Professor Pure's Pleasant Privies

Area Music

From the opening of The Microverse and the Turkey Pavilion in 1988, EPCOT Center saw several changes over the years, as we arrive in 2021 at the cusp of Walt Disney World's 50th anniversary.
Epcot%2B2023.jpg

1996 - Test Track opens

2003 - Mission: SPACE opens
2005 - Soarin' opens
2014 - The Wetch opens in the UK Pavilion
2019 - Brava Centauri restaurant opens
2021 - Guardians of the Galaxy and the Play Pavilion open in Future World East

2021 - New Innoventions Plaza and Restrooms installed.

Typically when you think of stopping in a restroom, especially in a theme park, it is something that should be an expedited affair. You want to get in and out as quickly as possible, for several reasons, one of which being that it could be dirty, and is less thematically inclined compared to the rest of the park experience.

Nevertheless, in Future World West - the new restrooms installed have revolutionized the way you think of a bathroom break in the park.

Blending in with the glasswork on this side of the park, and the new established greenery in Innoventions Plaza, the restrooms like all things in Disney tell a story of experimentation and a prototype of how we can live cleanly in the future.

According to legend, Professor Pure was the most famous scientist when it came to studying cleanliness. He has created robotic messengers to help spread cleaning to every household. To show how his new invention works, he has set up a restroom at Epcot that works both as a restroom and a showcase!

Professor Pure's Pleasant Privies provides a spacious accommodation in the middle of Future World and offers guests one of the most well themed and decadent lavatory stops in all of the Disney Parks & Resorts.

The restroom facade portrays an aura of whimsical fantasy and futuristic architecture. The alliteration in the title follows suit with that theme.

Unlike most restrooms that have a jaded or attempt to remain incognito throughout the park experience - this restroom pavilion is front and center within all the action - showcasing its design in the forefront from the exit of the Imagination! Pavilion. Inside, Professor Pure's robotic creation, the Sparkle Cleaner Mark 82, keeps the restrooms clean and the environment smelling fresh. SC for short, the design is an homage to the robotic butler from Horizons, one above the sink mirrors in each bathroom. While they are static, they can communicate with the guests, complimenting them on a good job when they wash their hands or use the soap. Positive reinforcement that we describe below...

Since EPCOT is all about edutainment - throughout the restroom are Professor Pure's tips and tricks for small children (and possibly adults) on how to wash your hands properly and rid of bacteria and germs that you pick up throughout your day. The helpful tips make cleaning up fun and enjoyable - as well as provide further insight on how to keep yourselves clean.

Furthermore, throughout the restroom, there are digital monitors (in the stalls and on the walls near the urinals) that provide guests with EPCOT related wait-times, show-times, weather, as well as Disney trivia on the go (and as you go!) The monitors also illustrate how the 'SC' technology uses effective automation to keep the areas clean and how we can all play a part in a cleaner and healthier world going forward.

Additionally, using smelitzer technology, (rather than smelling the, at times, grotesque smells of bathrooms), they continually have a fresh aroma hanging in the air to drown out any unwanted smells.

Detailed below is the topographical layout of the restroom, divided into male and female facilities, with plenty of room in both to accommodate long lines of people heading for any of the other attractions in the area.
bath.jpg

As a ceremonious and comedic gesture during EPCOT's Food and Wine Festivals each fall, guests who consume copious amounts of beverages are given a 'Fastpass' to Professor Pure's Pleasant Privies as a souvenir for their efforts and inevitably full bladder.

Ultimately, while a themed restroom, the integration with the message of EPCOT plays a large role in how this addition is special and worth a 'pit-stop' on your next Disney vacation. While involving edutainment and a clean rest area for guests in a heavy volume area of the park, it integrates several of the themes of other EPCOT pavilions. From ridden the microscopic bacteria and germs only seen at the 'microverse' level, to keeping the earth clean and without pollutants as attributed in The Land Pavilion, to health and wellness of the former Wonders of Life pavilion, to using your Imagination! as Professor Pure has done with this invention. It all ties in with the greater story of EPCOT Center while fulfilling a restroom need for the park in the process.

