Also keep in mind, unlike Gift Cards, only about 40% of the Disney Dollars purchased get redeemed for merchandise. Most Guest like to save and collect them as souvenirs. With that kind of return, there is no reason to stop printing Disney Dollars any time soon.

I always felt this was one of Disney's most brilliant marketing schemes. I know DH and I have Disney Dollars collected from previous trips, while Disney has our real dollars.

Can you buy these giftcards online or by calling? Or are they strictly sold in the parks?

Starting May 1st, the Disney Gift Cards will be available to purchase in person at select merchandise locations at the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort, as well as at Disney Store locations across the country. They will be available by phone, mail or internet through disneyshopping.com. As of now the card will not be able to be purchased by phone through the any of the Disney Reservation Centers (WDW, DL or DCL) or on board the Disney Cruise Ships.

Hope this helps! :sohappy:

To add to all of this, I would like to inform everyone that these gift cards are also good for purchases of Pleasure Island single club and multi club tickets. I'm not sure if they are good toward the 5 day extensions on the tickets as well, but it only makes sense that they would be. :king:

Oh... and happy 200th post to me. :p

I was in the NYC World of Disney store today trying to buy Disney Dollars for my upcoming trip and went to guest services to buy them. They told me that they no longer carried the Disney Dollars and that they instead had the gift cards. They said they weren't getting any more Disney Dollars in and that I most likely wouldnt be able to get them anywhere else as they were "moving away" from the use of Disney Dollars.

I spoke to someone in guest services about 3 weeks ago and they said because the disney stores were no longer owned by disney it is up to them whether or not they will have the disney dollars.
I went to disneyshopping.com and it says that the cards are still unavailable-- I wonder for how much longer since I wanted to purchase one for my mom for mother's day-- we are going shortly there after.

Yup, I just saw that... I was going to try and buy a card in spite of the international shipping restrictions (sometimes Canada isn't considered "international" for shipping purposes... :lookaroun ) because the Canadian dollar is doing phenominally well today!!!

The cards were available last night - anyone know what happened in the interim?

Disney Dollars are pieces of currency printed by the Walt Disney Company, and are accepted as cash at U.S. Disney Theme Parks and Disney Stores. Here's a link to a page all about them: http://www.willcad.org/disney_dollars.html

I actually really like the idea of an all-encompassing Disney gift card. It was really cumbersome to explain to guests that the Disney Store gift card could be used in-store only, while Disney Dollars could be used at the parks. Now, either choice will work anywhere (except for Disney Dollars online).

its interesting to see that you would be able to use it at The Disney Store...seeing that its Childrens Place...and a HORRID place to work.

What your missing hear is that Disney Dollers are easy to counterfit, and so they are moving toward the more secure gift card, just like most major companies.

Well I'd rather receive disney dollars than a gift card. The dollars seemed to be more personal and fun. Gift cards are so boring.

This wouldn't apply to the NYC World of Disney store since it is still owned by disney and not the children's place. It is so sad to see the dollars go, I loved getting them for gifts for the kids because they understand that it is money.
