Food for thought... going back to the drawing board, if the imagineers were going for "the Hollywood that never was" why did they choose the replicate an already existing theater. Why not build an entirely new art deco old timey Hollywood theater and then make it a Disney original. Get me an imagineer circa 1985!!!!!
I think the meaning of the 'Hollywood that never was' dedication wasn't that they were making a fictional Hollywood, but more a nod to anyone who complained it wasn't authentic - they know it was never accurately like that in real life, but it is meant to be a vision of Hollywood that people *think* they remember/did exist, a bit like Main Street USA, or Frontierland.
It's a nostalgic 'Hollywoodized' version of the golden age of movies, and something like the Chinese Theater is so iconic for that era that I guess they felt it would anchor the park in reality, ready for the Citizens and street shows to really make you feel like you were living through the golden age of cinema.
