Trip Report The passing the Disney Torch report! 11 days with Free Dining

A lot can change in a year, but it is awesome to see the things that stay the same.
We first took our son to Walt Disney World in 1998 when he was 3. Here he is 21 and on his 9th trip with us, taking his step son. He was married the beginning of the year and has made a wonderful father, as hard as it was for mom to adjust to the thought of her baby boy being all grown up.
With that, the players are Mom & dad. Disney She and Disney B, my amazing Disney Husband of 23 years of marriage.

Will be starting with tons of pics and details of a great trip tomorrow. Lots of rides, food, shows and the Backstage Magic Tour!

Like I said, it was HOT this day, so steamy wet, hot. It was an absolute relief to sit down to a cold drink!

I got the Backscratcher. It tasted really mild but looking back on it, maybe it wasn't. So I also ordered a Long Island Iced Tea. Probably an okay idea, unless you plan on checking out Trader Sam's and drinking a drink for two by yourself.

I had read about and was excited to see Trader Sam's. We got a buzzer and were one of the first 48, I think it is they let in. Very cool atmosphere. I loved it. I knew I wanted the Uh-Oa, but DH wanted the Beer flight. My thinking was, well it is just two drinks right?

And we angered it...

Great experience, one I would do again but maybe minus the first two drinks. I felt fine til I stood up, then it hit me. Nothing too major just giggly but I definitely felt it by the time we went up to eat at O'hana! I have a really cool mug too, cause of course, I had to have it too.

After here, we decided to try Fantasmic. For those that read last year's report, you will be familiar with my major disappointment, at missing Fantasmic. I complained for the first time in my life, there, not because it was cancelled but because it had completely quit raining for a good 20 minutes before they let us continue to sit there to cancel it at showtime. It just felt wrong, to me as I had seen Fantasmic, before in rain. Anyway, they more than made up for it, going above and beyond, by giving us no expiration admission tickets to DHS and the same Fantasmic dining package tickets we had. ( again, I want to stress, I am not a complainer, and I did not expect them to do this for us, but was happy to get the opportunity to try to see it again.) We got our tickets and decided since we got there before they were seating to have Tink and Jack spend some time together by riding ToT, with a posted wait of 15 minutes. Long story short, it was a lot longer. we decided to park the stroller and go in with the little guy, and let them come on in with their tickets. They did not make it, in time and it was a packed show. That broke my heart but my DS knew how much I wanted to see the show and was just glad I made it this year. Out of every show we did, it was enjoyed so much by Mater. he literally never moved from my lap, watching with great big eyes. :)

I LOVE this show!

We spent the morning and afternoon at Epcot, it was a slow day and Soarin' was 15 minutes for awhile midday. Test Track was about 30 but more like 25, even with the car design stuff. I like it better the old way, I miss the queue and the Crash Test Dummies and even the pre show. Still a great ride though. We spend a lot of time at Epcot, and somehow on this day, I hardly took any photos. Guess I was having too much fun, but here are a few.

Oh, the fun and confusion, of explaining that this is our Baby, to photopass photographers. It makes an old girl smile lol. He is so much stinking taller than his daddy even, never mind me! Will always, always, be my baby though. 17 years of Disney trips, all in my heart and mind. Hoping we have many more left. :)

I love these birds!

Such a shame...

Another Rabbit!

Then it was time to head to Boma. I used to love Boma, then we had a bad year in 09, and skipped it last trip. It was way better this time and I love Animal Kingdom Lodge. Going to stay there one day. After I stay at the Poly, my favorite resort. ;)

Little more AK time and dinner at Le Cellier, which I may have messed the days up on. I took a much more relaxed attitude towards things this trip, which meant I took 1200 pictures rather than 2500+ I usually do. I guess it may have been knowing that we were turning our tickets into annual passes, because I did not cry when we left, I smiled and waved, with a confident See Ya Real Soon attitude. Anyway on to AK.

We hit EE, Dinosaur, DH and I took in FotLK again, and later it was just me and my boys. We finally found the Asian Tiger! A big joke, because going in HOT weather, they are always snoozing, and one year we have video of the CM, calling out Asian Tiger, over and over. Just like the Lions, this year they were out! I have so many years of photos of DS standing in front of this sign, it is a must every trip. He may be grown, but geez, how cute is this "little fella" lol I still see a little boy grinning back at me. I guess I will, when he is 50.

