@Sam4D23 - Given your proclivity for politics, etc...I'd suggest you get into the older Tom Clancy books, if you have a chance. Read the whole Jack Ryan (not Jack Ryan, Jr.) series...starting with Red October (though it's not the first, it's the easiest read) and moving on from there.

I suspect you'd enjoy them!

Thanks for the suggestion! I will certainly look into them and I guess I'll pick up Red October ASAP.

Red Storm Rising is probably my favorite...but it's very long. If you like Red October, pick that one up next. You won't regret it!

The movies are ok...but really don't do the books justice (the best one, hands down, movie wise, is Red October)...
Thank you for all the suggestions, I will most definitely buy them.

Nice new avatar ;)

Season 3 ep 2...

That meal looks disgusting. Why would a chef stick whole rosemary sprigs in a tomato like that?

Every tried to chew the stuff? It's disgusting...

The chicken looks dry and the greens look wilted.

Bad show! (also, shows you the odd things I think about when watching TV).

Additionally, the inclusion of Pussy Riot as a "nod" while not dealing with the Cossick issue...was merely fan service to a mostly liberal (or ignorant) fan base which doesn't understand the true issues going on there.

Again, this was a writer's choice, and not realistic in any manner.

You really should speak to a Russian to understand Russia...not what is taught. The politics and environment there is a few steps from revolution (surprise surprise), which is why Putin is so heavy handed...

(and, I have very little doubt he was involved in the recent hit, though I'm sure he will never be implicated, and it will fade in international news and memory)

I could go on, but I won't...off to Episode 4, and then to bed!

I'll also say...white hat doesn't operate like it does in the shows...

We...are like subs. Or farts after taco bell. Silent...but deadly.

I really dislike how technology is portrayed by hollywood.

As we control your future, people buy everything they are shown...

The lesson (for those who are not aware of what IT can and does do)....

We know all. We see all. And, it isn't "brilliant hackers" who provide security holes...

It's the most backward thinking I can imagine.

"Social engineering"...as the episode calls it, is really the true issue.

Back in "my day" it was called, social hacking. And it's the most important and best hack...and has NOTHING to do with the computer...because the computer is the hardest obstacle...the USER is not. Users are stupid.

Here's a fun thing to try...do a google search for some middle management person at some organization...

Find a name.

Then do some google search for their phone listings.

Then do random calls, and say "<insert name of important person to them> told me that I needed to get into your computer, just to update it. Can you tell me your password?"

They will...time and again.

Because....people are retarded.

Even if they have a 4 year degree in something or another...

Oh I believe it, hell I know my mom probably would.

In my opinion our education system is so messed up at this point that a 4 year degree really does not prove anything other than your willingness to get into debt at 18. Of course their exceptions depending on your degree, but I would suspect that that would be a somewhat accurate generalization of the majority of college students.

The users provide those holes for people to get into. I mean you wouldn't leave your back door open in the middle of the night, but unfortunately when it comes to the internet people do.
That set looks nothing like the Supreme Court.

It was ridiculous.

Russia is very unstable there which in a sense gives Putin some purpose to be an iron leader, but I think that stems from simply the size of Russia and its massively underdeveloped land. Another thing to consider is the Russian pschological dependence on strong, absolute leaders. Since Russia was created it has been ruled by men with complete authority or oppressive regimes, at this point Russia wants and needs that to exists. In that case I think Communism was oppressive not because it is designed to be, but because the Russians were imitating what they had lived under and experienced for hundreds of years. For a more liberal and democratic west this type of governance was seen as foreign and draconian.

Regardless I still would like to see less of a militaristic approach and more of an economic one. Though I suppose most of Putin's militaristic actions are all economically tied.

This brings me to another point. Will Russia collapse again in the coming years? Personally I think it is a possibility in the 2020's or maybe late 2010's. And not to go into this too much, but I think that Russia could be gobbled up by other powers. Turkey takes the South West, US takes the East and Siberia, EU or maybe a separate Eastern Europe takes Western Russia and Moscow, and Japan gets those islands it covets. At least that is my idea of what would happen if the country experienced a collapse similar if not worse than the Soviet one.

I just don't think the US would risk Russia rising again, or the Chinese/terrorists getting a hold of Russia's nukes.

I've been around for a long time. I worked for AoL as a moderator, for gods sake.

People..are stupid when it comes to technology, and the questions they are asked, and who asks them this. It hasn't changed. It was the case 20 years ago (when we had mobile mp3 players before "saint Jobs" "invented" the iPod and we had social networking before "saint curly hair, whatever his name is" invented facebook, or tumblr, or pick a site.

None of that makes either a "genius", and the fact the general public worships them is a matter of their own ignorance.

It all existed then. What those people did was make the unaware, aware. They were mass marketers.

They were, at best, PT Barrnum. They certainly were NOT the Wright Brothers. Jobs nor what's his face with facebook did nothing new. Get over it.

Of course, those who have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to technology will disagree, and I'll be happy to tell them to go back to internet kindergarten...

I have a few close friends who are in the old eastern bloc, who are quite upset about how we are handling their...politics.

Another politics/conspiracy writer you might enjoy is Robert Ludlum, he was the creator of the Bourne Series.