The Lavatory Laboratory at Rafiki's Planet Watch

A new, interactive exhibit coming to the newly updated and expanded Rafiki's Planet Watch where YOU can take an active part in learning about one of the most important parts of the world's ecosystems just by using the restrooms!

Click here to see how Bob Iger pitched the idea to potential investors!
(Be sure to hit "Present" in the top right corner and view in full screen)
(The presentation works much better on desktop, but it does work on most mobile devices. If it does not work for you, a simple text transcript can be found at this link)

After the opening of the Lavatory Laboratory, one part of the experience quickly became a viral success...

Hippos do an interesting thing when they poop. They swish their tail around which causes their fecal matter to spray all around. If they are near a wall, they even make splatter patterns. This comedic effect (Besides already being a favorite fun fact of the safari drivers) is demonstrated with a tongue in cheek mural right near the new restrooms.

KNnY6Nh.png

This cheesey photo op with an educational plaque was meant by imagineers to basically just fill up some empty space. But, much like the #PurpleWall and the #BloodyWatermelonWall before it, #HippoSplatterWall became a sought after place to take pictures for Instagram.

Rh9XNOU.jpg

Was it the lighting in this particular spot (being indoors mean controlled lighting)? The color contrast? the comedic nature of the backdrop? Who knows!

I do.

I know.

That's who knows.

Me.

It's the bathrooms. what makes this photowall so special is being right near the restrooms. Since it is adjacent to the bathroom, people are able to freshen up and reapply their makeup or fix their hair before taking the photo. That's a big part of what makes it so popular. Get the freshly done up look even after hours in the park.

Maybe more photo ops should be built around bathrooms. Just look at all these happy picture takers!

Why, even the head of the Walt Disney Company himself had to get in on the action!

eEBunGl.jpg

In order to cash in on the trendy craze, the Shop Disney Merchandise Team got right to work trying to cash in!

Though, they didn't want to use the fan given name of #HippoSplatterWall and started using the much more marketable name: Happy Hippo Merchandise Line! It worked especially well since the Happy Hippo was already used as a mascot of sorts for the Lavatory Laboratory on the buttons they gave out!

Thus, a new line of trendy souvenirs in the signature Hippo Green color were developed. The two biggest hits were the Minnie Ears and the Spirit Jersey!

EUe047t.png

The Animal Kingdom Starbucks Location (Creature Comforts) got in on the action be re-releasing a former temporary specialty drink that features chocolate whip cream for obvious, though not officially stated, reasons.

#HippoSplatterWall has become one of the biggest trends in modern Disney history while helping bring guests into Planet Watch to discover a fun, educational experience wrapped around environmentally friendly restrooms setting a new benchmark for all future bathrooms at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Before I talk about the idea and execution, I wanted to talk about your team. Due to some personal reasons, you were down a couple of people, but you managed to push through and create a great project - like a Warrior should do! Awesome job there!

The best part about this project is the custom art (many done by @NateD1226, right?). Whoever did it, it is awesome. Especially the one with the robot (that is in homage to Horizons, or some other defunct EPCOT attraction, right?)! Beautiful job Nate, and its been awesome to see you grow throughout the contest.

And the EPCOT map by space that I have come to know and love so much. I love the changes made to it for the SAU - it makes the park feel so much more real, especially because I am so familiar with that map/style of map. :)

Talking about the bathroom itself, your concept was sound, safe, and smart. I'm a little worried that it is leaning into too much sci-fi for EPCOT, especially with a giant robot that is not in any attraction, but in the general area itself. But then again that barely matters now that my beloved Guardians of the Galaxy is somehow finding its way there (both irl and in your SAU timeline).

My only concern is logistic wise - how would maintenance get in. Since it is surrounded by greenery on one side and pathways on the other, does that mean that maintenance would be entering through the same door as guests. I think that most Disney bathrooms have a separate entrance. I could be completely wrong on that front and this nitpick could be completely invalid, however.

