Trip Report The 'lets go back and do everything we didn't get a chance to do on honeymoon' trip report

Hi guys,

We have just come back from a 10 night stay in Walt Disney World and I've decided to do a trip report to combat some of those inevitable disney blues!

My husband (Gideon) and myself (Amy) went to Disney World last year (March 2013) for our honeymoon (back before I discovered these forums) and had an amazing time, but the post wedding and post disney blues on our return were just too much for us so we decided last summer that we needed to come back and do everything we never got around too the first time (along with everything we did again!)

For our honeymoon we stayed in All Star Sports and loved it- we are from the UK so trips cost a fair amount for us (because of the airfare) so we were happy to go value for our honeymoon (especially after all those wedding expenses!) as long as it meant we could be at disney! We loved All Star Sports and were quite happy to go back there- but when we booked they had 40% off rooms at Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa for UK guests along with free dining and it worked out around the same price to stay there instead with what we would normally have had to save on top for food so we treated ourselves to a little luxury and went for it!

As the time of our departure drew nearer our excitement got hard to control... My colleagues were counting down the days at work (Until they could finally stop having to listen to me talk about Disney world) and I spent all my free time browsing these forums and reading disney blogs so that we knew everything we wanted to do and had planned everything!

The day of our departure finally arrived, May 31st 2014. We had driven to Gatwick airport the night before and stayed in a hotel overnight as our flight was at 11:15 the next day, so we were fresh faced and ready to go! Our flight ended up being about 45minutes delayed- but 8 and a half hours later we landed at MCO, sped through security (no queue!! What were the chances?!?) and made our way to the Magical Express. The bus was waiting for us when we arrived, and after a few stop off's at other resorts we at last arrived at the beautiful Saratoga Springs!

image.jpg

(Please excuse my photos- they are not good quality- I was too excited running round disney world to actually stop and make my pictures look decent.)

Check in was really easy, we were given our lovely magic bands (they don't ship internationally so we had to wait until arrival). We paid for a deluxe studio- but upon arrival were assigned a one bedroom villa! The disney magic truly was at work already! No complaints from us, as we had a friend (Liz) coming to stay later in the holiday for 3 nights so more room was very welcome!)

image.jpg

Fabulous carousel pony in the check in area!

We were then transported over to our room on a golf buggy and given lots of useful tips from the bellman (lovely guy- wish i'd got his name, he was super helpful). We opened the door to our apartment, stepped inside and WOW! IT WAS INCREDIBLE!

Kitchen area

Bathroom area (Jacuzzi tub!)

image.jpg

Fab sofa (ruined by our rucksacks!)

image.jpg

Biggest, most comfortable bed EVER!

And... A balcony with the view of the water!!
image.jpg

image.jpg

It was so much nicer than anywhere we have ever stayed in before- but it didn't feel grand or like we didn't belong there. It was a very relaxed, peaceful and unassuming resort. I had read a lot of negative comments about Saratoga Springs before we arrived, but we truely had a magical stay and I would recommend it to anyone. The Magic is not lost here- its just suited to different tastes!

Outside of our building!

By the time we had got from the airport to SSR, checked in and settled down into our room it was about 7:30pm so we headed over to downtown disney on one of the boats from the resort (so quick and easy) and had a wander around (i'll expand more on our views of downtown disney in another post) before our 8:30pm reservation at Planet Hollywood.

By the time we made it into Planet Hollywood, the effects of the long day of travelling were starting to get to me, so we had a quick meal (Texas tostadas and a cobb salad for me) (buffalo tenders and a pulled pork sandwich for Gid) and then bussed it back to SSR for a good sleep because

THE NEXT DAY WAS MY BIRTHDAAAAAAAY!

Love your TR! We have never styed at Saratoga Springs, but the place looks fabulous! The grey stuff is pretty good, isn't it? We did a FP lunch reservation in January and finally got to try it!

It sounds like you had a great time in EPCOT too! We have a soft spot for Coral Reef as that was one of our very first ADR's in Disneyworld back in 2008 and we were enthralled by the giant aquarium wall! (very young children - 2 and almost 5 at the time - are apt to be!) They used to have this really great spicy fish over cheesy polenta dish, but sadly that was gone by the time we got back there in 2010. But the place is still really cool, if not in a need of a tiny bit of a TLC upgrade.

