So... for all of those lowly soles who aren't going to WDW any time soon... or those who don't live near a quality theme park... I offer you Beech Bend Amusement Park. Since the closing of Opryland, Beech Bend is the closest thing that the good folks in Nashville have to a theme park.

Why, it's just like being at Walt Disney World. Afterall, they have the same rides and attractions!

What YellowRocket meant to say was that this is the orange wearing mtn folk of Tennessees WDW.

The very distinguished people who reside in the great state of Georgia (and wear Red) know WDW is THE WDW of the South. :p

Sorry, none of those rides are similar to the actual rides in WDW. The only things of similarity are Dumbo, Carpets, and the railroad. In a park her in New England, we have a ride called "Matterhorn Bobsleds" and it's the exact same ride as the Everest "look alike" you showed us. The only thing of similarity between those rides and the ones in WDW is that they have the same type of character, nothing like the same ride system or format of ride, whatever.

I used to work at Opryland. 50 hours a week with no overtime, and you started at minimum wage. Oh, and those horrible brown double-knit pants. Those were the days....

But, yeah, it closed in the early 1990s. To be replaced with a shopping mall called Opry Mills.

Yeah, I wonder what Roy Acuff would think now. I can still see those wonderful pictures of him waving at the guests on the rapids ride that they had. Sad.

I understand that it provided a lot of regular work for Nashville musicians who weren't quite stars yet, too.

Gaylord (same company that runs the Gaylord Palms near WDW) certainly lost a good thing there, in my opinion. Seems bizarre now to have the Opryland Hotel and an "Opryland" exit... but no Opryland!!! :lookaroun

I saw Mr. Acuff once on the rapids ride. He had his own little landing and a big white rocking chair to sit in. He was pretty inconspicuous there; my sister said, "Look, it's Roy Acuff!" He just looked so flattered to be recognized.

It's my understanding that the Gaylord Palms was originally going to be an Opryland Hotel but after the park was bulldozed they went with Gaylord instead. I've also heard that Gaylord is now regretting tearing down Opryland because they aren't making much money off the shopping mall.

Serves them right. Philistines.

I never knew we had WDW near here!!!! I've lived here a year now. Where is Beech Bend, by the way? I greatly miss Opryland, and could use a fix. Even a minor one! Come swing down to the Richland area if you ever need a quick Disney discussion!
