Okay I know this is a longshot, but is there any refrence to the Scarecrow in any of the parks. Those of you with sharp eyes may have seen one. I have not.
I have just recently rediscovered the character, vaugly remembering it from childhood when Wonderful World broadcast it on Halloween while I was in the hospital one year. I could not have been more than 5 years old.
Anyone familiar with my posts knows that my family and I (by the way now one boy larger as of last week) are character hunters. I think the Scarecrow would be about the most random obscure Disney Character ever.
It would be a cool Halloween party addition, at least in the parade. (This may have given me another post idea). I have been told that there a literaly thousands of characters "roaming the character holding areas" ;) I wonder if the Scarecrow has a "spot" there.
Before all you bubble bursters pull out your needles, I know this is never going to happen but....it's the year of a million dreams right?

Okay, I haven't Googled this, it's all from memory (oy!), so, some parts may be wrong.

I'm pretty sure the three-part series premiered here in the U.S. as "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh," and was shown on the Disney show in the early-mid 60's. It starred Patrick McGoohan as a minister, Dr. Syn, and it took place in England just before the Revolutionary War. Dr. Syn would wear a costume of a scarecrow (a really cool one, too) and had two assistants who would also wear scary costumes. The three of them would try and right wrongs that government officials did against common people (or some noble thing like that). I think the series aired in England first as the full length film, "Dr. Syn."

The series here had a really neat opening theme song, and I can remember my friends and I as kids trying to recreate the scarecrow costumes.:sohappy:

As far as seeing anything at Disney World representing the Scarecrow, I don't think I have. Now you've go me curious...on our trip in May I'll have to keep my eyes open at the Studios and at some of the stores in Downtown Disney.

The Scarecrow is a English literary character created by Richard Thorndike. He is a similar character to Zorro/ Robin Hood in that he fights injustice. The premise was set in an England marsh where "The Crown" was forcing men into service. The good Dr. Syn a preacher, diguised himself as The Scarecrow to fight it. He has been referenced in a lot of pop culture the most notable being an omage in the "League of Extrodinary Gentlemen" graphic novels.
The story has been chronicled in film three times. Once by Disney, who aired the three hour movie in three one hour segments on the Disneyland show I believe in 65, and then re-aired them over the next 20 years. It was theatricly released in England with Sword and the Stone. He also now appears in a running cartoon in Disneys kids magazine.
That's who he is.

OK, thanks guys. I had never heard of this, but I did Google it after I read your descriptions. I think you're right, Greenlawler...this is probably about as obscure as you could get.

I think you may have inspired people to dress like the scarecrow for MNSSHP. It will be interesting to see if someone does dress like him and how many people will give blank stares.