It looks like you guys are really enjoying the dining plan too! Love the foodie pics!
Can't wait to read some more!

Thanks for the lovely comments! I think SSR gets a bit of a bad rap sometimes for not being 'disney' enough, but we were nothing but pleased with all the experiences we had there from the room to the staff to the theming, it was all brilliant!

I think the giant aquariam wall has definately given me a soft spot for coral reef. I love seeing the rays and sea turtles swim by, they look so graceful.

This was are first time on the dining plan and whilst we did enjoy it I think the amount of food for us may have been too much. American portions are much bigger than British ones anyway and with the fact that we were getting puddings with quick service dinners as well as table service dinners, we got a bit too full!! However, if theres one thing I love about holidays its not having to worry about cooking so definitely a win in that sense!!

Day 3!

We decided to start our day off with a morning of lazyness at Blizzard Beach! We got there a little after 9 but the park was still very quiet. It was already roasting hot though with lovely clear blue skies. I'm afraid I have no photos from Blizzard Beach to share with you as the moment we got to the park my iphone went straight into a locker where it could remain water free for the duration of our visit! The same also
happened with my glasses which meant I saw blizzard beach through blurry eyes and ended up hurting my head a bit because I was squinting so much!

We started out on the lazy river, and were literally the only people in sight (or lack of it in my case) which was awsome. I love the lazy river... Its perfect for lazy little me! We then disembarked and rode a few of the tamer water slides (you won't catch me going down a 60ft drop!!) we didn't have to queue for anything because we got there so early so we had pretty much accomplished everything we wanted to do in the water park by mid morning and decided to head over to our next destination.

After a quick hotel pit stop we arrived at....

DISNEY'S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS!!
(I cant say that without putting on the voice of the guy who does the voiceover on the bus!!)

We were hungry by this point (it was lunchtime, and swimming- even if it is lazy swimming- does work up an appetite) so we headed in search of lunch and ended up eating in the open air area by the backlot tour and the honey I shrunk the kids playground (the name of the place has totally deserted me)

I had a greek salad
image.jpg

Gid had a buffalo chicken sandwich
image.jpg

And then we finished it off with.....
image.jpg

*humming darth vader tune to self*

They were peanut butter and chocolate darth vader cupcakes and ohhh my goodness were they good! Soo good infact that a little kid came up to our table went 'woooow' and asked if he could look at them!!! We should have given him a bite but his mum dragged him away before we got a chance!!

image.jpg

If this is how the dark side looks then count me in!

After this it was time for some rides, we did the backlot tour which I really enjoyed and then cashed in our FP+ for TSMM (Gid beat me- but I shall continue to maintain that mine just wasnt working properly! :p)

We then watched the muppets 3D movie, and afterwards went in search of an animal T-shirt for Gids brother who's a big animal from muppets fan. I couldn't resist taking a picture of these cute little details in the shop

We were good and paid for our shopping!

Stay tuned to find out where the rest of the day took us!

Wooaah sorry peeps, its been a couple of days since I posted! I'm getting behind!

We headed over to star tours after buying some muppet related merchandise and used our second FP+ to ride, I was once again NOT the rebel spy!! My new aim for Disneyworld is to be rebel spy at least once!! Is there a certain seat or is always random??

Anyways we followed our tour of the universe with a tour of the movies at the great movie ride, and then headed over to the last days showing of Indiana Jone's Epic Stunt Spectacular for our last FP+

We really enjoyed the stunt spectacular, I heard rumours on FB last week that they were going to close this. But I don't think they turned out to be true which is good cause I think it's worth seeing!

After this it was time to head to our dinner reservation, and to do this we needed to board a....

image.jpg

Friend Ship!!!

To the....

Boardwalk!!!
image.jpg

First time on a Friendship people, and first time to the Boardwalk!!

And now my lunch break at work is over so I will have to continue this post later!!

Continuing the last post now.... (2 days later... Also during work :p)

We had a wander round the boardwalk, it seems like a nice little area, would be fab in the evenings if you were staying in an EPCOT area resort! Hubby brought himself a ESPN jacket because it had been a bit rainy the last few days (turns out we didn't get caught in any rain for the rest of our trip- typical!)

Then it was off for our dinner in Kouzzina by Cat Cora. I really wanted to try this place before it shuts in the autumn and I was glad we could.

