Trip Report The Nightmare before Christmas.

Hi all, I recently returned from two weeks at Disneyworld (10/26-11/9). Now, two weeks might sound like a long time to many people but sadly it seemed shorter than a blink of an eye to me. I also spent two weeks here during the Christmas season last year (and in 2015) and this year I wanted to come a bit earlier in the year and catch some of the Halloween festivities, the Food and Wine festival and make good use of the annual pass I bought last year.

I began properly planning for the trip and even booked some accommodation in January/February while I was off work recovering from surgery for a thankfully small breast tumour, but both because I was travelling earlier in the year than I normally do and because my year had been so effected by my health it didn’t seem real that I was actually going to Disneyworld until I was on the plane.

I am a very slow trip reporter and will probably finish this in June 2019 but lets get underway!

The long haul to Orlando from Auckland.
I got off to a great start as I was upgraded to business class. Here are my feet sticking out the end of a pillow with my menu and cute eye mask they provided. There’s nothing better than being able to lie down on a long (12 hour) overnight flight.

Dinner was great. Here is my dessert of overly frozen nectarine ice cream and brandy snap with a dessert wine, followed by a cheese plate with port. I made good use of free flowing alcohol.

Yes, that is the Big Bang Theory I am watching. The show that everyone professes to hate but somehow is still well watched.

To break up the long trip from Auckland to Orlando I decided to spend a few days in Las Vegas. I enjoy Vegas and also like the direct flights available to Orlando on my favourite American airline: Southwest. The flight from LAX was very scenic.

IMG_0357.jpg

In Las Vegas I lost my gambling kitty, lost some additional money and then spent the rest of the time just checking out the strip as I didn’t want to lose anymore money!!! I stayed at the Park MGM a pretty mediocre hotel but it was only around $30 a night (excluding the annoying resort fees that all the hotels charge) and was in a good location. I had a view from my room of the back side of the New York New York Hotel and a stadium.

DSCF1020.jpg

One of the things I had wanted to do in Vegas was eat at Milk Bar, a dessert place that I had seen on the Netflix show Chef’s Table where they waxed lyrical about cereal milk flavoured soft serve. I tried some but sadly it tasted like ordinary, everyday vanilla soft serve. The cornflake crunch was salty, sweet and delicious though.
DSCF1063.jpg

I also went on a fun tour to the Valley of Fire state park. This is a great tour if you want a day trip from Vegas but don't want to spend hours and hours on a bus. This whet my appetite for more touring of the southwestern National parks in the future.

My flight to Orlando left at 4ish in the afternoon on Friday 26th of October but due to the time difference didn’t arrive until after midnight Orlando time. I then had a complete addle headed moment while waiting for my luggage. After half an hour of waiting for my bags to arrive and getting steadily more anxious I realised I was standing at the wrong carousel. When I finally went to the correct place most of my fellow passengers were long gone and a staff member had taken my bags off the carousel and put them to the side as another flights bags were arriving. My magical express was full when I got on and had obviously been sitting there a while so I consoled myself that even if I had gone to the correct carousel that I wouldn’t have gotten to the hotel any earlier. I finally made it to Coronado Springs at around 2am.

I had received a message earlier saying I was in Ranchos 6a one of the furthest buildings from the lobby and food court so I chanced my luck and asked if there were any rooms closer to the lobby. Luckily for me a lovely man found me a room in casitas 3, a short and very beautiful walk from the lobby.

Day 1
Today I slept in then headed by Uber to a late brunch (any later and it would have been lunch) at Ale & Compass in the Yacht Club. I was mostly here for the chocolate waffles: behold them in all their blurry glory.

DSCF1205 (1).jpg

I also got a few things from the buffet which at $23 a person (including the entree) is a Disney Bargain™.

DSCF1203.jpg

After breakfast I walked to Hollywood Studios. I looked wistfully towards where my old Yacht Club room was. How I wish I could stay here everytime in that exact room.

DSCF1206 (1).jpg

I can't make myself like these buildings no matter how hard I try.
DSCF1210.jpg

Some variety of bird.
DSCF1211.jpg

I took some obligatory construction shots: I can’t wait to ride the Skyliner, next trip will have to be at a Skyliner resort (unless of course people’s fears about burning to death and plummeting into alligator infested waters start coming true).

DSCF1215.jpg

DSCF1213.jpg

Also, I know the construction in the carpark/bus area is just temporary but it is a long and very ugly walk and should have been decorated better with at least some more posters and some of those plants in wheeled boxes to make it less ugly. After a long walk I finally see some sign of a theme park.