Overall, I thought your project was nicely executed and a great proposal!

Not going to lie - when I first heard you would be doing a bathroom themed to literal crap (poop, if that gets blurred out), I was in shock. But you held up to your title The Princes of Presentation and created an awesome proposal which convinced me to root for literal (poop, if that gets blurred out). :p :) In other words, awesome job!

Beginning with your presentation (by @Outbound right?) - awesome job. The Elon and Trump references were funny, but not distracting. Overall, this was probably the coolest presentation style of the season - even beating out the trip report and magazine.

Moving onto the #HippoSplatterWall - while I can't understand why this would catch on with social media, that is probably exactly why it would. Putting all of our avatars was a nice touch and hilarious. I can't wait until someone proposes in front of that wall ;)

As for the bathroom itself, it seems nice, clean, etc. Exactly what you needed to write about it. The focus should have been on the surroundings, which you recognized.

Your exhibits were all educational and fun - exactly what people come to Animal Kingdom for. To learn about animals! Overall, this project was way awesome! Great work team!

TEAM WARRIORS
Professor Pure’s Pleasant Privies

Nice work, Warriors. Making themed restrooms is, well, it’s an odd concept. It’s not quite “theme a bench,” but it’s a small-scale idea that’s easily overlooked. Really, guests typically only notice restrooms when they’re done poorly (COUGH! Magic Mountain COUGH!), but they are an absolutely crucial aspect of a public space and thus they offer a unique challenge for theming & immersion.

Epcot’s Future World is a smart decision for a tasteful, edutational lavatory. You’ve captured what I feel is Epcot’s essence (I still ain’t been to Orlando yet), and used it to create a high-toned commode.

This is a short, sweet proposal. There’s no needless filler. Your visuals are perfect in both quantity and quality, working better than words could. Congrats especially to @NateD1226 for his work! I’m a big fan of Sparkle Cleaner Mark 82 (getting minor Shining vibes from him), how he brings character to your facilities and ties in forgotten Epcot history. Nice backstory. Nice focus on the restroom aspects, the nitty-gritty stuff like layout and stall count. You’ve taken a potentially silly stanza seriously.

I do wish there was more info on what makes your Privies futuristic. There’s a fantastic chance to teach guests on upcoming waste management technology, and you’ve largely whiffed in this arena. That’s understandable, real life left Warriors a bit understaffed this week. With your manpower available, I love the work done.

One negative, in contrast to Princes: They better identified how the Tangled Toilets benefited the surrounding area. You focused in on the interior. Something as simple as like a dancing fountain garden (like left of Disneyland’s Tomorrowland entrance) could’ve added to a great foundation. But really, when my main critique is on adding things, rather than questioning what’s there, that’s a sign that you’ve done good work!

TEAM PRINCES

POOP!!!

:hilarious:

Poop is funny!

The Princes of Presentation presently parlay a preposterously puerile poop proposal. Your focus is feces! Your PM likes BMs. Color me surprised that you guys actually followed through on “a bathroom themed to poop.” The end result is more realistic than I thought possible, but there’s still an underlying air of tittering schoolboy juvenilia…

The positives: Rafiki’s Planet Watch likely could benefit from plussing more than most in-park areas. The area’s fact-based ecological mission actually allows for a nicely matter-of-fact discussion about animal waste. Animal Kingdom has a history of addressing scatology (their poo-shaped snacks), albeit one which has earned occasional fan disgust. For a filthy joke concept, this is astonishingly realistic.

Kudos to @PerGronStudio! Again and again he’s found ways to incorporate his zoological knowledge into these challenges. His sincere, non-snickering treatment of animal waste – how it positively impacts the environment & human industry & more – is a huge saving grace for a potentially-sophomoric concept. Top notch!