Bat training.

Beware... The Asian Tiger...

Cause we always, always get shot by the canon pic. :)

I love my boys!

Dinner at Le Cellier is something we always do and always enjoy, even after it went to 2 credits, it was a must. Service, was not that great at all, almost thirsted to death, something we have never experienced. We actually had to ask another server for refills and by the time they brought it, we were all about to choke to death. Service has always been great here so I was baffled. The soup and breadsticks were great, as was the Ribeye and Filet, but what happened to the big mound of Risotto? There is hardly any now. Not worth 2 credits anymore in my opinion. Nice dessert touch again for anniversary though.

And before we head to the next post, about the Backstage Magic Tour, I have to show off my gift from DH, for our anniversary. I am not a person to spend money on a purse, but this one, I have eyed for awhile. I only carried it that night because I was afraid I would get it dirty, but Oh, does it make me smile!

Had a really busy weekend making a cake and cupcakes for a late birthday party for little fella, who turned 3 while we were there.
Ooooh, the claw!! They turned out pretty cute, I think.

But back to the tour! We wanted to do the Keys to the Kingdom tour and that was our original plan. I looked at the Backstage Magic tour and thought it looked very cool but such a big price jump, being first time Tour Takers, we were going to do it first then bump up next year to Backstage if we liked it, But... We kept forgetting to book it, and it sold out. :-/ I really, really wanted to do a tour and since it was late when we got back, and found out that KttK was sold out for all of remaining days, and we had to think about whether or not we wanted to spend that much, well of course, the Tour line shut down, and front desk said we would have to check in and buy tickets at Epcot. We so barely squeaked out making it there the next morning to last minute join. I am going to try to break the Tour down into parts below but will start off with a picture of the name tag/Lanyard you get at the beginning of the tour and the pin we recieved at the end of the tour. Pretty stinking cool!

So, we got our nametags and the Tour Guides, Julie and Kim welcomed us and everyone introduced themselves and we were off, on the bus for our first Backstage experience at Epcot. There was water on the bus to drink and lots of facts on the short ride to go back in. I was completely and totally mesmerized, even just at the roads, driving in. We pulled through and were in the back of Future World, near Test Track. There was a building with health care etc. for Cast, and so many trailers, and construction areas. I just never knew how close the backstage areas were to what we, as guests see. How is it possible that Test Track and Norway are that close? It takes so long to walk it in show area, but Julie said it takes 2 minutes backstage for a CM to walk from one to the other. The eye, backstage can see how close they are, but I could not figure out how you can't hear Test Track when in Norway. I mean, I could perfectly hear Fantasmic, enough to quote it as it went from Coronado Springs. That just amazed me! The other thing was the back of the American Adventure. I knew that it would not looked themed backstage, it would be a waste to do that, but it was so neat to see and hear how if it was visible from somewhere, the higher the buildings, etc, it would be themed and show ready until out of the guest's view. We had to wait a few seconds for someone to come let us in the back of American Adventure, once inside my eyes were so busy taking every little thing in, I probably missed out on a lot of details but we watched the ride progress towards us. DH can probably remember more than I can because I was that in a daze of being in a ride backstage! We went around the front of the attraction, to an empty World Showcase where, what amazed me was the trucks out checking on flowers etc. We did learn a lot of cool facts about the building, like how it actually had more floors than it looked, and how the opposite of Main Street was used in making it look smaller. I did not know that one of the F & W Festival Disney Visa lounges was held there. Really gotta start using those perks more! ;) The clock time period tidbit was something I already knew, as well as the flowers being red, white, blue to theme, but cool to hear it again. Back on the bus, and headed towards the Nursery (one of my highlights) and then a pitstop at AK.

