Trip Report The May Trip That Would Have Been!

The Trip That Would Have Been-

A Magical Trip with the Parents, to the beach and a 4 Day Disney stay for us. May 3-9th beach and May 9-13 Disney.

I should be packed and ready to have another amazing split beach and Disney trip just hours away. Instead, I have spent the last months like everyone else. Stuck at home endless days upon days, occupying myself baking -which has made me fluffier than usual and making masks and planting veggies for a garden. I have spells where I swear I have been so depressed, I cannot breathe. That just makes me end up feeling guilty. My husband and son’s jobs are safe and even though they have been home more, both still get paid the same regardless. We are very lucky and I should not get depressed, knowing so many have lost their jobs and are struggling. We are all healthy thus far and blessed, but I cannot help but miss my Happy Place. Heck, if it was just open and we decided to wait it would be better somehow.

But enough with all the blues. I am going to live on the what could have beens to keep me sane for awhile.

I also hope all my Disney friends and family are safe. I know that I am not the only person probably, waxing poetic, and sad over a trip that should have happened but did not.

If there is one place that draws me almost as much as Walt Disney World it would be Georgia’s hidden gem- Jekyll Island.

I first visited there as a little girl of 6 or 7 with my parents. It is so peaceful, quiet and serene and has mostly remained as I remember it from childhood. We usually go to Disney first then spend time there to unwind and rest after going nonstop like lunatics but this trip we were taking my parents and B’s Mom so Jekyll was first.

We would have first stopped at the local Winn Dixie for groceries and of course went into Brunswick for fresh Sweet Georgia Brown Shrimp off the boats. There isn’t a better shrimp, IMO. Not even a Key West Pink can top them. We use the small kitchen to cook and utilize the outside grills. Unlike a Disney part of a vacation, this is just pure staying at and on the beach all day, I make lunch and take in a cooler- Then for dinner we cook some pretty awesome meals for what we have to prep and eat on our balcony overlooking the ocean. Sometimes we order a pizza too. ;)

I would have taken a really crappy pic of the Jekyll sign.

Sprayed the room down, being my germaphobic self, then headed straight to the beach. An empty beach!

Of course, I had to stick my toes in the surf!

Is there anything sweeter than *new* feet? That super baby soft skin that lasts until about 5-6 years old?

It is so funny how things differ in different states and regions. I always loved raw peanuts too, then quit eating them a few years ago when I read they can cause health problems if eaten raw. Now my fix is boiled peanuts, which I always loved too. I don’t like roasted peanuts at all. I will warn you they are a bit messy though. ;)
I am so cracking up right now!! It's almost like this was meant to be......

One of the guys just brought me this mispick. We were not supposed to get this. See the tag on it--we ordered Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing & they picked the wrong item at the warehouse & we got this instead!! Fate??

That is too funny and has to be fate! 😂 Add a little crushed red pepper if you wanna spice them up a little.

Since this is a hypothetical Covid canceled trip, I am going to include some older memories too.

Me with the first fish I ever caught at the beach. A tiny shark that didn’t bother as much as the bigger ones.

I'm really loving reading about your trip that wasn't meant to be. I think all true Disney fans are feeling very similar to the way that you're feeling so don't feel bad about it. We were suppose to be at WDW 5/5-5/12 staying at the Boardwalk Villas. :( Like you, I'm so grateful that my husband and two daughters still have jobs and we're all healthy but it doesn't mean I don't feel bad about everything that has happened. :( We first experienced boiled peanuts on our trip to Charleston and loved them! I can't get over the amount of sharks that swim the waters around Jekyll Island! We don't live far from the NJ beaches and although I know there must be sharks out there, we don't see them all that often being caught by the fishermen!

Thanks and I am so sorry you had a trip you had to cancel too. 😔

The sharks there always blow my mind. He catches one right after the other. He got one that he couldn’t get in, it finally broke the line, but not before he had it on a sandbar for a bit and it was well over 4 feet! I got so nervous after that and one evening we were walking in the surf at dark and so stepped on a big flounder or a ray and I literally was back on dry sand in 2 seconds! 😂

We probably would have ordered a couple of pizzas after I replenished my Southern reads at The Jekyll Market. (It would be the only time we left)

After I checked in on my kitties, Nala would have been hiding, but Roxie and Zuma would be glad to see their brother there checking on them and posed for me. Cookie, my stray kitty I have taken in still won’t let us touch her but sure she would have given a thankful kitty smile for the food.

We would have left Jekyll super early to make sure we beat the Jacksonville and Orlando traffic.

And shortly after Sunrise, we would be here.

Lunch for me would have been boiled peanuts, and a salad or a deviled ham sandwich.

Probably sandwiches and boiled peanuts for the parents.

