I know that pretty much everyone on the planet knows this by now, but I'm gonna share it anyway. You know how back in January, Disney announced that they got the film rights to Hamilton? They had planned to give it a release in October of 2021, but they've backtracked recently and decided to release it straight to Disney+ this July, just in time for Independence Day.

Can someone PLEASE tell me why everyone's loosing their minds over Robert Pattinson not being all that concerned about working out to play Batman? Campea went on a HALF-HOUR rant about it and said it was spitting in the face of the fans and the character. I think that's just an absolutely RIDICULOUS stance to take, especially for someone with as much clout in the film commentary culture as Campea. I mean, it's not like Keaton was rocking a six pack back in the day. I really don't understand the anger about Pattinson wanting to put more commitment into...you know...the actual ACTING than growing out his freaking muscles. I just...don't get it...in the slightest...

The same reasoning as thinking that Superman is OP but Batman can beat anyone "given enough time to prepare". A stupidly simplistic view of what the character "should" be rather than actually looking at the character as a 3-dimensional creation with different facets to explore, which is what is needed after the cinematic character assassinations that were Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

A character assassination which...I might add...featured BY FAR the most muscular Batman we've ever had. ;)

That's not even to say a muscular Batman is bad. The Arkham games probably have the biggest Batman in terms of sheer musculature and they're some of my favorite depictions of Batman (ending of Arkham Knight aside). But especially since this Batman is going to be a detective before a brawler, I think a slimmer Batman would be wonderful.

There are no movies, I havent listened to him in months, so my guess he needs to have a controversial take to get attention and clicks.

I'd rather see a detective batman, it's something different

I'm not surprised that he's trying to drum up a hot take, what does surprise me though is that he spent a solid half hour trying to justify it. The dude is so hot and cold with me. He's at times either the most insightful or idiotic person in the film commentary community.

Maybe it's just me getting older or having more confidence in my own views but I find myself watching reviewers less and less because I just dont care what they think? Because as long as I like a movie that's all that matters!

Oh, that's very fair when it comes to critique. I watch Campea more because I think he does a really good job of breaking down the news and think he's got an excellent track record of not covering anything that isn't legitimate. It's his opinions that turn me off.

That being said, Stuckmann and Jeremy Jahns are my gold standard when it comes to trusting their opinions, but only because their tastes are very similar to mine in different ways. I think that's the key to film criticism that I've learned from my podcasting is to not try to make your reviews for a wide audience but instead for a more niche audience who might have the same sort of weird tastes you do.

Sadly, that's true of many of these YouTube critics. Doug Walker, CinemaSins, Schaffrillas Productions, Red Letter Media; all of these people thrive off being overly hateful and nitpicky, because the algorithm favors negativity over positivity and well-thought out criticism. Sure, some people who fall into the "positivity and well-thought out criticism" camp get recognized by the algorithm, like Lindsay Ellis, but for the most part...yeah, no.

I really enjoy Schaffrillas. I think he tows the line between being fun-but-nitpicky (THAT WAS HIS MISTAKE!) and legitimately insightful. I've never gotten the hate for him. I can't STAND CinemaSins. Doug Walker's quality varies wildly from episode to episode but I've been really enjoying some of his recent non-NC stuff, especially his series on messed up old cartoons. Red Letter Media is a bit of an enigma. They're the grandaddies of the nitpick-critics. I respect that they don't take themselves seriously though. I think they're a refreshing breath of fresh air compared to the most LA try-hards in the community. Best of the Worst will never cease to be a good comfort food option when I can't find anything else to watch.
