Trip Report The 'lets go back and do everything we didn't get a chance to do on honeymoon' trip report

Hi guys,

We have just come back from a 10 night stay in Walt Disney World and I've decided to do a trip report to combat some of those inevitable disney blues!

My husband (Gideon) and myself (Amy) went to Disney World last year (March 2013) for our honeymoon (back before I discovered these forums) and had an amazing time, but the post wedding and post disney blues on our return were just too much for us so we decided last summer that we needed to come back and do everything we never got around too the first time (along with everything we did again!)

For our honeymoon we stayed in All Star Sports and loved it- we are from the UK so trips cost a fair amount for us (because of the airfare) so we were happy to go value for our honeymoon (especially after all those wedding expenses!) as long as it meant we could be at disney! We loved All Star Sports and were quite happy to go back there- but when we booked they had 40% off rooms at Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa for UK guests along with free dining and it worked out around the same price to stay there instead with what we would normally have had to save on top for food so we treated ourselves to a little luxury and went for it!

As the time of our departure drew nearer our excitement got hard to control... My colleagues were counting down the days at work (Until they could finally stop having to listen to me talk about Disney world) and I spent all my free time browsing these forums and reading disney blogs so that we knew everything we wanted to do and had planned everything!

The day of our departure finally arrived, May 31st 2014. We had driven to Gatwick airport the night before and stayed in a hotel overnight as our flight was at 11:15 the next day, so we were fresh faced and ready to go! Our flight ended up being about 45minutes delayed- but 8 and a half hours later we landed at MCO, sped through security (no queue!! What were the chances?!?) and made our way to the Magical Express. The bus was waiting for us when we arrived, and after a few stop off's at other resorts we at last arrived at the beautiful Saratoga Springs!

image.jpg

(Please excuse my photos- they are not good quality- I was too excited running round disney world to actually stop and make my pictures look decent.)

Check in was really easy, we were given our lovely magic bands (they don't ship internationally so we had to wait until arrival). We paid for a deluxe studio- but upon arrival were assigned a one bedroom villa! The disney magic truly was at work already! No complaints from us, as we had a friend (Liz) coming to stay later in the holiday for 3 nights so more room was very welcome!)

image.jpg

Fabulous carousel pony in the check in area!

We were then transported over to our room on a golf buggy and given lots of useful tips from the bellman (lovely guy- wish i'd got his name, he was super helpful). We opened the door to our apartment, stepped inside and WOW! IT WAS INCREDIBLE!

Bathroom area (Jacuzzi tub!)

Fab sofa (ruined by our rucksacks!)

Biggest, most comfortable bed EVER!

And... A balcony with the view of the water!!
image.jpg

image.jpg

It was so much nicer than anywhere we have ever stayed in before- but it didn't feel grand or like we didn't belong there. It was a very relaxed, peaceful and unassuming resort. I had read a lot of negative comments about Saratoga Springs before we arrived, but we truely had a magical stay and I would recommend it to anyone. The Magic is not lost here- its just suited to different tastes!

image.jpg

Outside of our building!

By the time we had got from the airport to SSR, checked in and settled down into our room it was about 7:30pm so we headed over to downtown disney on one of the boats from the resort (so quick and easy) and had a wander around (i'll expand more on our views of downtown disney in another post) before our 8:30pm reservation at Planet Hollywood.

By the time we made it into Planet Hollywood, the effects of the long day of travelling were starting to get to me, so we had a quick meal (Texas tostadas and a cobb salad for me) (buffalo tenders and a pulled pork sandwich for Gid) and then bussed it back to SSR for a good sleep because

THE NEXT DAY WAS MY BIRTHDAAAAAAAY!

Aww great TR so far!! Loving the Magical Upgrade!! One day I have to convince the husband to splurge....but with two little ones we love the Values mostly because they do!

Thanks! We love the values too... I think all the resorts must be magical in there own way. I've loved both we have stayed at for different reasons. All star sports was so full of life and the themeing was loads of fun, whereas SSR was really relaxing and quiet. Both great but in different ways!

Day Two: The Birthday!

I woke up the husband at 6:30am on the 1st June because I was so excited that it was my Birthday and that we were in Walt Disney World! (he was less than impressed) I couldn't wait to get going! I am a big lover of celebrating my Birthday despite now being 25. I don't think that will ever change for me!

I had decided before we came whilst planning that I wanted to spend the day in Magic Kingdom, but whilst doing some fiddling around with our ADR's and after reading about Tonga Toast on the disney food blog I decided that we must first go to the Polynesian so I could try some of this deliciousness, and so we made a 9am ADR for the Kona Cafe.

After dragging Gideon out of bed (I don't think he was fully awake all through our breakfast) we caught the bus to the Magic Kingdom and then caught the Monorail round to the Poly, getting there about 10 minutes before our reservation. They saw my Birthday Button and knew we were celebrating which was cool, and we were seated promptly by the windows that look out to the monorail station.

image.jpg

Me waiting for brekkie at the Kona Cafe on my Birthday! (Terrible picture!)

We ordered our food (tonga toast for me, and a ham and cheese omlette for Gideon) and then out of the blue our lovely server brought us these bad boys!!

image.jpg

I can't say no to cupcakes for Brekkie!

