This can't be happening. A few months ago Al Lutz said this event would happen on June 22nd, and Al Lutz is never right. Or at least only right like a broken clock is right twice per day. How can this actually be happening?

Yeah, this doesn't look good. They've got a brilliantly Imagineered recreation of Los Angeles in the golden age of Hollywood, complete with grand movie palace at the end of the street. But they ignore that and instead dress the place up like a Sadie Hawkins dance at a junior high school. So predictable, and yet so tacky.

I just wish there were some Western-themed land where the Lone Ranger premiere would have made sense...

Oh well, the silver lining is... can you imagine if someone told you five years ago that Disney was going to hold a big Hollywood movie premiere at DLR and they would eschew Disneyland proper to hold their fancy party in the "parking lot"?

Hard to believe what fixed the "parking lot" was more cars. ;)

Just a quick note on these premieres... I've been to both of the pirates ones.

The first one was $1500 per ticket. We had no idea what to expect, and there were hardly any of us "common folk" there. The movie setup was small, at least relatively. But for that $1500 per ticket, we walked the red carpet, were surrounded by celebs all night, had incredible food for dinner, had as much snack food as we wanted for the movie (water, soda, popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream, churros) and then afterward that whole half of the park was open for us till 2 AM, along with a few booths where they would take your picture and photoshop you into the movie poster with the stars. On the way out, we each received a gift bag that had at LEAST $300 worth of stuff in it. The biggest item was a Nintendo DS and the PoTC game, but there was other stuff in it that all added up.

The second premiere was $1000. It felt different right away. There were a lot more "common folk" there. Not nearly as many celebs. The movie setup was HUGE. The whole area felt crowded. The food was still good, but not the same. They still offered popcorn and soda for the movie. After the movie, Pirates and HM was open... Can't recall about Pooh. No photo booths. NO GIFT BAGS. I believe it was only open till 1.

Now with this premiere, the tickets look to be $1000, but you would be in a completely separate theatre from the stars... Part of the fun was watching the first Pirates sitting literally right next to Lauren Holly and in front of Apollo Ohno, and the second one we were about 50 feet from Depp the whole time. That would all be gone if the "common folk" are going to be in the Muppet Theatre. And the food for this one is Subway. Seriously?!?!?!? Having Carsland and WoC open is cool, but it closes at 12. That will give everyone at MOST an hour and a half for both, because these movies don't start on time. They wait for Depp to get there, and he always runs late.

My point is... The experience has greatly watered down from the first one, and it looks obvious that it's getting watered down even further for this one. I'm just glad I was able to be at the first two, and I'll go ahead and keep my money this time around.

Now... If there's another Pirates premiere...:D

@Buried20KLeague , that first Pirates premiere sounds awesome! Another example where if Disney offers something new, you need to do it right away.

Awesome doesn't even BEGIN to describe it. Wanna hear a cool story?

So as I mentioned, there weren't many "common folk" at the first premiere. Lots of big wigs. So after the movie ended at like 10:15, they had that whole half of the park still open just for the premiere people... But virtually NO ONE stayed, because they were only there for the premiere and didn't care about the park. So my wife and I were in heaven. Almost literally. Riding every ride over and over, no having to get off even. We rode pirates, and I think there must have been 8 or 9 boats between us and the next people. But that's when something very cool happened.

We decided to go on Haunted Mansion. We walked right in, obviously, and were standing in the foyer. Completely alone. It was cool to be able to listen to everything in such detail, with the room deathly (ha) quiet. We were all excited that we were going to do the whole thing (stretching room and all) completely alone. Then a family came walking in, and I was bummed because it ruined the experience... Till the person got close enough for me to see. It was John Lasseter and his family. We exchanged pleasantries, and went back to focusing on the attraction. We moved into the stretching room, and stood next to them... AND HE SPENT THE WHOLE TIME SMILING LIKE A LITTLE KID. It was great to see. On a night when almost literally EVERYONE left as soon as the movie was over, he and his family were there at 1AM, still riding rides and obviously having a blast. He gained a lot of respect from me that night.

But that moment MADE the night for us. To ride a classic Disney attraction literally 3 feet away from the closest thing there is currently to Walt??? Just awesome.

Plus there was all the other cool moments. Hanging out with Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks. Standing in line next to Tony Baxter and walking the red carpet next to him. Using a urinal next to Martin Landeau (SERIOUSLY). And that's just to name a few.

It was clear that kind of thing wasn't going to happen at the second premiere. It was much more crowded and felt more like a normal evening at the park with a movie thrown in. Nobody of his stature stuck around afterward. Everyone ducked out as fast as they could, and there were only 2 or 3 attractions open, and there were lines. The whole thing had a different feel. Much less "special".

To give you an idea, my wife was EXTATIC when we got the chance to go to the second one after the fun we had at the first... But when I just told her about this one, without even telling her about the separate theatre and the Subway, she said "eh. no thanks".

Today (Sunday 6/23) they had a free screening of the movie for AP holders in the Muppet theater. There were 2 showings (noon and 4PM.)

It was nice seeing the movie more than a week before it comes out. They also gave everyone a Lone Ranger button and mask, which was a nice touch.

The spoiler free review is it's basically Pirates 2 and 3 as a western. Notice I said 2 and 3, not the first one.