So from here we were told we were going to a really special place. I had no idea you could see the Nursery/Tree farm in this tour, and I was excited! So much for the eyes to try to take in, on that ride in. I was so excited to see the Topiaries, to me that is just a thing, I always take pictures of them and donning our safety glasses and getting out and seeing so many staring back at me from previous trips and scrapbooks... Priceless! How many pictures, over the years, we have taken, in front of them, and here they all were! I cried, I am not going to lie. I knew they took a long time to make, but did not realize, exactly how long. 2 full greenhouses, of work, and for me, precious memories. This girl was happy, if a tad, emotional. Next we drove into AK, where again, I was blown away at what the backstage of FotLK looked like. It is so themed, that the warehouse look seems just crazy. We were shown the mirror that each CM sees, to be stage ready but I did not get taking us in to hear a Wild Africa Trek guide tell us about another tour? Not a complaint.. But an I don't get it.

We went into a service road right near ToT into Hollywood Studios. It was here I am assuming that was when we were supposed to go into backstage of ToT, don't know if we were running behind or not but we didn't get to go in just was told the "pickled sausage story" if you haven't heard about it there were a few animators back in the day that this jar of sausages was given to and it became a big joke that continued with CM over the years. It was given to a CM who then sat it down on his way out of the ToT queue and he forgot it, well the next morning when he went to retrieve it, the gluing crew had been and glued everything down including the jar of sausages. So, they left it there. I searched all over that queue to take a picture and could not find it! If someone could tell me where it is located, or even better, has a picture, I would greatly appreciate. As we drove towards costuming, you could see the Backlot Tour and Catastrophe Canyon is still there, for now. It was really neat to go in the costuming area rather than just see it from the windows like you did during the tour. The one thing that drew my attention the most, was there sure was a lot of pieces of Chewbacca fur being cut!!! Chewie meet and greet coming up with the whole new Launch Bay maybe? :) So much to take in one day that I can't remember if we ate before Central Shops or after. Lunch was at Whispering Canyon Cafe, a new one for us. What great fun! Our server MJ was great! I got in a bit of trouble for asking for ice water and she quickly pointed out she didn't offer me any but guessed ahe could bring me some anyway. The food was really good and we enjoyed the jokes and such. We have never been to the Wildnerness Lodge either so that was pretty cool. I wanted to ask if we could get a peek at River Country just being funny but didn't. Again, not sure if Central Shops was before or after but going with after. So, this actually excited me more than the Utilidors I think. We pull in and I saw the Christmas building! Man, did I ever want to go in there but we did not. I could see a lot of things both inside the building and outside. Looked like Christmas is being planned and worked on pretty hard. We got out of the bus and were headed in! The very first thing my eyes spotted was a Peter Pan's Flight boat. (The very first Disney ride I ever rode) We continued to walk along, trying to take in every detail. There was a freshly painted Carousel horse. So cool they use the originals and only put a fiberglass dummy horse in if they need to repair another. Space Mountain cars, Speedway, Buzz, Splash boats, Pooh Honeypots, PotC boats all were sitting out in the long stretch of space to see. There were many more I can't remember all. The coolest of the all, to me came at the end. The polar bear from Maelstrom is there! I liked that ride and not too keen on it being "Frozen" over, so it was just neat for me to see him again! Glad they kept him. We moved on into the paint area and were shown where the lockers are with all the different paints. Somethings were laid out to be worked on. I was literally craning my neck at every step trying to take in every detail and look in doors and windows just like a kid in a candy shop. We also saw a lot of signs, big and small that had been freshly made to go out, then it was time to head towards Magic Kingdom and visit the Utilidors!

