The Little Mermaid is kind of... weird.

So I just started watching The Little Mermaid after not having seen it for at least 10 years. I never noticed that she is only 16 years old - a little young to get married, no? Also, she goes through all of these things, tells her father "I LOVE HIM!" and is basically making deals with the devil after she saw Eric once - and he was unconscious. Does anyone else find any of this odd?

I read a LM story book to a friend's toddler the other day and thought the same thing! It's worse in those books - they boil it down to a few key points (kind of like you did) and it's pretty disturbing!!!

But darn it, it's still such a good movie once you get past that ;)

Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty is in the same boat. She is about to turn 16, meets Prince Phillip ONE time and knows for certain he is her true love. And then you have Pocahontas, the one princess who is supposed to look like a teenager based on historical accuracy, and what does Disney do...turn her into a 25-yr-old woman.

What about The Lion King? Baby lion is told that when his dad dies, he will be king, then runs around singing a song that he JUST CAN'T WAIT to be KING? That song irks the tar out of me.

Tiana is actually my favorite princess. She's one of the few that's got it together. :D

I think we can all agree Alice in Wonderland and Pinocchio are the oddest ones of them all. I even think I have to explain Alice. A hookah smoking caterpillar? A cat that freakishly disappears, the mad tea party in general, marching cards, dog faced flowers, etc. Pinocchio is quite scary. A talking puppet, little boys turning into donkeys, whale attacks, a little boy locked up in a bird cage. Those two films definitely take the cake. And their attraction counterparts are a little scary. Well Pinocchio that is.

Tiana didn't fall in love immediately. Jasmine and Aladdin didn't get married until the third film. Same for Mulan and Shang, they took their time. They're not all weird.

Actually I've never noticed this. I always thought Aladdin got married at the end. I've never seen the sequels for Milan and I haven't seen that movie in years.

Really? Yep, in the the Prince of Thieves they finally tie the knot. They actually sing about waiting to marry in a song called "Out of Thin Air". It's a great song. I actually haven't seen the second Mulan either. I just know she and Shang get married haha.

When you consider the time period that these books were written in, I don't think it was too far off of realistic for young ladies to get married at those ages.....and for royalty, for princesses to be betrothed to a prince from a neighboring kingdom having had little or not contact with them.

But... she's not a princess who was betrothed. She saw him once and was madly in love, to the point she didn't mind making a deal with a witch who wanted her voice. I mean, it's a great movie, and I realize kids don't notice that stuff, but watching it as an adult is interesting. And yes, I agree that during that time period it was more likely for people to get married at 16.