Once in Hollywood Studios I headed straight for Toy Story Land as I had a fastpass for A.S.S. Hi there Woody!

Slinky Dog was down and the land was slammed with people.

DSCF1228.jpg

I had a look around the land taking in the cute details.

DSCF1244.jpg

I like the land a lot more than others seem to and it is a lot better than I remember Hong Kong’s version being.

I like that these green army men have the same seams on their outfits that you can see in the toys scattered around the land.

DSCF1239.jpg

Unfortunately the A.S.S ride itself was boring as hell to me. I found it about as exciting as sitting in a chair.
DSCF1229.jpg
DSCF1235.jpg

After I finished in Toy Story Land I headed to the Tower of Terror. This was great as always.

DSCF1254.jpg
DSCF1253.jpg

For the first time in around thirteen years I rode Star Tours. I quickly realised why I stopped riding motion simulators- it was a jarring, nauseating horror show. I just looked at the ground and waited for it to be over. Shame as I really enjoy the queue.

DSCF1259.jpg

After this I spent a long time refreshing the app trying to get a fastpass for midway mania before giving up and heading back to the resort. Up next a tour around Coronado Springs.

When I returned to Coronado Springs I decided to do some exploration.

Fountain near my room, one of many around the resort.

DSCF1260.jpg

Another lovely fountain.

I don't like the concept art for the exterior of this tower but I love the rooms, lobby and restaurant and can't wait to see it.
DSCF1269.jpg

Lots of beautiful plants and flowers.
DSCF1273.jpg

DSCF1278.jpg

I love that this resort has completely different theming as you walk around the lake. Ranchos has more of a dessert vibe.
DSCF1281.jpg

DSCF1282 (1).jpg

Cabanas has a "beachside shack" vibe.

The food court was always quiet and fast but I wasn't too impressed with the actual food!

There was a movie under the stars happening which I watched for a little while before heading back to my room.
DSCF1329.jpg

I loved staying at Coronado Springs, the new rooms are beautiful with comfortable beds, the resort is stunning and if it was getting connected to the Skyline (or some other non-bus transportation) I don't think I would ever stay anywhere else.

Day 2
In the morning I headed to the Disney Outlets. This was pretty successful – I bought a couple of t-shirts and various presents for family and outfits for my niece who will be born in March. I also went to Disney Springs briefly.

Around 4pm I headed to the Magic Kingdom for the MNSSHP. Halloween is a very minor thing in my country, I have had one set of trick or treaters come to my house in my entire life, they weren’t wearing costumes and I didn’t have any candy (lollies as we call them here) to give them, but I let them pet my puppy instead and that made them happy. I was very curious about what it would be like and very keen to collect some free candy and see people’s costumes. As soon as I hopped on the bus and there was a mother and daughter both dressed as provincial Belle I knew I would have fun.

Mickey Pumpkin is so cute.

DSCF1339.jpg

One of the first things I did was head to the Haunted Mansion. This was the only usable photo of the Haunted Mansion I took all night as I was having major camera problems (which of course ended up being a user error not a camera error) which didn’t end until right at the end of the night when I gave up on trying to pick my own settings and just put it on auto!

DSCF1348.jpg

The mansion was deliciously creepy all night and the CMs were putting on their best creepy performances. I loved it. The party was almost worth it for the Haunted Mansion experience alone. I rode multiple times throughout the night and ended up being the very last guest to hop on a doom buggy.

I didn’t wait in any character lines but I saw these guys as I was exiting the Pooh Queue.
DSCF1358.jpg

Nothing Halloweeney about Little Mermaid but the low wait was fun and they were handing out candy in the exit which was convenient.
DSCF1362.jpg

I got a really late spot on Main Street to await the parade, one of the advantages of being a solo traveller. I didn’t take any photos of either parade both because of the camera issues and because I don’t know if I’ll ever see it again so I wanted to just enjoy it. I really loved all the beautiful , changing colours of the Main Street buildings while I waited. The parade itself was perfect, just wonderful. I watched the second parade from a bench in Liberty Square and that was even better.

DSCF1379.jpg

The rest of the photos are from the end of the party. I can’t remember the step by step of what I did but I had a great time, enjoying the two parades, castle show, lots of rides and just enjoying the beautiful colours and party atmosphere. A+++ would do again if I can convince myself to brave the heat and come back at this time of the year again!

Walt and Mickey approve of the beautiful colours.

