The "Never Again in July - nunca mais em julho" Disneymoon Trip Report

7.7.12 - Our Wedding day went well, actually very well. It rained all morning and to our luck it stopped an hour and a half before our ceremony and the weather was perfect; reminiscent of a fall day in New England... a tad on the cloudy side, cool with no humidity. This IS not part of the TR but I figured some people were interested... so I wanted to share. I'm sure everyone is interested in what I look like, so bam... here's a couple quickies. The rest of the TR is coming... soon!

The best trip ever, and with the crowds and tour groups 11 days was money and we needed every bit of it.

7.8: Our wedding night was a long one, the reception wrapped up around midnight, and after party went to 4AM in our suite with friends and family. So, we were a tad hungover on Sunday and basically just threw a bunch of clothes in our luggage. This was our first long trip and coming in at 11 days total I actually needed to think about what to pack, how many things I actually needed since I am so used to shorter 5 or 6 day trips. Needless to say, I was beyond excited... as was my wife. We knew what was ahead of us, had everything ready to go, and barely slept that night as we were so excited.

7.9: Up bright and early at 5AM, we always try to fly out as early as possible so we can max out our day down at the World. Breaking from our awful tradition of shoveling a greasy McDonald's sandwich at Logan, I woke up a little earlier and made us some eggs with toast and juice. I actually liked having the lighter start to my day and will likely avoid airport food at all costs.

We landed at MCO around noon, quickly picked up our bags and ran off to the DME. For our first time we were in the Poly line. I was beyond excited. The Polynesian is one of those resorts that we always visited, and admired but weren't sure when, or if, we would ever stay there. As I'm sure everyone knows the rack rates in the Poly are pretty steep, but thanks to some AAA and AP discounts we were able to make this happen for two nights of our ten night stay.

Upon arriving at the Polynesian we simply knew we were home, stepping off the bus we were smacked with the humidity. Oddly enough, it felt great. It's something we just don't really get here in New England. I have to say this is when the magic began and Disney really showed their true class. Upon checking in we received handmade lei's (unlike the party supply store versions they give their normal guests) and exchanged them in a traditional Hawaiian fashion. They were simply beautiful, it was rather touching. Below is Rachel (the wife) and her handmade Lei, along with some of the many buttons we rocked this trip.

Again, Disney started to shine once again... we had a few bags and bell services was quick to aid us. Back to my previous note about the overall cost of Poly, you can imagine what room I booked... the cheapest in the house. The bell service loaded up a golf cart and took us off, showing us the pool and where miscellaneous items were throughout the resort. Then he starts the small talk, the history lesson and the bomb... "oh, your room has a beautiful view". At this point being a Bostonian and all, I thought the guy was giving me a hard time. I let it slide until we got to our room, Tahiti 2020... WHAT! Without being told we were upgraded to a theme park view, I couldn't believe it. The room itself was no great shakes, although well themed, but looking out into the balcony and having Cinderella's Castle (dead center) and Space to the right was downright amazing. It was beyond peaceful, sitting there... watching the boats pass by and seeing the castle off in the distance. I was speechless at points. I figured Disney saw our stay was short and decided to throw us that perk with the upgrade. I have no idea how much the room went for normally but I'm assuming it's big dollar signs.

I have to say that a lot of people gave us crap when they found out we were honeymooning in Disney. Well, let me tell you and everyone who is thinking about a Disneymoon... DO IT! The amount of perks and treatments we received were downright amazing. Disney already had a direct pipeline to my wallet but now that pipeline is simply solidified.

We were told this is an exclusive sparkling wine for the Disney resorts, it was actually very nice.

Congrats!

Were you mauled by the bazillions of Brazilians?

Continuing on from my previous post on 7.9: the Brazillllllians

I know this is a controversial topic here, and that many threads end up getting locked, members being told their ignorant or prejudicial. I must admit, when I would read threads I often said "yeah, how bad could they really be?" Well, let me tell you something... they are downright AWFUL.

Once we soaked in the view, the room upgrade, the complimentary bottle of Disney exclusive champagne we changed our shoes, freshened up, and ran right into the MK. I mean, we were on a monorail resort! Although, we simple walked from the Tahiti building over to TTC, it was much quicker. We followed tradition, entered the MK to the right and went immediately to Adventureland and POTC. I immediately saw the yellow shirts, the flags, the blue shirts, again the flags. I knew we were in trouble. We're in line for POTC (and I must admit the crowds are too much in July) and the chanting began. POTC is one of those attractions where everything gets you into the mood, the music, the smell... and then it was all ruined by a ratpack of Brazilians chanting and banging on the wall, followed by screaming during the ride and about 200000 flash photos. All of this happened within the first 30 mins of being inside MK and our first ride of the day. I was NOT a happy camper. I spent all of this money to have to deal with these kids for 11 long days. We came across groups from Paraguay and Argentina and guess what, they were fine... it was the Brazilians who were chanting, linking arms at night so you couldn't cross, essentially groping each other. CM after CM chatted with me about how they felt Disney brass needed to do something about the groups, along with them admitting their loss figures (stolen goods) is the highest when the groups are in the park.

I ended up meeting a travel agent who books many of these tour groups. She said the same thing about how Disney loses thousands of dollars from all the items the groups steal in the shops. She said they now only allow so many in one shop at a time. However, it pales in comparison with the millions they make off of them.

We went on Pirates once, and it was enough. It just wasn't worth it. The flashes and chanting. It kills the ride experience.

Congrats to you and your bride!!!! We LOVE the Poly! We normally go to Disney in the Fall (once or twice in June) so never had to deal with tour groups much. After reading TRs regarding said tour groups, I'm lucky I never ran into this.. Congrats again!

7.9 (continued): We had to have a Casey's dog for lunch, they are actually really good. I have to admit, I've been hard on Disney when it comes to dining. I'm lucky to have grown up in a major American city, we have some of the best food in the world here. But, this trip actually changed my mind a bit.

We had ADR's for O'hana and I have to admit, outstanding! Some of the food items were better than others, but everything was edible. I especially enjoyed the wings and the shrimp, by the end of the night I consumed (I counted) 37 grilled shrimp. Needless to say, it was a great first experience for us and I was a little confused by the many negative reviews I've read on the place. Only downside, the Wishes view from O'hana is not all it is cracked up to be, despite having a "good" table to view. I would have preferred watching from the beach outside.

Overall, a pretty amazing first day. Despite all of the crap with the tour groups I took some time to reflect and clear my mind. I was now a married man, and the feeling was great.

Edit: unfortunately the camera really stayed in the bag most of this trip, I had a hard time justifying its use. I shoot so much during the year, since I have my own company, that vacation became vacation. With this in mind, I snapped away some stuff on my iphone and apologize for the overall poor quality this tool creates. But, on a positive note I shot a few rolls on 120 (MF) film in my Mamiya and will drop this off to my lab today for processing. Hopefully a few slides will be keepers from the rolls. I'll scan and share as soon as they are ready.

here is the tool I used for the 11 days, although I didn't shoot as many rolls as I had intended.

I also wanted to take a second to thank a few people; Missy from KK was simply unreal. I never thought, as a massive planner, I'd use a travel agent but I can't say how awesome they were. They took the time to find me the best discounts since I had a few options with AP rates and AAA. Again, they are a great service!

and I have to thank them for the amazing gift set they had waiting for us at the Poly, the snacks came in handy on those late nights!

Congratulations! Love your Ellie Badge! :D

We honeymooned at Disney in 2009 and didn't really get a ton of crap for it...except for my cousin/maid of honor. "Oh, Disney? That's...unique." And by her tone I took "unique" to mean "stupid." Oh well, she just doesn't know any better. Love the report so far!

Thankfully I have never had to deal with the tour groups. We have heard enough horror stories to steer clear of July (for a variety of reasons, not just tour groups.)

7.10: In true Disney fashion, I was awake at like 6AM... I never sleep on vacation. Waking up in the Poly is a nice feeling, I took a small walk around the property while the wife slept. Beautiful, period. Since we were on the loop there was no question, MK day. We made our way on the early side, we had an 8:30 Keys to the Kingdom Tour.

Key's to the Kingdom Tour:

As someone who has read a bit on Walt and his history, I found the first 45 minutes of the tour to be real dry and repetitive. The history of Walt and Marceline was something I already knew, but the wife certainly enjoyed it. The rest of the tour was OUTSTANDING! We rode the Jungle Cruise, toured and learned a few things, had lunch, then rode HM and finished the tour in the Utilidor. I have to say that I read reviews that stated they were only in the Utilidors for a very brief time; unless they modified the tour this is not true... we were inside for at least an hour. We went as far as seeing the CM lunch room, random but still fun. Our tour guide was Rae, unsure if you can request a certain CM but she was outstanding and even got emotional when she went into why she works at Disney and what it means to her. I found it touching, really did.

Florida is hot, Jesus... it's hot. 93F and 90% humidity. We had a great day inside MK, made sure to snag a few FP's and rode our favorites.

Something we went with (again) was the Photopass, this time we went for the new plus feature. It is a steep price at 200 dollars, but given our length of stay it was worth it to us that we got all of the ride photos. I'm going to review the photos this evening but I believe we ended up with:

6 Space Mountains
4 Splash
4 Tower of Terror
2 Everest
1 Dinosaur

Which if my math is correct: 323 dollars in ride photos give or take a few bucks. My wife and I love ride photos and this was a great feature for us, we always buy one but then end up bummed when we take an even better picture later but don't want to fork over another 20 bucks for an 8X10.

We ended up heading back to our resort around 5:30 to wash up and get ready for dinner; The California Grill.

I must admit, I was really looking forward to this dinner. Check in went very smoothly on the first floor, we then rode the elevator up to the 15th floor. Upon arriving I felt at home, my wife and I like to frequent similar styled restaurants at home in Boston. The floor plan is beautiful and features an open, presentation kitchen for guests to view. You really see how an effective team works, head chef and sous chef checking on preparation. We were visited by the head chef, welcomed and congratulated on our recent wedding. We reviewed the wine list and I was impressed that my wife had been to many of the listed vineyards on a recent trip to Napa. We had a few glasses and started the meal off on a positive note; I suggest the Cline Cashmere... a really smooth blend from Napa. We then enjoyed a Korean chicken flat bread, of which I ate most as it was a tad on the spicy side. Rachel had a the california roll for her entree; she admitted it was some of the best sushi she had and the crab was plentiful and fresh. On to my meal, maybe the highlight of my stay... Columbia River Wild Salmon on a bed of a pea risotto. Beyond delicious, well prepared and cooked a perfect medium. This is one of the nicest pieces of salmon I have ever had prepared in a restaurant and was completely blown away. In honeymoon fashion (again, the perks are amazing) we were treated with complimentary champagne.

We had an 8:30 PM reservation and wrapped up the meal with enough time to secure a nice spot on the walkway to view Wishes from the roof. I must admit, this is a place you want to view Wishes from. Unsure if its open to the GP or just patrons of the restaurant but get here if you can!

Yes, never again... we figured we wanted the traditional honeymoon right after the wedding... we feared if we waited we might not go at all since she's a teacher and time off is tough. We usually go in March and will stay in March from here on out... it was an experience for sure, but never again in July.

Congrats man and welcome back! The polynesian sounds amazing. One of these days we will stay there!

We disneymooned as well and heard the same junk you had to listen too. I just ignore it and drift off thinking about the world.. Some get it, some don't. I'm just glad I married one that does!
