Yep. I also remember that Stella Meghie was supposed to be in charge and she was replaced. The show was supposed to coincide with the new ride and it didn't happen so now the ship has sailed...

I don't think the shelving of this project has anything to do with DEI. Why would anyone think that? Because all shows about black people exist because of DEI? I don't think that's true at all.

You may not agree with my suggestion (and I myself already noted my ambivalence, as I don’t like conspiracy theories), but I’m surprised that you find the DEI connection so farfetched given all the chatter (much of it very critical) surrounding Disney’s promotion of Tiana in the post-2020 moment. Here is something (positive) published in that moment that I feel is representative of what I’m getting at:

The Princess and The Frog is an excellent choice for a spin-off series. Although the movie musical was enjoyable, it didn't receive the credit it deserved at the time. Compared to other Disney animated classics, it is considered a box office flop. It may not have been Disney's best film, but what it represented was a more important factor that got diminished. Tiana was Disney's first-ever black Princess, and The Princess and The Frog was the first Disney film to explore Haitian culture. It is lovely that Disney brought Tiana back to explore these themes and promote diversity.

I get your perspective, but I think this linkage was unfair to the character. It turned some of the anti-DEI people into anti-Tiana people, and I just think that was very foolish of Disney. I'm not a DEI-fan, but I always enjoyed PatF. I have enough of a head on my shoulders to see through the drivel that Disney put out there at the time and not let it affect my opinions of Tiana. But there are lots of people who started disliking Tiana because Disney started promoting her in the post-2020 moment.

It's that whole messaging over storytelling piece that bothers me. Clearly, they didn't have a solid storyline in place when they announced this show. It was, like the Splash replacement, a knee-jerk announcement. It's the perfect example of them prioritizing the WRONG things. I think Iger finally sees the folly of this. Get a good story and tell it.

I like The Princess and the Frog and Tiana and would have loved watching this show even though I think Sequels/ TV shows are unnecessary, but I don't think it has anything to do with "anti-DEI". In the article it specifically says that both Disney Animation and Pixar will no longer invest in Disney+ content, more specifically, long term TV shows, and I've said elsewhere that producing these is unsustainable because of the high quality animation that cost a lot of money with little to no profit by dumping it on streaming. Let's face it, something like Win or Lose won't bring in new subscribers. I think this is strictly a financial decision.

What they need to do is let DTVA develop something for Tiana with low quality animation like Tangled the series.

I remember reading reports from attendees who actually attended last year's D23 that Disney actually create a few early promotional material for the Tiana series.
