The Miscellaneous Thought Thread

Yeah, I can say “you’re wrong” to suggest there’s any sort of karma as though NBC chooses the location or something, when they really just want to get the most value out of their deal which runs through 2032. I try not to give stupidity any more attention than it deserves because it’s a bad rabbit hole.

Oh, I have no ill will towards NBC. I like their programming in general. But they paid over $7 Billion for Olympics broadcasting rights through 2032 and now the ratings have collapsed. Which is why I said "mercifully", and meant it, regarding NBC...

The joyless Winter Olympics in repressive Communist China have mercifully ended for NBC.

If you have a fondness for Communist China, love the propaganda they spewed via the Olympics, and think the 2 million Uighurs held in concentration camps are just there to learn a trade and buff up on their Mandarin grammar, then so be it. You can even quote us from Mao's little red book, if that's your scene.

But I am not a fan of Communist China and think they're an evil empire enslaving millions in 2022. I thought the Diplomatic Boycott the US and many other freedom-loving governments took against these Beijing Olympics were a good step, but there's a lot more to do to counter Communist China. But that's just me. :)

So you can understand how I chuckled to myself when I saw stories like this...

He insinuated that the ratings were due to the location by mentioning “beautiful karma.”

Yes, I found it beautifully karma filled myself. I have no idea what caused tens of millions of other Americans to not tune in compared to previous winter Olympics. Even the last Winter Olympics in South Korea in 2018 where they had the same time-zone problems in broadcasting, but they still got tens of millions more to watch.

But for me personally? Fewer people tuning in the propaganda of the Chinese Communist Politburu for this Olympics is nothing but beautiful karma. I do not like Communist China and what they do to humans. But if you're a fan of their work, I hope you watched and that you buy lots of products from the sponsors. They need the help. :)

That's what you do. You present articles and data and then you interpret them. I've never once seen any of you counter his interpretations with your own data or citations. I've also never seen him make a claim without sourcing something. So I'm not exactly sure what he's doing wrong. If you have a counter argument and have sources to back them up, present them. That's how debate works. You don't get to just say "Your wrong" and leave it at that. I see this way too much on this board.

Thank you. I was puzzled over that myself. It's nice when someone reminds me I'm not insane. 🤣

Next up... The Oscars!

Went to DCA yesterday for a half-day visit! Some miscellaneous thoughts:
  • Genie+ will be the end of me. We opted not to get it as we decided early on in the day we were leaving at like 1 or 2, but already by 9am there were multiple rides pushing an hour or more.

I need to put this in the Genie+ forum, but I was talking to my sister on the phone this weekend and the phone got handed to a friend who is planning an April trip to Disneyland. She was completely baffled by Genie+ and all the other stuff that goes with it now. She'd been to Disneyland several times, but is now bringing the grandkids.

I had to confess I was just as clueless as she was, but I helped a tiny bit I think.

She is a smart lady, married to a very successful man, and they are savvy and well educated people. They were baffled by how to take the grandkids to Disneyland for two days! They've turned a Disneyland visit into a complete mess of arcane rules and endless upcharges and limitations and App-based research. TDA should be ashamed of themselves.
  • Saw the Country Bears doing meet and greets in Grizzly Peak! Was surprised they had Big Al and Wendell meeting; they met in an area between Soarin' and Redwood Creek. Seemed like not a lot of folks were meeting with them, which is a shame; they don't appear on the map for Characters and that Grizzly Peak area is in a very quiet place (especially since GRR is down for refurbishment) so it's very easy to miss them.

It's so weird, and yet I'm not complaining, about how they still cling to the Country Bears as characters. Their show closed in Anaheim over 20 years ago, and it didn't even happen in DCA. And yet, they routinely trot those guys out to wander around Grizzly Peak.

I guess because they fit thematically ("still fits, sort of"). But it just seems like an open admission that Paul Pressler made a giant mistake by yanking them out of Critter Country 20 years ago. He was an idiot.

I always thought they should have moved the show to Grizzly Peak and built a new theater in the side of the mountain underneath the flume ride structure. But that would require some cash, and Disney is so strapped.

I hear the "add the Country Bears to Grizzly Peak" idea suggested a lot. I think it'd be a good idea.

Incidentally, I think the Country Bears have done meet-and-greets in Disneyland Paris as well, and they never had a Country Bear Jamboree.

It speaks to what a useless waste of space Grizzly Peak is. It's a giant mound with one (1) ride on it. And that one (1) ride is a water thrill ride that drenches you with a 40 inch height requirement, so it automatically eliminates a few customer demographics even on a hot summer day. But from December through March that ride is either closed, or it's too cold to get drenched.

It was a very stupid decision to build that part of the park like they did. Grizzly Peak should have been slightly taller to help block sightlines, and then they would have had more space and topography to add a mine train ride winding around the flumes and hillsides, with a Bear theater in the base of the mountain accessed by a bear cave off to one side.

That way, you'd have used that same piece of property smack dab in the middle of the park and gotten two rides and an animatronic show out of basically the same space. Sadly, the Burbank execs of that late 1990's era were almost as clueless and cheap and visionless as Bob Chapek is today. :(

Surely you’re joking. That was literally his entire point.

That was exactly my point why I, me, TP2000 did not watch the Olympics.

Our US government and many other governments officially boycotted these Olympics by not sending a diplomatic corps. I boycotted these Olympics by not watching. I have no idea what the reasons were behind the tens of millions of other Americans who also did not watch over the course of the past two weeks.

But the collapse in viewership and interest from Americans for these Olympics makes me smile. :)

Here's some good news about the Olympics though... In six years they'll be held right here in the good 'ol USA! Where there's freedom of the press and freedom of expression, and the athletes will be able to Tweet and Instagram and whatever the App is in '28 to their hearts content without Communist censors looming overhead!

When the Olympics were last in LA in 1984, Disneyland got in the spirit of it all and had a little patriotic parade that featured "The Olympic Spirit". It was cute.

Disneyland also had "OIympic Spirit Weekends" where they gave out prizes and free tickets to guests. Here's one of the free tickets you could win, just after the A to E ticket system was abolished the year earlier and a "Disneyland Passport" was still a very novel idea! (Not including shooting gallery)

What will the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics bring to Disneyland I wonder?!?

I thought our freedums were taken away by American Nazis and communists, starting in 2020?

Well, no. We still have freedom of expression and the press and religion and all sorts of freedoms China refuses to grant its own citizens. Unlike a Chinese citizen, we can even access Instagram and Twitter! :D

So the freedums are still there then?

I’ve been led to think differently.

Oh, I get it. You're talking about mask mandates.

You may still wear a mask for the rest of your natural life, even though you are vaccinated. Don't show your face or emote or have any human connection in public ever again, if that's your scene. You are free to do that here.

Is that a yes or a no?

I'm confused. Is the question whether or not Los Angeles is still a part of the United States and thus Olympic athletes attending the '28 games will be able to access the internet, attend church, say out loud that Taiwan is a country, criticize their own governments, etc? If that's the question, then yes.

It's funny you say that actually, because shortly after I posted that I received a survey from Disney Research about my DCA trip and among their (many) questions were ones related to the reservation system, Genie+, and crowd perceptions. Gave them a piece of my mind. 😂

I've never seen CBJ and have no emotional attachment whatsoever to the Country Bear characters; to be honest, I find them rather ugly. I do like the sentiment in having them meeting for those who remember them, though, which is why I was delighted to see them in the park.

How about the freedom to vote and choose our own leaders ? Will that be there in 2028? Lol
