Thoughts on Avatar after experiencing Cars Land

Another item I thought might be interesting would be something similar to the ghost photos they offer in Memento Mori. The could take a photo of you and change it to show you what your own avatar face would look like. I could see that selling, as well as a sample of the stuff that they have to traveled to Pandora for in the first place - unobtanium.

I don't believe that the merchandise for this particular part of the park will be a large component. I remember going in the gift shop that is near the EE ride in DAK. It is a much smaller and more intimate space, not like the emporium on MSUSA. I believe that this is something that they could develop. They could have different figurines of the various species of animals that live on Pandora. They could definitely sell books about the movie, making of the movie, the various plants and animals of Pandora, the inhabitants of Pandora, etc.

Maybe there could be an area of this expansion 'inhabited' by the humans that stayed on Pandora. It could function as a 'museum' of sorts but would obviously be the place where you buy merchandise specific to this world and this franchise.

All of these sound great and would sell big time. Another thing I could see them selling Avatar Glow sticks for the wrist, around the neck and to hold in your hands. Probably wouldn't cost that much to make and the markup would have Disney make a killing off of it. It would be cool to see at nighttime too.

Speaking of which, @MarkTwain and @twebber55 , any other small details or tasty tidbits you can share without getting in trouble? Throw us a Banshee bone, willya? :)

Well, since we're all talking merchandise, how about a merchandise tidbit… There's likely to be some features of the nighttime aspects of the land which can only be experienced with the right kind of merchandise. ;) I think Disney wants in on some of that Harry Potter wand idea.

Hmm. A necklace or wand with an RFID chip in it. If you get close to things with it, they will glow/activate, etc.
Could be cool. Though, if the park is packed, you could practically stand anywhere and watch others do the magical thing.

Were we talking about merchandise, @MarkTwain ? And here I thought we were talking about a boat ride . . . ;)

It's the same thing with the wands at Universal, you can just watch other people use them, but they are still very popular. I wouldn't be surprised if Avatarland contained something like this.

Here is a thought. If Disney wants to continue developing uses for magic bands, maybe the AA plants that glow/move will respond to magic bands in the immediate vicinity. That was something that I was thinking about.

The only "problem" with that is that they can't up charge for it.

Good points. Ya- thinking about Asia- there's not much shopping at all over there. EE and a couple carts. I can't even think of any in Dino-land.

There's definitely a shop ("run by Chester and Hester") basically in between the carnival area and the Dinosaur ride. When you exit Dinosaur the path basically takes you to it. I feel like there is also a gift shop in the Dino Institute as you exit the ride, but could be mistaken.

But it is true/interesting that there is somewhat of a dearth of retail in DAK.

You are correct! there is shops around Dinoland, but they are both near each other and not very big. I really like Attraction specific merchandise and my recent trip last week I was saddened to see the only two Dinosaurs left to purchase are the Alioramus and T-Rex. I remember buying a few when I was younger and thinking they were awesome. It is kind of weird they don't sell the Igaunadon or Carnotaurus anymore, seeing as they are the main Dinosaurs in DINOSAUR. But oh well.....

I believe that the Discovery Island Outfitters store is going to double in size as part of the overall park expansion at DAK. That is a shopping location.

The one thing I liked about some of the shopping in DAK, even though some of the locations are small, is that they are very park specific, some like EE, are even ride specific.

That is the whole point 3 of Disney's parks are undeveloped by a good 10 attractions per park.

I'm not convinced Pandora will make it a "full day park". Maybe "full day park Lite"?

In reference to the fun Cars Land analogy that started this thread...

