Thinking of going to Epcot for NYE

So I’m thinking about going to Epcot for NYE (Passholder, so it easy to do). I’ve been to the MK for NYE the last 2 years. I understand the crowd and all, but if you just accept it and go with it, it seems to be a fun time. Although leaving is a nightmare.

For Epcot, any words of wisdom? I don’t have any Fastpasses yet or dinner reservations. Both are probably hard to come by now. We just try to find things that do not have long lines. At MK, there always things to do that have no lines, like The tree house, the island or the shows (we like the tiki birds).

Anyway, is Epcot anything special on NYE?

It has been years since I have gone to Epcot on NYE, but you seem to know what to expect. I will be at least a little more pleasant walking around than in MK. I'm not sure if they still do this, but they had a nice NYE show with fireworks, also announcing when it turned "midnight" for the various countries in World Showcase.

I've been to Epcot on NYE for the past two years and this year will make the 3rd. It's a much different experience to MK and in my opinion is the better experience.

You'll have to change your focus from rides and attractions to atmosphere. Without fastpasses pretty much every attraction is out of the question, and you won't want to waste much time indoors anyway. The atmosphere around world showcase on NYE is exciting. All around world showcase at different countries there will be different parties going on with live music/DJs, each with their own unique vibe. They will play illuminations twice throughout the evening, and the midnight countdown fireworks are spectacular... maybe my favorite show in all of WDW. My advice would be to make only very loose plans. Spend your time going around world showcase to the different parties and fill up on some of your favorite snacks and drinks along the way.

If you're still fond of the attractions/rides and castle shows, I'd actually recommend double dipping by doing Magic Kingdom on the 30th, which will have the special NYE fireworks just as they do on the 31st, only with smaller crowds. Then you can experience Epcot NYE in all its glory.

Thanks for the info... Now I'm looking forward to it. I think we'll enjoy it. I think I'll stop off at the tequila bar in Mexico, I just saw that this weekend. Not sure of the prices, but good tequila is never cheap.

Glad to hear it.. last advice would be to have a patient attitude, as crowds will get very dense and lines for everything will be longer than you're used to.

This also applies to leaving the park. Expect to have to wait upwards of an hour to leave the park. It's gridlock everywhere.

I would think it's no worse then MK on NYE. At least you walk to the car or just take the tram at Epcot. At MK, you have to take the monorail or boat and then the tram, and then the traffic. I think there would one less step for leaving Epcot. The monorail line at MK was pretty epic on NYE.

Check dining reservations on the app, stuff opens at the last minute. Stake out a good spot for Illuminations, as it's fantastic on NYE.

As far as transportation, when leaving either order an Uber to Yacht/Beach/Boardwalk or pay the $25 to valet at one of those resorts (if you have a car). You'll thank yourself later.

We have gone the last 2 years, and this will be our third. Epcot is our favorite place for NYE. As others have stated, the place is crowded but crowd control has been excellent the last few years. We pretty much just do laps around world showcase stopping at the different dance parties and trying different drinks. Here are my tips from what I've learned the last few years.

Don't plan on riding anything, if you're an AP you've probably done them all already and the lines aren't worth the time.
Don't bother trying to get into that tequila bar. The line will be insane. If you really want to go there, go after the midnight fireworks. The park is open until 1:00am and you should be able to get right in.
If you want to stop at a bar, try the rose and crown. You will see a line outside and can judge if it is worth waiting.
Beer and Wine can be bought at the electric umbrella, usually with a shorter line than other options.
They will have special drink tables setup all over the park to get drinks with a minimal wait.
The best bathrooms at Epcot are behind the Imagination pavilion (this is always true, not just for NYE).
If you need a break from the crowds, sneak out to the Boardwalk. They have entertainment out there all night and there are additional food/drink kiosks setup.
Illuminations at 6:50 is standard illuminations with the holiday tag, can be viewed from anywhere around the lagoon.
Midnight fireworks launch from the lagoon, plus they launch from behind each country as they countdown to midnight. If you want to see them all, you will want to be on the futureworld side of the lagoon.
The best way to avoid traffic at park closing is ??????.

I haven't quite figured out that last one yet. Driving isn't an option for me.

First year we took an uber to the park in late afternoon, price was about $10 from bonnet creek. Surge pricing at park closing estimated $95 to get back. We then went to the boardwalk to try to catch a taxi, didn't work no taxis to be found and many other people with the same idea. Walked to the dolphin, finally got a taxi around 2:30am, ride home was around $15.

Second year, we stayed at Saratoga and tried to take the Disney bus back to the resort. Got to the bus stop around 1:30 and we were still in line waiting for a bus around 2:30. Checked the uber app and surge went down, ended up taking an uber back to saratoga for around $25.

This year, we'll be a bonnet creek again. I still don't have a plan on how to get back. Probably end up hanging out around the boardwalk again until uber surge dies down.

More great info, thanks. Bummed about the tequila bar. Maybe I'll wait my turn and just do a flight, I don't want to get too tired.
I didn't find the traffic all that bad from MK, once we got to our car. It might be because it took so long to get to our car, I think it was about 1:30 or 1:45 by the time we got to the car.

Sounds like Epcot is the place to be for NYE.

They have a walk up section of the bar that shouldn't be too bad, maybe 20 minutes or so. But waiting for a table in there will probably be much longer, I think there are only around 25 seats. There are some standing tables too, not sure if the hostess seats them or if it is first come. Crowds sometimes come in waves, so if you're near Mexico it is probably worth popping in and asking how long the wait is.

After waiting for the bus back to Saratoga last year, I made it a condition for this year's trip that we had to stay at Swan & Dolphin or it's a no-go. Makes the end of the night a whole lot easier.

A little off topic, but what's with the Swan & Dolphin? We always call it the Swan & Carp, because that statue is no Dolphin - It has Scales! Dolphins don't have scales.

"The dolphin was inspired by the work of Italian sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini. An example of these dolphins can be seen at the King Neptune fountain at the Italian pavilion in Epcot. "

The architect, Michael Graves, modeled his dolphins after the sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini's depiction of Dolphins in some of his work.

As far as drink tips go if you like beer, there is usually some beer on ice at the small souvenir stand in USA (in front of the USA gift shop in the building). It's kind of random, and no one really notices it, but if you're okay with the selections there it's one of the extremely few places where you shouldn't have a wait to get a drink.

Thanks for the info. Not much of a beer drinker. But I do like most other adult beverages, in volume once in a great while.
