Trip Report This was supposed to have been last year's trip!

Hello all fellow Disney geeks! I'm Dave, & I'm proud to say that I am to, & to a milder extent so are my wife & son-- but I am the family's over-the-top Disney fan: I'm a former home-based travel agent for AAA of western NY for only Disney destinations, so I am a "College of Knowledge" Disney grad as well . . . I gave this up when AAA got to be a pain to deal with-- nothing at all against Disney-- it was all AAA.

Last year we started a post on our upcoming trip to WDW. My wife Andi & I would be coming on our own for the 1st time to celebrate our 25th anniversary as our son Kevin would be in college (he'd asked for his last summer "kid" trip with us to be hiking with our dogs in the Adirondacks) . . . BUT I've heard it said that if you want God to laugh, tell Him your plans: Just before the end of his senior year in high school, Kevin developed pain in his left shoulder, & after visits to doctors & then to the E.R., he was ultimately diagnosed with a rare pediatric cancer. But that same God who threw us that curveball also blessed us with living in Buffalo NY with the excellent Children's Hospital & Roswell Park Cancer Institute in our backyard.

Upon diagnosis, the doctors warned that there'd be a very difficult 8 months or so ahead, but they were committed to helping Kevin beat this. And they were right: it was absolute hell for Kevin & for us as well, but true to their word, Kevin is now well & finally getting his life back! At his request, further info. is being kept strictly confidential, so there will be no more details given.

But some minimal mention was necessary to explain the reason behind this year's trip. As he was still 17 when diagnosed, hospital staff put us in touch with Make-A-Wish, & while Kevin at 1st was hesitant to accept, the Make-A-Wish representatives assured him that they're not just for little kids & that they exist for the purpose of helping all kids-- big & small-- to have a great time after they'd been thru such a tough one. They discussed many possible plans with Kevin, but he ultimately decided that he wanted to go back to WDW-- a place he knows & loves & where he can do what he likes at his own pace, as he's still recovering. M-A-W managed to get Kevin's wish granted before his 18th birthday, their cut-off age. Now that the background info's over, here are our upcoming trip details:

Our 2016 trip had been planned for August for 2 in Port Orleans Riverside. Thanks for the help from Kingdom Konsultants to replan from 2 to 4 for this year. We'd been planning to take Kevin & either his cousin or a friend to celebrate anyway, even before hearing from Make-A-Wish. So we now have 2 rooms at All-Star Music for 5 nights with a 5-day (4 + 1 free) pass. Kevin invited Garrett, one of his closest friends whom he'd known from 14 years of school together. This part of the trip Andi & I pay for, & thanks to Jill of K.K. for keeping up with all of our changes! Then we start with Kevin's MAW portion of the trip: 6 nights at Disney's Wilderness Lodge, then 2 nights at Daytona Beach. So we'll have 13 nights in FL!

After our initial self-funded time at WDW, Make-A-Wish is providing passes for 4 to 1 day at SeaWorld, 2 days at Universal, & 3 days at WDW, including hoppers & water parks, lodging & contribution toward meals & expenses. All they ask for in return is that we meet with their affiliate Give Kids the World & provide MAW with photos & notes. I'm a published photographer from the days of film, currently using a digital SLR with multiple lenses on a recreational basis, so I'll just be sharing with them what I'd be doing for fun anyway!

So this should be a wonderful trip with a lot of fun! MAW & GKTW seem to know how to manage things , , , I was concerned at 1st 'cause without advance info re. our #s, I couldn't preset fast passes, just our meal reservations for their part of the trip, BUT-- they provide the MAW child's group "Genie Wishes Pass" (access to alternate access to all parks & events, & no fast passes necessary) which is really good news as Kevin's still rebuilding his endurance. Of course we're all looking forward to being in attendance for the opening weekend of Pandora-- hoping there'll be a soft opening we can access before the official date!

This will be all of our 1st time at SeaWorld. For the Z's, this is our 2nd time at Universal & 6th at WDW . . . I was also there twice each in the '70s & '80s . . . Kevin & Garrett were there together for their senior class trip in November 2015. After a very difficult past year, we're all looking forward to just relaxing & having fun together! This catch-up-to-date has been a bit lengthy, but I promise that updates will be more concise. We enjoy reading the other posts . . . this is actually the 1st completed one of our own!

Itinerary in next posting , , ,

Wonderful photos! I haven't seen Pandora but plan to watch it before my next trip to enjoy the attractions more.
Hopefully it won't be as crowded as when you were there.