DCA - 2015
31 Attractions, 21 of them are Rides
5 are E Ticket Rides (Soarin' Over California, Tower of Terror, California Screamin', Grizzly River Run, Radiator Springs Racers)
3 are D Ticket Rides (Little Mermaid Omnimover, Toy Story Midway Mania, Goofy's Sky School)
13 are B or C Ticket Rides (Mickey's Fun Wheel, Monsters Inc. Dark Ride, Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, Silly Symphony Swings, etc., etc.)
10 Attractions that aren't rides (It's Tough To Be A Bug, Frozen Sing-Along, Disney Animation pavilion, etc.)
1 Parade (Pixar Play Parade) 1 major stage show (Disney's Alladin) 1 night spectacular (World of Color)

DAK - 2017 after Pandora opens
16 Attractions, 9 of them are Rides
5 are E Ticket Rides (Everest, Kali River Rapids, Dinosaur, Kilimanjaro Safari, Pandora E Ticket)
2 D Ticket Rides (Primeval Whirl, Pandora Boat Ride)
2 are B or C Ticket Rides (Train to Conservation Station & Triceratops Spin)
7 Attractions that aren't rides (It's Tough To Be A Bug, Maharajah Trek, Conservation Station exhibits, Pandora wildlife walk-thru, etc.)
2 major stage shows (Finding Nemo, Festival of the Lion King) 1 night spectacular (ROL)

When construction is complete in 2017, DAK will be able to meet DCA's current standard when it comes to E Tickets and major entertainment. But there's still a huge deficit when it comes to smaller attractions like immersive D Tickets or a collection of smaller spinner C Tickets or dark rides. Although it helps that animal lovers can extend out stuff like Maharajah Trek and Conservation Station to an hour or so to really stop and watch the animals.

But when it comes to actual rides in a theme park, DAK has a long way to go. Probably the furthest of all the WDW that have a fascinatingly stubborn deficit of actual rides.

Good point. I havent been to the revamped DCA yet, but as a first time visitor- I'm planning on spending 1.5-2 days there. Is DCA really just a "full day park" or is it more than that? (Haven't ever been)

I think you can do justice to DCA in a single day.

I think you're being very generous in your ride rankings. I'd definitely drop Kali and Primeval Whirl down to at least a D and at least a C. IMO, B tickets are things like spinners, flat rides, etc.

Adding Pandora as well as nighttime safaris and Rivers of Light will really help the Animal Kingdom, but I agree that it probably needs 1 or 2 more D-tickets to be truly considered a full day experience for most. I won't have a problem spending a full day there, but I certainly understand that shows and animal exhibits aren't for everyone.

So we just spent three full days at DL resort during one of the busiest weeks of the year, and we all agreed it was plenty of time. Just do the commando/kamikaze type planning thing, get there well in advance of rope drop, etc. plan it well. And wear good shoes. If you're a WDW vet, you know the drill. And you'll be able to do it all, and do it well. And pity the people who show up at 10AM and get angry at the lines . . .

It obviously is going to depend on your touring style and how much you want to do. But I think that 1.5-2 days at DCA is just about right. One day at DCA, doing commando style open to close, would get you all the highlights and be fine, but you wouldn't get as much appreciation from the park.

I will say, though, that the ride count does include a significant number of off the shelf type carnival rides. There's nothing wrong with that, but you aren't missing out if you don't get to go on Golden Zephyr or Jumpin' Jellyfish, etc.

Rides, rides rides, that's all anyone cares about. If it can't be marked off on a list and compared to a similar list from some other park, it has no value to the ADD generation (which is now partnering with Apple and Samsung to raise an even ADD-ier generation).

Know what Animal Kingdom has?

Wait for it...

Animals! If people would just chill the heck out when they're in DAK (or in life), we'd never have to have another circular conversation about it being a half day park ever again. Take some time to smell the watusi dung. Honestly I could spend 9 to 6 in DAK only riding KS and spending the rest of the day with the animals. But nobody has an appreciation for living things any more. At least not enough of an appreciation to slow down and take it in for awhile.

End rant.

I'm the same. They have to kick us out of the park. Can't wait for it to be open later. And yes, I am amused at how people are freaking out because they aren't on a ride every second. Life's too short to be stressed out on a vacation. Relax and enjoy it :)