Plenty of Guacamole, for B, (made fresh by me, but I am anti Avocado) with chips and a beer or two. View attachment 467857

We would have headed back to make dinner, but of course, snapped a silly selfie, with our Jekyll Visors on.View attachment 467859

Dinner would look about like this, night one. With extra beer boiled shrimp on the side!View attachment 467862

boiled peanuts - I really tried to like these, but I cant handle the texture, its roasted for me!
deviled ham sandwich - Perfect!
guacamole - I like it.
beer - OF COURSE
dinner - WOW Excellent!

An excellent start to your virtual TR so Far!!!

Day 2 -

B would have gotten up early to fish. I probably would have bailed on greeting the sunshine due to staying up too late reading on the balcony.

We would have had breakfast then I would have packed and loaded the cooler with our lunch.

Lots of beach walking early then I would be parked here-

Until I was a nice toasty brown.

Getting up just to see what B’s catches for the day were when he reeled them in.

And I would begin judging how far I go into the surf after witnessing the catches. Knowing Mama Shark has to be pretty close!

Jekyll’s water in the surf is root beer colored and cloudy due to the rich River soil that washes up so you can’t hardly see a thing in the water where it breaks. Day one I am on a boogie board riding waves and going out pretty far. The catching of sharks always abruptly brings that to an end. 😳

SHARK!!!! Cool! Yes, best to play it safe and stay our of the water....

The peanuts today, were a shot too big and too grown. It was a frozen bag, B got at our local grocery. Definitely not real boiled peanuts.

But moving back to the trip that would have been.
Would have been very special to me to walk on a beach with my Mom. That was their thing when I was little. I have been to so many beaches- at an age, so young, I don’t remember the first time I saw the ocean. This would have been the first trip back with my Mom since I was a pre-teen. :(

One of the things I remember so clearly about Jekyll, was Sand Dollars, that and it being so empty and beautiful. Oak trees, on the beach, at the resort dripping with Spanish Moss. White dunes with sea grass, oats, whatever it is called. It sits undisturbed, for the most part, a peaceful getaway, so different from ,say -Myrtle Beach- the place so so many people flock to. (And I have always despised)

We would have checked out the driftwood,View attachment 468079

enjoyed an empty beach at the end of the day- View attachment 468080View attachment 468081

but not before a Mickey being drawn in the sand, by B and checking in on Squirt.
View attachment 468078
View attachment 468083

Then off to cook a way too amazing meal for what we had to do it with- and a night of kicked back watching the fishing boats come in on the balcony.

By sun down Day two, my husband would have looked very much like a lobster. View attachment 468086

Mmmmm barbecue steak dinner!!! These meals get better and better!!

Since we got there early and since I can pretend- not only did we get to check in immediately but we were lucky enough to get another crazy upgrade to a King Jr. Suite like we did in September 2018!!!!

And this time I would not think I had went into the wrong room but I would still bawl like a baby, thankful for the free upgrade. ;)

After unloading, we would hit the bus stop ready to hit our first park!

I messed up the multi quote (Imagine that? I always do)
Your beach photos look so beautiful and serene! Yay, so glad you've arrived at WDW!;)
It really is that serene. I love that beach so much! And yay, so glad to be here. ;) (Thanks for following along and playing along- it’s giving me much needed Pixie Dust) :)

I used to have a big Magnolia in my yard, before we moved about 12 years ago. Hubby hates the leaves falling and has not let me plant one again. :( That top one, I have never seen before, what kind of Magnolia is it? So pretty! (They both are)

The top one is called Magnolia Stellata. I bought it as no more than a twig a few years ago and it is thriving even in our strange English weather.
We nearly moved house a couple of years ago, but it fell through, and I'm glad as I would have had to leave my trees. 😍

My fingers are crossed for all my favourite trip reporters to be able to return to Disney soon. I do so love following along. 🤞🏻

So the park we would have went to first would be DHS. Why? Because other than taking the Grandbaby- I switched things up to get used to going without my kids. MK was always first, and last park. It made it easier for me to change traditions.

Also, when we decided to go in May, it was only going to be for a few days and I have 4 one day tickets that do not expire to DHS.

I had bumped the couple of days up to 5. 🤪

We also avoided Galaxy’s Edge like the plague or Corona, whichever you wanna use... when it opened our last trip in August. We hoped by now, it might have been a tad less crowded.

Rides would have been TSM, ToT, and RnRC as must dos day one. I don’t remember at this point what FP that I had. But we always do these day one, even if we might have to wait a bit. If we don’t we hit the last two over and over. I am sure we would have gotten there early enough to do that this trip too.

On a bus, maybe- or maybe we would have driven to the park- a bus photo, just in case.

This is sounding like the perfect check-in day for sure!!! It's so rare that your room is ready when you arrive these days so it's so fun to be able to make your own fantasy trip go smoothly! :) We always have to to TSM and TOT but I make my DH do RNRC on the single rider line these days because it has started to make my brain feel bruised afterwards.

We have been insanely lucky at checking in around 7:00 am at Coronado. The year we got bumped to a king Jr suite, we got there around 6:30-6:45 am. I almost passed out. If we get there after 7:00 am, we have to wait.
