The worst decision WDW ever made?

True. Avartarland is the one of the rare projects that I get excited to hear about budget cuts.

Why, though? What's the point of wanting an attraction or expansion to fail or not have the best resources possible? If it's shortchanged too much, it will affect the quality of the attractions, and then people will complain that Disney went cheap and the attractions aren't as good as they should be. Like I've said before, the actual theme of the attraction doesn't always make or break the attraction itself. Go back to my Splash Mountain example. I'd bet at least 90% (and that's being conservative) of the WDW guests in 2014 have never seen the entirety of Song of the South, but it's still one of the most popular and beloved attractions in the entire park.

Yeah, I can get not liking the movie, but actually hoping that a project inspired by it fails? That's just... I don't know. If you don't like it, don't go. But I'd think that Avatarland being a success would be good all around for WDW as it would drive attendance, and thus revenue, which would ideally get funneled back into other areas of the parks.

The project being a success likely furthers Disney just dropping in properties wherever based on nothing more than box office, not a formula for creative sustained creative success.

Except it's not based just on box office. Story aside, the setting itself is very rich with potential, and the themes of the film are a very good fit for Animal Kingdom.

The project was chosen on nothing more than box office, and that should be disturbing to everyone regardless of whether or not they look forward to the result.

Can you prove that statement? Upload a memo from a Disney exec stating as such?
Why don't you upload the memo where the upper echelons discussed the story of Disney's Animal Kingdom? This was an upper level decision that did not include the Imagineer who conceived the park and the very people who a few weeks ago were shocked to learn that Frozen at Walt Disney World amounted to a meet and greet. The same people who talk in interviews about DisneyParks® being just about franchises and made their names at Disney pursuing those very ideas.

... So, that's a no, then? You CAN'T credibly back up your claim.

Well, let's look at a parallel. 30 years ago, the company went outside and tapped a hot sci-fi property for park attractions. That worked out pretty well, didn't it?
The reasons for wanting those properties is rather well documented, and it was because of box office performance. But those were also seen as stop-gap measures to help jump start a process of engaging talent for other projects. The current leadership has shown absolutely no indication of such a process being at work and deny the appropriateness of Walt Disney Imagineering self-generating content.

Avatarland was clearly a knee jerk reaction I would think Disney wishes they thought about a little more. That said, I do think Disney has the resources and talent to make it a nicely themed land and a badly needed addition to AK. Whether or not it's the best land they could have conceived is another discussion.

When I say I like to see budget cuts on Avatar I don't mean that I want to see it fail. I mean that I want to see a minimum impact on the park as a whole. I'm not a fan of Avatar, & regardless, I'm not a fan of using trendy properties for major theme park overhauls.

If that is the case, it was the slowest "knee jerk" that ever existed. They have been planning this probably before Uni started planning HP. It might be a mistake or it might not, time will tell. But, it was hardly an impulse move. DAK needed something and this was the closest that they could do to match the location in any degree. Since none of us have actually seen the final result, I, for one, am going to withhold my opinion until I see what we get.
