Tiana's Bayou Adventure: Disneyland Watch & Discussion

Splash had a story that really succeeded at meshing the drops and the narrative into something that really worked. You started out with hints and warnings that you might be heading for trouble, and it steadily built throughout the ride until you reached the villain’s lair and “escaped” via a big drop over a cliff. The celebration at the end felt earned.

Tiana’s ride, despite being based on a very fun and thrilling film, is, for me, very flat, one-note (Happy happy happy!) and perplexingly timid about… just about everything. They treat the big drop almost like it’s not there, and this is not the first time Disney has recently taken a great animated film and removed every bit of peril and excitement from the source material.

I love the look and sound of the finale, but what are we celebrating? We’re special? We’re special because we completed the preschool-level task of recognizing what animals look like?

They could make Tiana say at the start, “Hey, everyone! Can you spot things that starts with the letter ‘E’?” and I honestly think it wouldn’t make any difference.

Just my take. I’m glad people are having fun—it’s still an excellent water flume—but they could have done so, so, soooooo much more with the PatF characters than this.
Sanitizing main stream Princess films down to preschool level cartoons. This all reeks of 2003 Michael Eisner. Besides Iger are any of his other old work buddies still employed at Disney?

Why is the preschool ride the one with the 50 foot drop? Who made this choice.

IMO the only moments that are 100% Disney/ WDI caliber on the ride is Mama Odie shrinking us / dip drop and the finale. Everything else has moderate to major issues.

… comparing it back to the first log flume I rode (Log Ride at Knott's) basically puts it right back on the same level as Splash Mountain to me….
Timber Mtn. was my first log flume too, and—honestly—It’s still my favorite. I’ll take its perfect theme (a log flume about loggers), wonderful pacing and fantastic, lengthy, dark where-the-heck-are-we-going section over any other flume any day. Love the theme song they added!

It’s a really fun ride but of course doesn’t have anywhere near the polish that Splash Mountain did but it’s the best ride at Knotts by far. I didn’t enjoy Halloween Hootenany as much. I guess the soundtrack on the original really does make an impact.

Compare this to TBA which plays out like a rejected episode of Dora. "Can you find the critters? Point to where the critters are". It's complete tonal whiplash to the track layout that was designed to be thrilling and energetic. The lift hill was designed to make you feel tense about the upcoming drop.
Dora at least had Swiper the Fox to offer mild stakes. There are none in TBA.

They really need to overhaul the lift hill section of the ride to create some as that's where it really falls apart. I also think us shrinking could have been better if it was an accident, rather than something Mama Odie did to us on purpose.

The staging is also pretty poor. It’s not very clear that we have shrunk down. And they probably know that as they try to hammer it home with Odie and Tiana telling us we’ve shrunk down multiple times.

For a local I guess that's a valid question. I'll be in a hotel, probably getting ready for the day at that time anyway.

My bigger concern is if I really want to get soaked in the third week of November. Historically it doesn't get above the high 60's during that time. I'm not going to be staying walking distance on this trip, so I need a game plan for dry clothes. E take a backpack with dry clothes and keep them in a locker or just keep them in my car. Also need to either bring a second pair of shoes or figure out a way to cover them up.

You can get a day in the mid 70s In November. But then you have to get lucky twice. The good weather and a call back time around 2pm.

There's more storytelling in this one sentence than there is on the whole attraction. There's literally no motivation for Mama Odie to shrink you except that maybe she was bored? It's like she's there just to be there. Did Tiana pull a sidebar with her and ask her to help shrink us to look for smaller bands? We don't know.

Then she's like....oops....I guess if you're small you can't join this great party that you needed to climb a hill to get to for some reason.

She shrinks us to find the final band, and the hill is her regrowing us and sending us to the party.

I know there was concern on how they would deal with the open spaces in the HDYD section where you could see into other scenes. Looks like they did a good job of covering those up with foliage and screens.

I agree with you. I have no problem with the first couple screen/projection walls in the HDYD section. Especially the one just prior to the second Louis AA, which fills in the formerly-open space. Looks good to me.