We went in through the front gate to begin the tour at MK. We walked down Main Street and were told the stories of the different windows, which, of course, I already knew, but it was really cool hearing it again as we walked down Main Street. We stopped to go to the restrooms right past Casey's, and then when everyone was ready and quicker than I expected it, there we were going through a gate and headed back to the Utilidor Entrance. We walked through a lot backstage and towards a doorway, I remember you could take stairs or the elevator, we took the stairs. I really think that I could have taken more in, had we done the MK tour first. It just felt like I was trying to take in so much at once, that it was almost overload. I mean, I had read and looked up everything about the Utilidors and here I was standing in them. They pointed out the signs pointing out the land in each hallway/tunnel you were in and that the colors on the walls corresponding to each land. There was a lot of activity and Cast Members going back and forth some with carts. One of the coolest things, to me was the CM pin refill window. There were a couple of cast members getting their pins for the day as we passed by. Tons and tons of pins!! The frames on the wall were so cool, of every pin that there has been (Cast Member, I am assuming, but I was too in awe to remember) The pipes and trash collection systems were pointed out and the next thing I knew as quickly as we entered down those steps it seemed we were going back up them. One thing that I was most concerned about in doing the tours was seeing a friend without their head. May seem silly coming from a 40 something grown woman, but I did not want to see that. I thought okay, it is worth it to me to see the other stuff so much I will look away.. the Disney spirits were smiling on me and the only thing I encountered as we were going up the steps back out, was a very hot Snow White, in a tank top, shorts and flip flops, but hair and makeup intact. I could handle that, I mean Snow White can't always wear that big ole dress right? We hurried down Main Street to be ushered to an upfront spot for the Festival of Fantasy Parade. It was a really good spot but brutally hot! After it ended off we went, to board the bus and conclude our tour. For those that don't know, I didn't. I thought we could stay at MK if we wanted to but you have to get on the bus and exit the park. You do not have to leave but you do have to re-enter the park since being in the tour is what got you into the park and you did not have to have tickets. We had parked at Epcot, so we just rode the bus back there. It started raining on the way back, but we had our complimentary Ponchos, to don, that we were given before going in MK so that was okay. We were really glad to have just made it til the tour was over before getting soaked.
So bottom line, I really enjoyed the tour, it was more than we wanted to spend, but well worth it. The guides were great and I really felt like they relayed their love of Disney well. Both had the laid back, talkative and friendly Disney Cast Member faces and attitudes we love so much. The only drawback at all, is that I was so overwhelmed that I know I missed a lot of details/facts by being so excited and trying to make my brain take photos and record everything I was seeing. I would recommend taking it if you can and haven't. I may even do it again one day to enjoy it more.

The only other drawback in doing the longer tour was we missed our Coral Reef ressie! We always, always eat at Coral Reef. Jack, Tink and Towmater made it and said it was delicious as always. (Well, Jack did, since he was the only one out of the 3 that had eaten there) We stopped by the resort to dry off freshen up and they were resting so DH & I headed to DHS. We stopped at the Brown Derby Lounge where I decided to try the Derby Cosmo, it was STOUT! Good, but very alcoholy tasting. (not a word I know, but a Disneyshe word) I love the Cobb salad and since I get outvoted on eating here the past few trips, I ordered one minus the dressing of course.

We rode RnRC, ToT and Star Tours before heading out to go pick up Jack and Towmater to let him ride some rides at MK. The ride times were slow. We grabbed some food for Jack and little fella since Coral Reef was running out then we rode Buzz several times, VotLM, Mad Tea Party, Barnstormer, which was a big deal. He is only about about 35 and a half inches tall, so he missed out on a lot of rides. If he stands up straight he is bit taller, but hard to make a little one understand that. Anyway, he loved it! Too cute. After we got off that one Wishes was starting so we just stayed where we were, working a little towards Tomorrowland and he wanted to do Buzz again, we did and holy cow, even after hanging back, forever, the exit crowd was terrible. We opted for the ferry and it took forever. I say we waited an hour to just board. I am not used to that. The whole getting to MK is cool, until you are trying to leave with the masses, that is not so great lol.

We went back for a bit to DHS and I had to do VotLM with DS. He loved Ariel when he was 3 so this show always makes me cry. I don't think it will be here by the time we make it back together so I am glad we got it in this trip. I am excited for the new things coming but can't help but be sad to see some of the old things go. We went back to Epcot to eat at Chefs de France that evening. I honestly think the food there is just as good as Le Cellier now, especially to only be one credit.

After leaving there we decided to ride one of the bikes on the Boardwalk, something we had never done. The rest of the crew headed back to the resort so it was just DH & I. So much fun. Hot and a bit more of a hill a time or two than I had bargained for on a full stomach but so fun! We got the giggles about halfway through because I realized he was making me do all the peddling up said hills! I love that we did new things this trip. Speaking of new things... After we returned the bike, we decided we better upgrade those tickets to the beloved, long awaited annual passes! The CM that helped us was so nice and got very tickled at my excitement. And yes, I cried! It was a goofy selfie moment for sure!
image.jpg

We, of course had to use them to get in, and strolled around the World for a bit. We posed for photopass photos with them too. People were looking at us like we were nuts, but I did not care! 17 years of Disney trips and I am a passholder finally!
Next up our final full day and BoG dinner. As always, I will go back and add all the random photos I did not include after moving onto final thoughts and my favorite way to end a trip, posing for a throwback photo with my baby boy.