Day 12: Tuesday, May 30th 2017 at MK & everywhere!

Our last WDW day has arrived, & while we'll be sad to see it go, we're also ready: very little
has been left undone. We launch the day in a big way: Crystal Palace for breakfast. Many
of the restaurants we went to, including the character dining, was new for Garrett, & he made
the most of opportunities for photos, as did Kevin (proving both that it never gets old, & you're
never too big to play like a kid!). We then made a circuit of our MK favorites-- somehow, it
just seems right to begin & end a visit at MK. The boys then decide to break off & max-hop
thru all the parks to do all of their favorites, so I purchased the bus express passes for them
& they were off. Dave & I spent a bit more time in MK, then hopped on the monorail to finish
our last bit of shopping: new Hawaiian shirts at the Polynesian gift shop. This is literally the
only place where Dave will pay premium $ to add to his collection, & he found a couple of
great new prints. We also scored a limited-edition print of Pluto trying to convince Stitch to
play at the beach. Can't wait to get it into a frame & up on the wall! We monorailed back to
MK, where we caught a boat back to WL. That's the way to travel! After changing, we got
back to the Contemporary to check in with the boys for dinner at Chef Mickey's, which had
always been a tradition of our trips, but which I think we're going to curtail. Somehow it just
didn't seem as much fun anymore, the quality didn't seem to be quite the same, & the noise
& parents allowing their kids to climb anywhere just didn't suit any of us, so sad to say, but
we don't plan to return. Still, it had been a good day . . . & we took the boat back to WL to
finalize the sorting & packing for the next morning. We wouldn't need an early start as we
were going to spend a day in Daytona to decompress from the WDW rush, so Kevin &
Garrett would be able to sleep in. We hot tubbed, showered, & closed our last WDW day.

Day 13: Wednesday, May 31st 2017 at Daytona Beach

Casual wake-up since there's no need to rush: luggage is prepped to go, ready for check-out
any time before 11am, & there's no rush to get to Daytona, since we're just planning on taking
in a little beach time to relax & unwind for a day before driving back to Buffalo the next day.
Dave & I treat ourselves to another breakfast from Geyser Point counter service-- you've got
to try the poached eggs on crab cakes if you ever eat there! Then we check on Kevin & Garrett
to see if they need any help, but they're all set except for the remainder of their toiletries & a
couple fragile souvenirs they need help rewrapping & tucking between clothes inside a suitcase
for safe transport back home. Everyone has a small bag of clothes for the next day, so we won't
have to take luggage up to our rooms for just 1 night. At 10:30am, 2 staff arrive with luggage
carts to take our bags & cooler to the front door to be loaded into our truck. After thanks & good
wishes, we're off to Daytona, with nothing but good memories of the stay at Wilderness Lodge.

The drive to Daytona was uneventful, & after a Waffle House breakfast (yes, we love 'em, even
once drove with Kevin for breakfast at the nearest one to Buffalo, in Ashtabula, Ohio!), we got
to our hotel (right on the beach, of course!) & checked in to very nice rooms with a view. What
to do? Take a walk on the beach, of course, & pick up a couple touristy items at one of those
beachy gift shops just for the fun of it. Dinner was simple but decent at the hotel restaurant, &
then time for another walk & a soak in the hot tub. We seem to meet some really interesting &
fun people in hot tubs, seems to happen every time someone joins us at one. Time for showers
& bed then!

Next morning was gorgeous, with the remnants of clouds from last night's thunderstorm that never
came to land reflecting the sunrise. Dave snuck out to take photos of the dawn & of the dozens of
pelicans fishing offshore while I had a cup of coffee & watched from our balcony. We still had time
for 1 more walk down to the pier & back before we had to wake up the boys & head out. It was nice
to have a slow day to catch up on sleep & not have to rush anywhere to recharge before the long
drive home. We made sure to catch another Waffle House while we were still south enough on our
route to find one. Dave also timed our departure perfectly to avoid both the drive-to-work traffic in
Daytona & the drive-home rush in Charleston. We drove all day & night, stopping for dinner, & all
was uneventful except for 1 traffic jam due to an accident (sorry, Kevin, that was during your drive
shift!). We arrived home about 6:30am, unloaded the truck, Kevin dropped Garrett off at his house,
& we alternated the day between napping & sorting out the bags!

Dave still has plenty of photos he's going to post, & we'll need to do a Trip Advisor report. But
we're still talking about some of our favorite events . . . I think we're still going to have some final
thoughts to share regarding this trip, so we'll be back at it here again soon!
