am not interested in the DVC, so thanks for the info ..we had always debated would it be worth it and now we know for sure its not for us.

How much is very little?
If individual members want to pay extra for daily maid service, that option is available. The membership as a whole, however felt that keeping yearly dues down was more important than daily maid service.
When we go, it's just my wife and I in a studio. We're not very messy. To each his own, but if you go to WDW at least every two years, you should really run the numbers and see if daily maid service is worth all the extra money you're paying for a room.

I guess if the money was a problem then we wouldnt go at all .. and if we could only go every two years ... I dont want to think about it!!! its bad enough we had to miss last year due to an illness in my family.. it was a struggle getting through this year. See Thespis, its only you and your wife .. and you must not be anything like my DH .. who tends to be even messier then the kids. So that does work for you ..the one thing about these post ..you can take what will work for you and use it. Once again we have talked over the DVC and dont feel it would be something we want.