Day 3 was spent at Epcot. It was a day of many touring mistakes. Mistake 1 was sleeping in after my late night at the Halloween party the previous night and arriving during the hottest part of a profoundly hot and busy day. I started with a ride on Spaceship Earth and had the longest fastpass wait I have ever had on this ride, much of which was spent in the sun. It was all worth it once I was on the ride. It is the best thing at Epcot for me.

DSCF1461.jpg

DSCF1462.jpg

My next fastpass was for Frozen and I had to rush as I had spent ages at Spaceship Earth and was technically late when I had arrived there in the first place. I quickly headed towards the France pavilion for my ride. About three steps away from France It hit me that Frozen was of course not in France, but in Norway! Mistake number 3 came when I decided it would be quicker to just keep walking around the World Showcase than it would be to backtrack. I eventually arrived at Frozen hot, sweaty, dehydrated and more than a little bit grumpy with myself.
DSCF1467.jpg

I don't know how I feel about the Frozen ride. Parts of it are stunning but there are so many blank and empty spaces that really take me out of the ride.

After this my plan was to just wander around the world showcase and sample the food and wine booths.

DSCF1480.jpg

I got as far as the China pavillion in my explorations before I became so hot and bothered that I decided to just eat at Nine Dragons. I wanted to sit in the cool and have some nice CMs bring me food rather than stand in the sun and eat off a rubbish bin! I expected it to be awful but I enjoyed it and stayed there for a long time enjoying the cold. The bao appetiser was very good, the chicken was less good but still nice.

IMG_0405.jpg

A lovely thing happened while I was there. An elderly veteran and his wife were eating at a table near me and a CM came up to them and said that the young family who had just exited the table beside them wanted to thank them for their sacrifice and had paid their bill for them. He was genuinely touched and thankful for the gesture and kept saying to his wife "thats so kind, isnt it wonderful". I thought it was a lovely thing to do and made even lovelier that they just did it without staying around looking to be thanked.

The rest of my Epcot experience will be in the next post.

Enjoying your report!

Thanks for reading!
I think you need to correct your dates. :cautious:
Upon first glance I thought our trips had overlapped. 😉
Thanks! I tried so hard to make sure my dates were in the back to front (to me ) American format but then I went and put the wrong months!!
I wish our trips had overlapped. I Would have loved to bump into the trip report queen!

Hi Kiwi!
Great to have you back with a new TR

I am glad the surgery earlier in the year went well

I like the land a lot more than others seem to and it is a lot better than I remember Hong Kong’s version being.
I am going over Christmas to see the WDW TSL - compare and contrast with HK and Paris for sure

I hope you did at least one character meet with Donald - it usually the only time we get to see you!!

Following along

Max

Thanks Max and I am very glad to (touch wood) to have that all behind me now.
I ended up meeting my very favourite Donald Duck, Mexico Donald at Coronado Springs and at Epcot but the phots are pretty horrendous so I don't think I'll post them
You will soon be one of the world's premier experts on Toy Story Lands! None of the other lands have a ride half as good as Slinky Dog though, so that gives a lot of points to Orlando.

I continued my tour around the world showcase for a bit. It continued to be very hot and I was really surprised at how much hotter it was at the end of October than my usual visit time at the end of November/December. I don't know if it was just hotter than normal this year or if that few weeks difference really makes that much difference to the comfort levels, but either way I was really feeling it.

DSCF1483.jpg

Such a cute name and sign for a shop. I was imagining a German saying the name in the clipped german accent and it made me laugh!
DSCF1484.jpg

I considered some gelato in Italy but the line was too long so I gave up but I also had in my mind another place that I could get a creamy, cold treat.
DSCF1486.jpg

DSCF1493.jpg

Once I made it to the International gateway I headed out of Epcot with a plan to walk towards Ample Hills, however there was a boat waiting and very few people in line so I hopped on that instead. On the way I saw the mural on the Skyliner station which is beautiful, I look forward to seeing it getting closer and closer to me as I head towards it in my gondola.

DSCF1497.jpg

The boat ride was lovely, it was cooling down and there was a nice breeze and great views of my favourite resort area. I enjoyed my Ample Hills outside, enjoying the respite from the heat. I had strawberry and some other flavour (thats some great trip reporting there!).

I saw a cute turtle swimming around and enjoyed watching the sun going down.

Its a shame about the ugly triangle building but I love the style of everything else and the atmosphere of the area.

After watching a a magic show I walked around to the Yacht Club and headed back to Coronado Springs in an Uber.