Last full day at the parks and I am going to be honest, I do not remember where we went first. Like I said, a lot of things were different this trip. It was a good thing in a lot of ways though because even when it was crowded, which it was on the weekends, the weekdays were dead, it felt more relaxed. I usually never watch an entire fireworks show, without trying to take a million pictures and I watched every show, several times this year without a single picture. I feel I enjoyed it more that way, like I was taking the time to watch rather than try to watch through a camera or video camera or cell phone screen. I know we went to DHS for awhile and I am thinking we hit AK again first. We had reservations at BoG at 4:00 and it was coming a monsoon when we arrived. I mean, we were soaked. Checking in was horrible in the rain, mostly because of people searching for a last minute ressie to get out of the rain I guess and do not even get me started on the people who will completely block your way in through Fantasyland from Liberty Square when it is raining, trying to avoid getting wet. It is just rain people, you will not melt.
Anyway, we were seated pretty quickly and it was pretty empty at least at first. I really love the food at lunch but it is always a bit crazy. Dinner is way better crowd wise. The food was great as was the service and love seeing the Beast walk around. Little Fella was terrified of him however.

The rain slacked up by the time we were done and we headed to CoP, mine & DS fave! It looked better than it did last year. The first 3 scenes seemed much better and smoother than last trip.

I don't know what it is about this that has me cracking up so bad, but I see Will Ferrell, as Anchorman for some reason. :)

We rode Buzz one more time then finally Philharmagic, which I had somehow not done yet. That is where I cried my last cry, for those counting, before we walked down Main Street one last time.

Everybody have their silly faces ready? Don't be sad it is over, be glad it happened!

The first walk I ever took down Main Street, I held the hand of my 3 year old boy as we stared in wonder at that Castle. I was a huge Disney fan before I even had him, but my love grew even more seeing it through his eyes. People ask me all the time, why Disney? Why don't you go somewhere different? Why do you stay so long when you go? I can answer that question with just a couple of pictures. Life changes, but the things that hold your heart, are always still the same. My son holds my heart, and we both have a huge love for Disney, to watch him pass that love down, and hear him tell his new family memories of our trips, that my friend, is priceless! You may see a grown up holding my hand, I see a 3 year old.

Oh my Lion pictures! That dude is always hiding behind a rock when I'm there. If it wasn't for pictures on this site I would be convinced he didn't exist.

I know what you mean! 1998 was our first Safari, just a few months after AK opened and 8 more long trips, 10 days each and we only ever got a glimpse of the head behind the rock! I was in awe! So beautiful, and I finally saw the Tigers awake too! Good trip. :)

We had gotten a DVC invite tour the Bungalows at the Poly and attend a Luau. We were going to but I wasn't so keen on DS driving all the way back home by himself. Yes, he is grown, but it just didn't set well with me, so we headed out and decided to stop at my other favorite home away from home. Georgia's Hidden Gem, Jekyll Island. After 11 days of go, go, go it felt pretty good! Thank you guys for reading! I lived through other people's trip reports in the almost 5 year gap between 2009 and 2014's visit. Ya'll kept me going lol! See ya again in January. :)

You totally just made me tear up when you were talking about your son. My son is 15 months old and we will be taking him next September for his first trip and I cannot wait to walk down Main Street holding his hand! I just hope that one day I will be able to do the same as you and take him every couple of years even when he is older. I loved your trip report and photos and especially hearing about your backstage tour experience. I plan on taking a more laid back approach for our next trip and just try to experience it through my son's eyes.

Enjoy and absorb every moment! It all passes by so much quicker than you realize. I had a really, really hard time dealing with my son leaving the nest so this trip was pretty special to me to see that even though he has his own grown up life now that we can still exchange just a look and smile and know we are both thinking about the same Disney memory. I was so thrilled he was able to go with me! I hope you have a wonderful trip with your son and that those memories will stay with you always just like mine did. :) Glad you enjoyed the report!
