Production for the new film begins in 2024. More details below.

"The Mandalorian and Grogu are embarking on a new adventure — to movie theaters.

Directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian & Grogu will go into production in 2024.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

"Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen," added Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm."

Odd Tuesday in January announcement? Feels like a rush job to me.
I'm guessing maybe it was rushed based on how all the Rey film announcements have gone over. It was probably a, hey, let's get something out there to try and get the Rey movie out of the spotlight.

That said, if you were planning on announcing a return to the theaters with star wars. I would have personally lead with this. It's a safe bet with kids, adults, fans for or against last Jedi... It will be interesting to see how they use their $350mil plus budget. :cautious:

Though the Filoni-directed Star Wars film is still happening.

Another release I read seemed to suggest this is separate from the Filoni film, which is still in development.
Could be, but this shows that Favreau is not only at the helm of one of the projects, but also involved in the backend with Filoni. Meaning that even if Filoni is doing a separate movie still that Favreau will be right there with him.

Either way should give a bit more reassurance for anyone concerned about Filoni directing if that is still indeed happening.

I’m not sure. This still reaffirms the Rey film is a go, as is Mangold’s film. Nothing mentioned about the Rian Johnson films, despite constant reassurances from him and others that they’re not cancelled.

I don't think that is the official title, just a description. But even if it is the real title for now, it can always be changed later.
Its the official title. It could be changed, but it makes sense based on the series' title. You can't just call it 'The Mandalorian: The Movie'. It also puts Grogu into the title, and lets face it, he's the actual star of the series when you're talking about the general public.

Essentially I think this is S4 and would lead into the Filoni 'wrap up' movie along with Ahsoka S2 and any other loose ends they want to put in.

No, I said get it out of the spotlight. Not it's not going to happen. This is a good way to make more positive headlines. All the Rey film stuff has been not so positive. A mando film should be much more universally approved of.

As far as Rian goes, at this point he's just playing the uber troll. He knows yapping about him making his trilogy will make all the last Jedi haters mad.

It just seems more like a working title to me. But even if the official title it can always be modified or changed later, that was my point.

As yeah it'll probably be just S4 of Mando, but bigger.
