Am the the only one who thinks that the Marx Brothers are pretty much the greatest comedy act to hit Broadway/Film? C'mon, who's with me? Eh, eh? *nudge nudge*

Okay, seriously, I thought this board has been forever devoid of a tribute to a few of the funniest men ever born. Thus, I have devised to plan to discuss in this small thread their antics that shall be forever remembered by their fans.

Agreed!!!!!! I LOVE the Marx Brothers! Especially Groucho! The first time I saw him was reruns of his tv game show...what was that called? You Bet Your Life? I can't remember....but that show was AWESOME!
Those guys are completely under-appreciated!

I love the Marx Brothers.
Each one a star in his own right.

Harpo was an amazing harpist.
Chico a brilliant pianist.
And together with Groucho, the three made some of the funniest films ever.

My comedy hero for a long time has been Harpo. That silent gentle slapstick comedy is amazing. A group of guys I am friends with has the habit of grabbing someone's hand and propping their leg in it. It's amazing to watch, because most people have no clue what's going on.

I've seen many of the old "classic" comedy movies and shorts from the early days of film. None of them, outside of the Marx Brothers, make me laugh. Their brilliant combination of clever wordplay, goofy characters, witty dialogue, and farcical situations are head and shoulders above their peers. It wasn't until Blazing Saddles came out that a movie was made matching the number of laughs in a typical Marx Brothers movie.

I had an avatar of Groucho for a couple of months, and own a fair number of their movies on DVD. I even watched Duck Soup five times in one day when I worked at a video store. They used to show old Marx Brothers movies on WWOR or WPIX, one of those stations from New York on Saturday nights if I remember correctly. We got those two channels on our cable in Massachusetts when I was growing up. My parents and I watched them almost every week that they were on.

Chico had some very clever dialogue. His piano playing was incredible to watch. I really wish I could use my fingers in the same fashion and fancy as he.

I've actually never even seen a picture of Gummo and Zeppo was really never heard so much as he was seen. I can see why he dropped out of the act later on.

Gummo was only ever in the early stage acts, but never had any ambition to be a performer. Zeppo appeared as the straight romantic part in the early films, but left to be an agent.

From what I have read, off camera Zeppo he was a very funny man.

I own a copy of the book "Harpo Speaks" which was the autobiography of Harpo Marx. It's really pretty cool, at least what I've read. I really should go back and finish it. One funny thing, Harpo never made it out of second grade and he left his classroom in second grade through the window... not by choice.

Another funny thing is that he could not play a correctly tuned harp. It had to be miss-tuned to match his techinque.
