The "Smell" of Disney

Hey all.

First I want to point out that this is not a nasty or perverse thread.:lookaroun

I wanted to ask if anyone ever had an experience in the Magic Kingdom of a weird um, smell..odor. That smells like popcorn, cotton candy, :slurp: chocolate and something else I can't locate.

For me I still remember that same smell since I was a young child at Disney.:sohappy: I had the opportunity to go to Disney each year since I was 2 years old..and go three times a year...so I know its not just a coinsidence that I and my twin sister recall this scent almost on each visit in the MK.

As a child it was mainly under Cinderellas castle and in the Passageway through Frontier land and Adventure land.

Just this month we were walking toward the Haunted Mansion, passing Liberty Square... near the waterway, and it was like a "wiff" being blown out. We imediatly stopped looked at each other and took a few steps back, to peer into some shrubbery.

Long story short....do you think Disney pumps this smell in. Of course, I'm not saying that its a "Happy" stimili, eventhough the smell always takes me back to my younger days.( And of course the sense of smell is always aquainted with your best memories) But you never know?

Hope I don't sound too crazy..just had to ask. Thanks guys.

I have heard from former castmembers that Disney pumps odors out into the park (in certain locations) like Popcorn so you'll get hungry and buy........Popcorn :)

My favorite smells of Disney are the Confectionary candy smell and the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor. On my last trip I also found a brand new favorite smell...the lobby at the Wilderness Lodge smells great. I know that sounds weird but it really does!!! Oh yeah, I almost forgot the smell in PhilharMagic during the Beauty and the Beast scene.

"America, spread your golden wings across the sky..."

I don't specifically remember WDW smells off the top of my head, but if I actually smell the same/similar smell I can tell you exactly where it's from at WDW. For example, recently I smelled the exact smell from the Pirates of the Caribbean queue. I couldn't have told you what that smelled like for the life of me off the top of my head, but I knew exactly what I was smelling.

It's very strange, actually...

Disney has a number of smells that are purposly pumped out, including Popcorn, Candy, baked goods (including pies), cinamon, and a few others.

For me, there is a distint combination of Desiel engines, steam trains, firework powder, and some other goodies that make disney great!

I know what you mean. I can't describe the smells but I definitely recognize them. I walked into a Circuit City a few weeks ago and the place smelled just like The Land. And the foodcourt at the Atlanta aquarium, where I was yesterday, smelled like The Land foodcourt. I've also had moments where I distinctly smelled PotC and Splash Mountain in weird places (both pretty similar smells based on the water in the attractions).

This is probably gonna sound bizzare, but one of the ones' I always notice is the musty, dank smell in POTC's queue........hopefully that's not one of the things that they got rid of during the rehab.

The smell of Disney water, which I think consists of :

  • chlorine
  • tar (or some other waterproofing)
  • and mold :lookaroun

Thanks guys!

Thanks guys for all your imput. At least now I know I'm not the only one which smells these 'unexplainable' scents at the park. Magic Kingdom definitly has alot of secrets, so I suppose its just another one to add to the list.

Can't wait to make more lasting memmories at Disney!

Talk to you guys later.