I was so excited about the fact that we had Birthday cupcakes that I actually forgot to take a photo of my amazing tonga toast. (it totally lived up to expectations!)

we finished our breakfasts and then headed to the Magic Kingdom! I was so excited to begin riding things!! Everyone was so friendly and all the cast members wished me happy birthday which was awesome. We started in Adventureland where we were able to walk on to both Pirates of the Caribbean and the Jungle Cruise, we then headed over to Frontierland to see the country bear jamboree and to ride the haunted mansion which I love! We were getting close to our FP+ time for Big Thunder Mountain but the line was still only showing 20 minutes so we exchanged it for a Winnie the Pooh FP+ later in the day (I love winnie the pooh and we didn't get a chance to ride this on our last trip so I didn't want to miss it!) and rode the standby queue instead.

image.jpg

Big thunder mountain from the standby queue.

It was then time to ride Splash Mountain- another which we didn't get a chance to ride on our last trip because it was unusually chilly for Florida during March! I love Splash Mountain so much because of the amazing theming and I remember it from coming as a small child, but I still don't like the way my stomach feels when you go down the big drop eeek! Luckily for us, we were sat at the back of the boat and so hardly got wet at all, and anything that was wet soon dried off in the Florida humidity!

So after wandering around frontierland and Liberty Square a bit more we made our way over to fantasyland to use our FP+ for Winnie the Pooh and to get our first glimps of the the new Mine Train! I'm glad I changed the fastpass to Winnie the Pooh as the standby wait was looooong! We got on in 5 minutes tho which was great and I loved reliving all the tails I had heard during my childhood from the hundred acre wood!

By this point, it was almost time for our FP+ for the seven dwarfs mine train... I was a bit worried about whether our fast passes for this ride would work as ever since i'd booked them the app had only been showing them for one of us instead of both of us. Stay tuned to find out if we managed to ride!!!

So... We made our way over to the mine train to (hopefully) use our fastpasses and..... It all worked perfectly!!

I have to say, I found my magic+ and FP+ really easy during our whole trip and we never had a problem with anything. The only slight issue was that sometimes on the edges of the parks the wifi wouldnt work properly, but this was only a minor thing and happens everywhere really. I would just wait 5 minutes and then try again. We never used the kiosks either... As we never had and any need too so I can't really comment on how useful they are.

Anyway, went off topic a bit there, back to the TR.

We walked onto the mine train and were in our swinging mine cart literally within 2 minutes, which defo beat the standby queue which ranged from about 70 to 170 minutes each time we were at MK.

I really enjoyed the ride, though it was a little short IMO. The anamatronics in the mine were fab and not being a masstive coaster fan, it was just the right amount of speed and drops for me.

After the mine train (as always happens on my Birthday- no matter where we are in the world) the heavens opened and it began to rain. This was probably the most rain we saw on our holidays (as it was solid for a few hours) so after a bit of poncho wandering, we decided to head back to the resort for a couple of hours and put our feet up before dinner.

After a couple of hours resting our feet, we headed back to the park for our 7:15 ADR at Be Our Guest!!

image.jpg

Main Street when we re-entered the Park

I was very excited about be our guest as It was our first time at the restaurant and everyone is always raving about it! We checked in about 10 minutes before our ADR and then had to wait on the bridge for about 15minutes after our ADR time before we were seated. It was a little frustrating at the time as I was so excited (and the sky was threatening to rain again) but really, it was very busy, and this is the most we waited for dinner anywhere for our whole holiday, so it wasn't that bad.

image.jpg

Be our guest!

Once inside, we were seated in the grand ballroom right in the corner which was nice as we got to look over the whole room (and we were next to where they kept a pudding cart!)

image.jpg

So pretty!

Our server was really friendly and made a big fuss of us because it was my
birthday! The place is so massive and busy i'm surprised the servers managed to spend as much time with us as they did, and we didn't feel rushed at all which was good. Gideon had the steak and I had the Pork- both were delicious. For some reason, we both came out raving the most about the seasonal veggies! I don't know what they had cooked them in (butter and seasonings but not sure which) but they tasted soooo goood!!

image.jpg

Hubbys Steak

image.jpg

My Pork (coq au vin style)

And then it was time for PUDDING!!

image.jpg

Pudding cart! (Nom nom nom!)

We both chose the grey stuff....
image.jpg

Soooo pretttyyyyy

And in another moment of disney magic our server brought me another piece of grey stuff covered in birthday Mikey sprinkles and a card signed by Belle and the Beast! (I've just realised I didn't take a photo of my Birthday grey stuff- FAIL!! I'll have a look through Gid's pics later to see if he took one and post it if he did)

So after a VERY filling meal, we waddled back into MK and headed to future world where we went on Buzz Lightyears space ranger spin and saw the Monsters Inc Laugh Floor (hubby got put on the screen and made to dance... He HATES dancing... Best present ever lol!)

