The Rocketeer

I was going through the channels tonight and one of my all time favorite comic book films was on, The Rocketeer. This is a great film, an excellent adaptation of the comic, and one of my top 5 comic book films.

I remember seeing this in the theatre in the summer of 1991 and being blown away. I started collecting the merchandise of the film, something to this day I still do, and began to track down the comic after that. I have the two graphic novels from the comic and am just missing one final issue.

I loved when they had the Bulldog Cafe ext. on the old Backlot tour. I have a picture of that I took. Today, all you can find is the rusted carcass of the Gee Bee and Auto Gyro, which is real sad, to me, these are rare film artifacts and should not be sitting in the hot Florida heat being battered by rain and sun.

I do love the refreshment stand with Peevey's name on though. They have the helmet and rocket pack there and every time I go to MGM I take a look at this.

Rocketeer is Disney's attempt at a comic book movie and is a great one at that. Sadly it didn't do what they had hoped money wise (it was up against Terminator 2 and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves). They actually signed the cast of for 3 films. I wonder what the sequels would have been like if they ever got to make them?

Are there any fellow Rocketeer comic or film fans here that would like to chat about it?

This is such a tragically underrated movie. Not to mention it has an amazing musical score.

One problem with it though is that the girl who plays the rocketeer's girl friend gives a HORRENDOUS performance. Other than that, its an enjoyable flick.

You didn't like Jennifer Connelly's performance in it? I thought she was pretty good.

The score is great. You can still hear a part of it in Epcot when the fountain does that water show. It's the song when the Rocketeer does his first flight to save Malcolm at the air show. They cut the song down in Epcot, but it's still the song. Every time I'm there and I hear it I make my wife stop so we can listen to it.

I agree, this is sadly an underappreciated movie, both in terms of comic book films, it always seems to be forgotten, and in general a good movie. I hope one day it gets the recognition it deserves.

I love Rocketeer! Mobsters, Nazis, 40's stuff, a jet pack, and an awesomely cool Howard Huges!

THAT'S MY KIND OF DISNEY!
:D

Agreed with you on all accounts!

It's a shame they never got to make the sequels. I wonder what they would have been like.

Have you ever read the comics?

No, I'd like too though, but I thought that they weren't easy to find?

Yeah, I really want to see another Rocketeer movie. Or at least some Hot Topic merch.

Remember the MGM Rocketeer exhibit? I have loads of pictures of my family visiting it when I was a young'n. They had these great "Boardwalk" style photo ops where you could pretend you were pointing at him in the sky!
:D

Here's a picture of his "Blastmark" infront of GMR...

I was very upset when they took that away from the Backlout Tour. The first time I ever went to WDW I was 12 years old and when we went back when I was 21 I remembered that Cafe and that was one of the things I was looking forward to seeing. Much to my disappointment, it was no longer there.

I love The Rocketeer, such a great movie!

Awesome photo! I didn't see those photo ops back then, wish I did though, would love to have my picture taken with that.

Every so often new merchandise comes out, usually a pin here or there from Disney. A new one came out a month or two ago on the Disney website. I am surprised though Hot Topics hasn't sold any merchandise, t-shirts or what not, based off of the old comic books.

The comics are a bit hard to find, but you can find them pretty cheap on ebay. There's only about 7 comics, and you can buy them either as a set or as single issues. You can also get the trades if you are lucky, which has the series told in 2 books.

Milehighcomics.com has them on their site for sale, but I warn you, I bought some from them and while they said they were in good condition, one had severe water damage, the comic had obvious water damage, and had that musty, mold smell to it. I was very dissapointed in them for that.

I want to go back to MGM now and get my photo next to those footprints!

I'd like to see your other Rocketeer pics if you can post them.

I have a nice collection growing of Rocketeer items. I need to figure out how to post images of them.

The amount of new Rocketeer merchandise is few and far between. A few months ago the Disney website released a new pin (of the helmet) which I snatched up. Now, coming in July, is a 5 inch mini-statue of The Rocketeer. I just placed my order for it today at my local comic shop and put down a deposit on it. I can't wait for it to come so I can add it to my collection!

I remember the Rocketeer Museum at Disney/MGM years ago.

I wish I would have taken pictures in there because now it's just a faint memory.:(

I understand why they can only keep them up for a short amount of time, but I do wish there was someplace in MGM where they have these old exhibits of films. Like one of their massive soundstages or warehouses that aren't being used for filming, maybe they can set up a museum for past Disney films and can put the sets and props up from Rocketeer, Narnia, Santa Clause, all those cool films.
