They should have also not have where Luke tried to assassinate Ben but have it where Ben was too absorbed by the Dark Side and tried to resist Luke or have a spy or something sent by Snoke to come and retrieve Ben in the middle of the night, only to be caught by Luke and get into a battle where it ends with Luke failing to stop the spy, and Ben, from going to Snoke, and the Dark Side. And as for his grumpy old man character, it would have been better to scrap that (and the Casino planet) and have it where more development on Luke’s character and Rey’s training, with a more believable and logical reason for Luke going into exile ( like say he tried to bring back Ben but be forced into hiding because he was stopped by Snoke or one of his forces, nearly killing him but for some reason, like Ben saving his life and pleading that he’d go to hiding, or he managed to escape by a thread(and I know that’s not good writing but at least I tried to come up with a better idea).I think Luke would have been less polarizing if he didn't die after the big twist was revealed. If after he saved the Resistance, then went to his X-Wing in the water, raised it up, and flew off to join them...I think people would have not cared about the hologram.
I just think Holdo had no purpose...she takes over for Leia, and then doesn't tell anyone her plan, which causes Poe to go rogue and causes the entire Canto Bight sequence. What if she just said...hey...we're going to Crait, it's a former Rebel base, that's the plan. You can't tell me Poe would then go rogue and start a whole rebellion against her. So that is a huge plot hole to me.
