It could've been good, but of course Fox had to go for "drama" and add the cheesy camera angles and lingering shots of the "Swan Team" as the woman comes through. This truly could've shown a woman's coming to feel that she's something more than "average". It's just a spectacle, though, just like nearly all these "reality" shows are.

Long-winded opinion ahead:

I only saw this for about 5 seconds tonight and flipped the channel, but the concept (as I understand it) really bugs me. Fox has done a lot of things that are "out there," but this is the first one to really bother me for some reason. Again, I haven't seen this for any length of time, so I might be off in my understanding of what it's all about.

The trailer characterizing these women as "ugly ducklings" was the first thing to turn me off, and the clip I saw tonight was of a woman who had been made over some and was crying.

This show seems to take "average"-looking women (women I would call attractive as they are) and tell them a.) You're not OK the way you are and b.) We can "fix" you, changing nothing but your physical appearance.

I just find this really repugnant, because physical appearance is one of the things American women are "trained" to be insecure about. So are men, to some extent, but women are hit especially hard with these ideas. So this show is, as I see it, taking advantage of something that is already a touchy subject, playing off raw emotions, and purporting to "help" these women through nothing but cosmetics.

And as if that weren't enough, it then throws even the semblance of legitimacy out the door by making all the women compete in a tired beauty pageant.

This is the opinion of a 22 year old heterosexual guy who enjoys seeing a girl in a bathing suit as much as the next guy. I just flinch when I see the kind of blatant emotional manipulation that seems to be going on here for the express purpose of fitting a bunch of women into a swimsuit.

OK, done sticking up for the fair gender for the moment.

I think everything you said was right on, however, I don't have too much "sympathy" (I guess that's the word I want) for the women on the show. They volunteered to be there and knew exactly what was going on. If Fox people had just walked down the street and picked out random women and said,"Hey, you're somewhat homely, want us to fix you?" THEN I'd have more of a strong opinion. Having said that, I have no desire to watch that show again. It was really dumb, lol.

I'm just glad I spent my formidable years finding Kurt Cobain more interesting than Cindy Crawford. :animwink: My self esteem has stayed relatively intact. (Plus, having 4 children kinda puts "body image" into perspective... you kinda learn to be amazed by what it can do, rather than appalled by what it looks like.)

I personally feel people should accept themselves for who they are and not change their looks through surgery.

Not including NEEDED surgery.

This show is just horrible.

Next season on Fox: "The Dolphin"

See what happens when 13 aquatically-challenged women learn to eat raw fish and communicate through high-pitched squeals (and you definitely won't want to miss the unforgettable "blowhole" episode). :lookaroun
