Time Limits on Cast Members?

Allthou this was back in the 70s, When my Family and I went to WDW for Christmas, my dad would start up a conversation with a CM, Usually the resort CMs such as the Housekeeping or the Waiters/Waitresses at the Contempoary or the Monorail Pilot since we had very good luck ridding in the cab nearly time we boarded. The experence we had with them was always frendly and they were from what I can remember they were almost busting with joy in ther position with WDW. I remember in the summer of 71, we went to the preview showing at WDW and we stayed at the Hiliton that was near the the property at that time. We met a waitress at the Hilton one morning and again like my Dad always did struck up a conversation with this one picticular Waitress at the Coffee Shop. as the conversation went on we said that were going to see the WDW preview and she told us that she and a few others were hired by WDW for the resort and was excited to be starting there new jobs within a few weeks for training. I also remember in thoes days the CMs were older on average that they seem to be now. Also I am assuming Disney wanted experenced CMs since the resort was new and this was Disneys "Big Show" to make shure that the resort was a success from day one. I am assumming now that there experence figured into what there starting pay was and I guess in thoes days with the COL you could afford to live on the pay at that time, and most of the CMs we met had families. On my last trip in 93 I struk up a conversation with some CMs and they were happy and polite but somehow, maybe because I was the same age then that my dad was in the 70, it just seemed a different experience than I remembered as a kid.

Sounds like you are enabling her. Many people use their personal problems in order to get attention from others. When you reward her by giving it, she will only seek you out more often in the future. If she's crying at work, I would suggest that she get some counseling or therapy.

It isn't just me. She plays to all 45 CM's there.

All I am saying is that CM's are people too. We are not brainwashed to be like Walt or are a Disney audio-animatronic. CM's are regular people, with regular feelings, just like anyone else who has a job. It's just that guests expect SO much of CM's that we look bad if we say or do something "human". Quite a high qualification for a low-paying job.

People are people, and sometimes people get upset.

Yes theres nothing worse than helping out a workmate. Far better to leave it to an overpayed busybody. Still I take it thats the American way. With that sort of compassion for a co worker you make excellent leadership material.

Like I said, the only people that have to put up with a bad job are folks with small mouths to feed.

Not in this economy, sadly :(

I cannot even begin to tell you the number of patients we have who have lost their jobs, their retirements, everything. It's really sad. Especially those companies who put everything into stock options- our Lucent patients are  They have no jobs, and no money. I don't know what the situation is down in FL. I assume it's as bad as here (Chicago). I don' t know how the CMs are affected.

As a whole I dislike people who are bitter. There's no point in it. But frustrated, angry- we're all entitled to those emotions.

As a side note, the comment I was referring to was "Normal people who are unhappy with their jobs or feel they are being mistreated (pay, benefits, etc.) find other jobs." Personally, in my experience, I have found that most people keep right on complaining.

Also, John and I have no mouths to feed but if either of us lost our job, we would lose our house. I would rather put up with a bad job than lose my house!

Exactly! Why have her go around to all the amateur psychologists at work when she should be going to someone who has been trained to help her. :)

I never once said that people should LOSE their jobs. That is a horrible thing to happen to anybody. I'm just saying people should put their energy into looking for another job instead of lamenting their fate. They should look for other employment while they work the current job and quit only when the other job is in the bag. Never jeopardize your source of income.

I realize that GOOD jobs are very hard to find in the current economic climate. There's a lot of people who say "I can't find a job!" when what they really mean is "I can't find a good job that I like." There's a huge difference. Some CMs will tell you that WDW is a bad, low-paying job. If that's the case then I bet there are plenty of other bad, low-paying jobs available that they might like more.

My ultimate point is that many people who work at WDW and complain so bitterly about it either actually enjoy their jobs to some degree or enjoy the benefits to the degree that they will not find other employment. And if those things are what's keeping you there, then you really shouldn't be complaining.

LA,

 I know you didn't say people should lose their jobs. I hope I didn't insinuate that!

And this statement:

I realize that GOOD jobs are very hard to find in the current economic climate. Well, that is pretty much my point. What's the difference which job they are complaining about? Maybe they came from different low paying jobs that they liked even less than Disney.

I guess I just think it's normal for people to complain about their jobs, and CMs are normal people. That's all. We can agree to disagree.

Did you have a particularly bad experience? I am always up for a good story :animwink:

It just occured to me that we, the die-hard Disney fans, are sounding a bit bitter and argumentative ourselves

Oh, the irony. I'm just as guilty as the next person!:p

CMs complaining is fine. It just seems that some of them on here have an axe to grind, if you know what I mean. I'm the type of person who is always greatful for my employment. I don't feel anyone is guaranteed a job and we should appreciate them, I guess. I complain about my job, too! But usually, I would be very polite about it. I'd say something like "I'm glad I have a job, and I appreciate the opportunity to work for company x, but they are so stupid sometimes when it comes to Y." That kind of thing. When I was growing up, my parents did not tolerate food griping, because we are fortunate to have plenty of food and should be thankful for it, even if it was slightly burned on occasion or whatever. If I got a pair of ugly socks for Christmas, I always said "Thank you!" even if I would never wear them. It's just me, I guess. I'm appreciative.

So buy your logic a person is upset at work, send them to a shrink. Turns out that there car is broken and they dont have the money to fix it. So unless the shrink happens to be a chap motor mechanic what exactly was the benefit of the visit.

Perhaps when you have a few more years of life experiences you will realise that not every problem requires someone with a diploma to fix it.
experience also teaches you when not to go fishing in the welfare pond. But if you were to have all your saff sent for "proper help" the minute your aproached with a problem youd have a prety empty department.

And buy the way in some jobs you are expected to care for and guide your people. So try to avoid blanket statements.

Other than that why not let CMs blow off steam, better here on a board than in your face when your in a park.

which department? In WDW Entertainment, all we want is respect, nothing more.. however, to our superiors, we are nothing more than "meat machines" (and that is a direct quote from a manager).

Now the funny thing is when you told those people they should transfer or even look for a job outside of Disney they could give you 100 reasons why they couldnt.

I have no intention of leaving Disney.. i'm just part time, I go in, do my job, and go home.. that's it. Disney is my fun job, Universal is my bread and butter

well, not 107 hours worked, but 107 continuous hours paid. It was during rehearsals last fall... I was learning like 3 roles at a time, and then doing my regular duties. The cool thing was that they had catering during one of the overnight sessions

:) Hi Pam:D Rose and Crown.

:) Hi Rosie:D Garden Grill

And Hi to all the wonderful Cast Members I have met in my many trips to Walt Disney World.

To most of us our current job is either the best one we have ever had or the worst one. Our current boss is either the best or the worst. Years and a job or two latter we usually find out we were wrong.:animwink:

I vent about work. But I vent to my family. I don't complain to outsiders about my work place or supervisor. I feel that if I am accepting the pay check I should keep negitive thoughts away from "the public". But that's me. I am not going to try to force my opinion on others.

I also believe that some of the best "counseling" is done by fellow workers, those that know what one is going through on the job.

Low pay. That is the norm in today's economy for millions of us. Just try to keep in mind that a business pays what a job is worth not what the person is worth. The best brain surgeon in the world would be paid $6-10 an hour at McDonalds. Is that the measure of that persons worth? Of course not, but that is what that job is worth to McDonalds.

Oops, I talk to much.:o :animwink:
