The Miscellaneous Thought Thread

From what I gather Kodak was the last to end due to Bankruptcy in December 2012. Sunkist ended in 1989. A few others ended between those dates.

Ah, I forgot about them. They at least still had those little kiosks, like on the Small World Mall, right?

(I had never really thought about the details until my acquaintance mentioned working at Disneyland, yet getting a pay check from Sunkist.)

I think it was John Hench (or was it Rolly Crump?) who told the story of Walt coming to visit the WED work room in 1965 where the Disneyland facade for Small World was being worked on, led by Mary Blair, while the ride itself was still operating at the World's Fair. Some lesser Imagineer had put a tray of fake trees on the roof of the model for convenience as they were placing trees and landscaping around the model while Mary Blair fussed over the actual building, and Walt saw it and loved the look. He thought it provided a good sense of depth to have greenery on the roof framing the modern wall of world icons and architecture.

The Imagineers had to pretend they had planned it that way all along! Mature trees were placed in big planter boxes and put onto the south end of the roof for its 1966 opening at the park. "Glad you liked our tree idea, Walt!" 🤣

Rolly Crump, as told in his book.

Dole for the Tiki Room.

Arribas Brothers is a third party operating two shops in the park.

I'm sure there's more.
There's a Pandora shop in New Orleans Square. Starbucks is on Main Street USA. Red Rose Tavern, Troubadour Tavern, Main Street Fruit Cart, and The Spirit of Refreshment and Refreshment corner all hosted by Minute Maid, Dreyer's, Cuties, and Coca-Cola respectively. Cuties, Dreyers, and Coca-Cola also sponsor dining at DCA. Also at DCA you have Ghiradelli and Boudin, both in Pacific Wharf.

Obviously very few sponsors for actual attractions, but a good bit of food related sponsors within the parks.

I'm actually a little surprised Disneyland has so few attraction sponsors nowadays; I remember when Siemens sponsored IASW not too long ago.

Off the top of my head, I'll add that Guerlain sponsors the parfumerie in NOS, Enterprise sponsors Luigi's Rollicking Roadsters, and Huggies sponsors the baby care centers in both parks.

Maybe I'm just unobservant, maybe they really have been making strides in maintenance, but I saw a lot of little effects working on attractions that I had never seen before. Some of them were of course broken the next day, but it was nice to see them.
I really do think they've been making somewhat of a concerted effort (I think partly tied to rumors that Mazloum will take over as Chairman), but it feels like a game of whack a mole.

The best food I had this trip was all leftover from Lunar New Year, which definitely makes me want to go back next year for the full experience.
LNY was actually mildly disappointing for me this year, but it's still easily my favorite festival in DCA's line-up food-wise and entertainment-wise.

Speaking of: Lamplight Lounge has a cringe theme, but it has a really nice outdoor patio, and both of the meals I've had here recently (got the Chilaquiles for brunch over Christmas and the Chef's Special Mongolian Beef this time around) were real standouts.
I'm curious, what about LL's theme is cringe to you? The food is invariably very good here at least. 😂

Wondrous Journeys remains an S-Tier fireworks show. Paint the Night I enjoy but is wearing on me a bit. Still haven't seen the 70th WOC.
Happiness probably ranks as my third-favorite after the original and Season of Light. One of the better iterations of the WoC formula, especially compared to Celebrate and One.

Glad you had a good trip overall!

Maybe the reason they haven't brought back the People Mover is that no tire company is willing to sponsor the attraction.
Given that the Rocket Rods retrofit removed all the tires, and the PM in MK uses linear motors, I can't imagine they'd bring back the tires if they brought back PM to DL. So maybe they can get Southern Edison to sponsor it instead. ;)

My Dads cousin owns a tire shop. I’ll give him a call. Whatever it takes.

Not sure People Mover: sponsored by El Cajon Tire Pro’s has the best ring to it though.

Disney should capitalize on F1 fever by bringing in Pirelli as the tire manufacturer, just so F1 fans can come in and complain about the hard tires and that Disney needs to switch to the softs for better speed.

This is a joke for maybe 2 people but I'm making it anyway.

Only if we can get Sonny asking for the softs over the speakers, "Plan C!".

Part of it is probably just a leftover bitter taste from the Pixar Pier makeover more generally, but from time to time people will debate whether or not something is decorated or themed, and to me, LL is what I think of when I think of a place being more on the decor side of things.

It just comes off like a tacky homage to a company I really did used to love and root for (trying to make the Pixar Ball and its colors an icon also does a lot to mildly irritate me). Nothing Pixar related is actually additive to the restaurant experience; instead, the restaurant should take its cues from its own outdoor seating area-a nice atmospheric place to decompress over a nice meal that wouldn't necessarily be out of place at a genuine traditional park-and go all in on that.

I'd like it a lot more if they just let it be a nice boardwalk restaurant without all of the tacky Pixar decor intruding on the vibes.

Ah, yes. Romanticizing an old B Ticket attraction added in a panic after a Billion dollar theme park failed in the marketplace.

What better way to celebrate 70 years than by sharing the Resort's old failures and removals!

What's next, a hazy-romantic photo of the Pog exhibit in Tomorrowland in 1995?

A Light Magic tribute?

Luigi's Flying Tires deflated beach ball auction for charity?
It really shows how far gone Disney is that something as poorly done as Bugs Land, which was a bad carnival from the early 2000s, has more appeal than whatever the heck they tried to do with Avengers Campus.

I will say, at least we had shade and greenery (and something for kids in a Disney park). But again Disney chose to rip out Bugs Land 10 years ago and now sells tickets to a private event to do photo ops honoring it.

It's like if a murderer was running a tribute event for their victim,

Kind of off topic, but a few pages back I was asking about airports in the area and getting from the area to DC came up. I'm also headed to DC for the day, so kind of on the brain.

I recommend considering BWI if you are coming to DC. For several reasons...

1. I've shared that you can go via San Diego, Ontario, or LAX to BWI non-stop via Southwest, and sometimes Long Beach. Super convenient. Your other option is United out of LAX non stop. Southwest tends to run cheaper, as low as $170 one way before bags. BWI is a super nice airport. It's not too big but is very modern and has enough options for shopping and food.
2. Dulles is the other major airport in the region. Horrible. Hate it. And your option is basically United out of LAX.
3. I do NOT recommend Reagan National. American Airlines is the option out of there, and the accident that happened last year because it's so close to the army base is not the first.
4. If you're concerned about the Baltimore area, BWI is not actually in Baltimore; it's in Anne Arundel County. Area is safe, and should you have an issue, there's hotels in the area.
5. To get to DC, as long as you don't have a bunch of luggage, take the bus to the Amtrack station, then take the MARC train to Union station. It's $8 each way. There is an Amtrack train, but it's pricier. Alternatively, use a shuttle service or Uber to your hotel. It will likely be more than utilizing Dulles or National, but traffic around BWI is WAYYY less than Dulles. Your major issue will be 295 traffic in DC. I take the MARC train from this station; I don't drive because of the stupid traffic.

Speaking of driving... don't drive here. I don't care that y'all have driven in LA. DC traffic is worse. And we drive like lunatics. I came over and wondered what the fuss was all about with LA.

If you ever decide you want to go up to Baltimore to catch an Orioles game (or Ravens; stadiums are smack next to one another) from DC...super easy. From Union Station, catch the MARC train up to Camden Station (not Penn). It's right there. That area of the city is safe, as is the Inner Harbor during the day (National Aquarium), Fells Point, and Fort McHenry. Take Uber or Lyft within Baltimore; unlike DC, do NOT use public transit other than the MARC train.

Thank you for listening to my musings while I'm bored on a train.
