The Wife Stayed Home Trip Report

After spending a fair amount of time on these boards I figured it was time for me to try my own trip report. My daughter and I love being at Disney. My wife is not the enthusiast that we are, so when she decided to spend the weekend wit her sister for her birthday, it opened the door for a hastily planned trip for Dad and daughter. This is the 4th time my 7 year old girl has been in the last couple of years, but the excitement level never goes down. Eventhough the event was planned in about a week and a half, she wanted to know why we couldn’t leave immediately.

It worked out that we could go on the second weekend in August. We had gone the same time last year and found the park not to be overly busy with some schools having already started. It works out to be the weekend before she goes back to school, so we call it our last summer blowout before she starts the schoolwork.

It also doubled as a photography trip for me to play with all the new toys I have acquired since re taking up photography. At this point, I must acknowledge someone on this board whom I have never met or even talked to, but in seeing his work on the boards, it motivated to pick up a hobby I really love. WDWFigment (Tom Bricker), hat's off to a great photographer.

For a 7 year old, my daughter is a true Disney junkie and a warrior in the parks (you’ll see what I mean a little later). We took off on a Thursday afternoon and got to Orlando around 6:00 pm and made a quick jaunt to our hotel, The Swan. We normally do stay on the monorail, but this time with the short lead in, The Swan fit the bill. Significantly less than the Contemp and readily available. I really wasn’t sure what to expect and really was pleasantly surprised. The hotel is nice and the rooms were large. We quickly dropped the luggage off and headed for Hollywood Studios. My daughter is an adrenaline junkie like her dad and for the last 8 months we have been charting height with the hope that she could ride the only rollercoaster she hasn’t on the property, Rock N Rollercoaster.

Right before the moment of truth

Before we left we had measured and I knew it would be close. We hurried our way over and up to the measurement area and…………… nope, missed it by a hair. While a little disappointed, we were still with in eye site of another favorite, Tower of Terror.

Wait times were almost non-existent and it only took about 7 minutes to have the miss on height forgotten. Now while I love Disney, this trip was extra fun as I was able to test out a good bit of photo gear including some new lenses. What better test than the ghosts on TOT.

With the lines nice and short and an excited 7 year old, we did TOT 3 times in a row. After that it was off to Star Tours. The new show is really good.

Once out from Star Tours, it was time for my daughter’s other favorite at Disney………..Shopping. As it was 9:00, I knew it wasn’t going to be bad on the pocketbook. As we headed for the shops on the way out, it allowed me to run around for some pictures of the park at night. It ended up being a great first night.

Nngrendel- Don't ever worry about hijacking a thread. Ask away. The fisheye is a Bower 8mm. It's pretty much a manual lens, but for the price its a lot of fun.

What body are you using? I really think a photography group forming and planning a once a year meetup in Disney for a weekend for just shooting would be a blast!

Very cool you are able to take your daughter like that. Enjoy your time because they do grow up sooooooooo fast. My daughter just turned 15 and we got her learners permit this weekend.

I shoot with a couple of bodies. Both Canon. i have a 60-D which did most of the work on the last trip, but I also used a 1DmarkII. You are right, a group would be a really cool idea.

You are right, they do grow up quick, but if I start thinking about learners permits now, I may have a nervous breakdown.:hammer:

That picture of the Yeti confirms what I saw during the second week of August.

An "improved" B-mode with the Yeti positioned over the tracks with his hand out and mouth open. Combined with the fans blowing his hair, and a roaring sound, it appeared that the Yeti was moving.

Not close to "A-mode" but a much better show than when we rode EE in 2009.

Thanks again for the great pics!

Day 4

Day 4- So here we go again, Em is up fairly early and surprisingly she wants to head back to Epcot. I say surprisingly because she tells me her new favorite ride is Soarin. She had ridden it one other time before this trip and didn’t even remember it. Well I’m all for change, so off we went. We hit Soarin, Test Track, Mission Space round a few times with a sprinkling of Spaceship Earth

It was then off to lunch at Downtown Disney at Earl of Sandwich. We had never ventured to Downtown Disney before and between shopping and photo opportunities we had a great time. The sandwich was pretty darn good too. During lunch, I told Em that since it was our last night that she could pick what we were doing. She knew we were supposed to go to Hollywood Studios and see Fantasmic, but she was choosing. She didn’t see the castle show and Wishes from the night before as she was on Space Mountain and after she saw the pictures this is what she wanted to do. It also helped that it was a Sunday night extended hours, so she knew we would do some riding

Once we got to MK, it was off to Space Mountain for fast passes and then Em wanted to ride the Tea Cups. Something about going round and round and round and round that kids love and grown-ups tend to hate. Once we stopped spinning, I realized where we were and couldn’t resist snapping a picture over the wall of the new Beast Castle.

Day 4 Continued

From there we wandered over to Casey’s for a quick bite and then a set up for the Castle show and Wishes. I was able to set up a little further over than the night before, but not much. Next time we go, I am going to try and get more centered to the castle. I also commented on the Day 3 pics that I would have better shots from the castle show. Knowing what was coming up I was able to do a lens change and shoot from my tripod.

After wishes, the realization of our last night at Disney started to sink in and we decided to hit the rides one last time.

We made our way to the exit and out front. We didn't close the park on our last night, but it was pretty close.