And yet…

There’s a lot of turd humor here! I get it, and it’s funny. Too much, though, undermines the seriousness. Stuff like that caca emoji, yeah, that’s too much. I suspect @Poo on my Cake is largely responsible! A bit of light-hearted goofiness is warranted and necessary; you’ve just tipped the scales too far. As presented, the Hippo Splatter Wall gets waaaaay too much attention. The idea of a poo-smeared wall, I’m actually not against that (hee hee hee!), but your treatment of it is…undignified.

(In your private brainstorm, the pro-poo contingent wasn’t unanimous. You knew the risks, you took ‘em, and I DO salute your boldness.)

Naturally, Princes’ presentation is on point! That’s always been your strong suit. This could’ve been a show. Good presentations can elevate iffy ideas, which might be the case this week. The project is like 50% tasteful and 50% gross-out. Which way will the scales tip? I honestly have no idea!

Nice work! This bathroom is very believable as we have seen the concept art that Innoventions will be removed (and we just saw the permits proving this). So putting this in that area is definitely realistic. Professor Pure's Pleasant Privie is a fitting, and fun (I mean who doesn't love alliterations!).

I think the bathroom definitely fits the theme of the area and would stand out. I like the idea of the bot within the washroom as a way to make it stand out.

Moving to the "map", I feel like it's odd. It feels like a large bathroom with a lot of awkward space. 16 urinals is a lot!

Overall, there's a nice backstory, a nice theme, and overall nice bathrooms that would work as a good replacement for the area that Innoventions is getting demolished.

Well then... I wasn't expecting that.

But you definitely took the idea and ran with it.

From the presentation, to the Instagram photos, to all the merchandise, I don't even know what to say...

I think the split of stalls and urinals (as well as the family room) is very reasonable!

I think the #HippoSplatterWall is almost as good as #BloodyWatermelonWall ;)

Overall, it was an interesting idea that you took and ran with it and really sold me on the idea.

Previously our decisions have been close, but this was the closest round yet! It was a battle of concepts against presentation. Every single player who contributed in this round should feel proud regardless of the results!

The Warriors of Washrooms
What Warriors did well: A very solid concept with great artwork and good focus on the restroom interior itself. Strong teamwork overcame the unexpected absence of certain select players.
What Warriors did poorly: Apart from the restroom interiors, more attention could have been paid to how this improves the surrounding areas in Future World.

The Princes of Poop
What Princes did well: You made a dirty joke idea into a realistic, fleshed-out and serious proposal with an exceptional boost coming from one of your most distinctive proposals to date.
What Princes did poorly: You made a dirty joke idea.

Congratulations! You are one star closer to completing Yen Sid’s hat!

OUT FOR A SPIN

The victories against villains are just piling up! In fact, of the villainous swarm which once infested Walt Disney World, only one now remains.

But our ever-vigilant heroes never rest. They continue to tour the resort in between battles, continually exploring beloved theme parks purely as research. Only two major locations remain.

First up the following day, the teams scope out Typhoon Lagoon.

enhance

The big highlight involves @James G. showing off his specially-made Americana 1900 swim trunks. This causes an enormous ruckus, and ultimately leads to the entire group being forcibly ejected from the park by security.

“I forgot that the regional park challenge folded James’ Americana 1900 into the Sorcerer’s Apprentice Universe” says @TwilightZone as everyone leaves through the parking lot. “I suppose Disney’s goons feel pretty strongly about their competition.”

This visit to Typhoon Lagoon turned out all wet, so @Evilgidgit proposes relocating to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

The Minnie Vans pass through a minor rift in the space-time continuum while heading south, meaning that rope drop hasn’t happened yet once our heroes reach Animal Kingdom’s entrance.

enhance

Like everyone else at rope drop, our cast plans to begin their day riding on the back of a flying reptile. That’s right! Everyone immediately charges headlong into Dino-Rama for a thrilling, immersive, jaw-dropping flight on Triceratops Spin!

Upon exiting, @NateD1226 and @Outbound have the same response simultaneously: “What a lousy flat ride! Why can’t Disney make more timeless classics in the vein of Dumbo?”
