I was going through the channels tonight and one of my all time favorite comic book films was on, The Rocketeer. This is a great film, an excellent adaptation of the comic, and one of my top 5 comic book films.
I remember seeing this in the theatre in the summer of 1991 and being blown away. I started collecting the merchandise of the film, something to this day I still do, and began to track down the comic after that. I have the two graphic novels from the comic and am just missing one final issue.
I loved when they had the Bulldog Cafe ext. on the old Backlot tour. I have a picture of that I took. Today, all you can find is the rusted carcass of the Gee Bee and Auto Gyro, which is real sad, to me, these are rare film artifacts and should not be sitting in the hot Florida heat being battered by rain and sun.
I do love the refreshment stand with Peevey's name on though. They have the helmet and rocket pack there and every time I go to MGM I take a look at this.
Rocketeer is Disney's attempt at a comic book movie and is a great one at that. Sadly it didn't do what they had hoped money wise (it was up against Terminator 2 and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves). They actually signed the cast of for 3 films. I wonder what the sequels would have been like if they ever got to make them?
Are there any fellow Rocketeer comic or film fans here that would like to chat about it?