We then caught a bit of the electrical parade on main street which was really nice as it was again something we missed on honeymoon (I feel like we missed so much the first time!)

image.jpg

We had intended to stay and watch wishes and then make the most of the fact that the park was open till 3am, but I think yesterdays 8.5hr flight had caught up with us, and as we were returning another day, we decided to skip wishes and head back to Saratoga for a well deserved rest.

It was an awesome 25th Birthday, and it almost felt like we should be going home the next day.... But luckily for us we still had 9 days of Magic left to enjoy!!

The birthday may have been over, but the holiday was just beginning!

Day two: EPCOT

So we had a bit of a later start the next morning (later than 6:30am anyway) and planned to head to EPCOT for the day, but first we wandered from our room over to the Paddock Grill at SSR to get a light brekkie. I had wanted a pain au chocolate, but they didn't have any left :-( so instead I had a chocolate chip muffin (which quite made up for the lack of pastries) and Gideon had a blueberry muffin. We ate them outside in the sunshine, which is a luxury we never get to experience in rainy old Wales!

Then it was off to EPCOT for a day of seeing the world!

image.jpg

Obligatory spaceship earth shot

We headed straight for the land, as we had a FP+ for soaring and were on within about 5 minutes of having those shiny green mickeys light up! I think I enjoyed soaring much more this time than on our previous trip. It could have been because my nose was unblocked for once (I get a lot of hayfever) so I could actually smell everything! It definitely added to the experience!

We then went on Living with the Land. I love seeing all the plants growing, some of the winter melons were huuuugeee!!

I dragged Gideon on imagination with Figment after the land, because everyone on here talks about it with such fondness that I had to see what the fuss was all about! It was kinda cute in a cheesy way (Gideon did not agree!) and I had the song in my head for the rest of the day.

It was then over to the seas for a FP+ for the sea's with Nemo and friends! I love this ride... Heck I love every ride!

I really love the sea's at EPCOT, I find it a really peaceful place and I love spotting the rays and sea turtles. We had a chuckle when we were watching the manatees and some little girls ran up to the glass shouting 'look its a walrus!' There mother was quick to correct them! After having a brief look at all the fish we headed out, as we would be coming back to the sea's later in the day for some dinner at the Coral Reef.

As we got to the park a bit later than planned, it was now time for some lunch. We decided to give sunshine seasons a go, and it did not disappoint! We both had Mongolian beef which was delicious I could have happily had seconds! I had a key lime pie with mine and Gid had a cheesecake. There were so many pudding options, it was so hard to choose, but my Key Lime pie was definitely a winner!

image.jpg

Mongolian Beef- You must try this!!

After we felt able to move again.... (american portions are sooo generous compared to British ones!) we headed out around world showcase!

Starting in....
image.jpg

CANADAAA

I made Gideon watch all the 360 films in all the countries that had them (just so we can say we have seen them!) I've been to some of the places on the France film and to some in the China film so they brought back some nice memories. I've never been to Canada though, but the film definitely made me put it on the bucket list!

image.jpg
Cool drummers in Japan

We continued our tour around World showcase. And I shall continue with this trip report in my next post..... Stay tuned! (Cheesy!)

As promised, here is a picture of me and my Birthday 'grey stuff' that I got off hubbys phone!! It had a candle and everything!!

Anyway back to EPCOT!

After touring the world and riding the donald ride in Mexico (the wait for Malestrom was 40+ mins so we decided to skip it) we headed back to futureworld to cash in our FP+ for Mission Space! Gid begged me to ride the orange side, but I do not do bad stomach sensations and 'spinning' so he reluctantly followed me onto the green ride- which I found perfectly enjoyable as always!

We still had a couple of hours until our dinner reservations so we rode Spaceship earth (love it when you get to the top and see the earth and all the stars! Really makes me realise how tiny we are in comparison to the rest of this universe!)

We then went on Ellens energy adventure, because we love cheesy Ellen and we had 37 minutes to kill :p

After this, it was nearing the time for our ADR at the Coral Reef, so we headed back over to the sea's and checked in.

We were lucky enough to get a table by the window again (as we are only a party of 2) so had a great view of the fishes!

image.jpg

This is a terrible picture with hardly any fish in it! Silly me!!

Hubby had the Lobster and Shrimp pasta and I had a chicken dish which wasn't on the menu on our last trip but which was super tasty
image.jpg

Shrimp and Lobster Pasta

image.jpg
Chicken - (it think it was some sort of limey type sauce and it came with a corn pancake which was cool!)

And i'm not one to pass up a bit of their chocolate wave for pudding......
image.jpg
Mmmm sooo good!

After another delicious and very filling meal we headed off to the Lagoon to try and find a good spot to watch illuminations from. We ended up in.....

image.jpg
NORWAY!!! (bit of Instagram filter on this one- got a bit arty during the wait for the fireworks!!)

We must have arrived at this spot about 25minutes before illuminations started, but it had a big tree right by the left of it so I think people were put off standing there because of that.

image.jpg

Love it when they light all the lanterns along seven seas lagoon!

However, luckily for us when the fireworks started they all happened to the right of the big tree so we ended up having a pretty perfect view!!

Another fabulous day in WDW was complete and it was just a quick bus ride back to our lovely room at SSR for another good nights sleep before another fabulous day could begin!