Our server was lovely and recommended me a really tasty cocktail (can't remember what it was now but it was tasty!!)
image.jpg

Tropicaaaaaalll!!

Hubby had lamb shank for dinner (massive) and I had the trio with a lamb burger, potato wedges and a lasagne type thing thats name has escaped my brain. All were extremely tasty!

Terrible atmospheric restaurant pic!

After our meals we decided to walk back to Hollywood Studios as Gid really wanted to see fantasmic. It really wasn't far to walk and made for a nice relaxing way to walk off our meals!

We got to fantasmic just as they were putting up the ropes to stop people going into the theatre area. When I asked why the CM said it was now standing room only and they would let us in 10mins before it started. We were tempted to leave, but I was convinced it wouldnt be full, and I was right!! When they finally let us there were plenty of seats on the end of the benches at the far end of the theatre. I don't think anybody stood. It wasn't a perfect view of course, but we weren't expecting that having not done a dinner package, FP or got there stupidly early!

We enjoyed the show, and tried to make a quick exit after.... A bus was there waiting which is always nice!!

We headed back to the hotel to put our feet up and have a good sleep before another day of mayhem!!

(P.s. I've got some major holiday blues at the moment, but posting this TR really is helping, so just want to say thanks for reading and for all the lovely comments. Theres plenty more to come!)

Sorry folks, business meant i've had a bit of a break from trip reporting. But i'm back now :) hard to believe that it was only a month ago that we were there!! Wish we still were!

Day 4:

So the plan for today was to head to animal kingdom, but first, I needed to satisfy my holiday craving for...

image.jpg

Mickey Waffles!!

I really need to get myself a mickey waffle maker (do they make these!? If not they totally should!

Then it was off to Animal Kingdom as planned! We arrived shortly after 9am, and decided to go a different way to what we normally do. We headed to the Tree of Life and saw its tough to be a bug (I jumped a mile!!) then instead of heading straight to Africa as we would usually we went the other way and made a bee-line for Dinoland USA!

We rode dinosaur with minimal wait, and then wandered round Dinoland for a little while before heading to our first FP+ for the Finding Nemo Musical! This was our first time for this show and I absolutely loved it!! I thought the songs were really nice (in the biiiiiig bluuueee worlllllld) and using puppets for the fishes totally worked!! I was singing it for the rest of the day!

We did a bit of mooching around Asia after the Nemo Musical (no everest for us today though- but we did get there later in the trip). It was getting scorchingly warm by this point- I think this was the first real day when the sun shone without any cloud cover and boy did it make a difference!!

By lunchtime, we were in need of some food and some shade so we headed over to the flame tree BBQ for a bit of ribs n chicken combo!!
image.jpg
image.jpg

And a pretty fab view... Ahhh contentment!

After dinner, we cashed in our FP+ for Kilamanjaro Safari's. There were lots of elephants and giraffes out on this particular visit, but it was very hot so the Lions were doing there usual lying on the rocks out of sight routine!

Once the safari was over, we headed to see the festival of the lion king in its brand new theatre (which had only just opened). It was astounding as always and never fails to dissapoint, even in its new location!

The heat was starting to get to us by this point, so we decided to give our FP+ for everest a miss (we would be back later in the trip) and headed back to our resort for some R&R and a good dip in the pool!

We had an exciting evening lined up, something a little bit special. So once it got to about 7pm we put on our glad rags and headed out to downtown disney, not to dine, but to catch a bus to the contemporary for our dinner in this place....

image.jpg

Oooo eeee!! Hubby LOVES the contemporary!! (I could live without it Tbh) and had wanted to try the California Grill for a long time! It did not disappoint!

When we got there we were seated quickly. The restaurant was very busy and rather loud but at our little table for two we were close enough to hear each other just fine.

Our server advised us to push our meals back a bit or they would come out whilst wishes was showing, so we had a bit of a wait for food but that was our choice. In the mean time I filled up on bread (BEST BREAD EVER!) sour dough and salt and pepper focaccia! Was so good!! We also had a nice glass of red each!

At 10:10 we stepped onto the contemporary viewing station for my first ever viewing of Wishes! It was spectacular and I loved how they piped the music through to us!

image.jpg

When you wish....

image.jpg

Upon a star!!!

Hehe!!! So good!!

When the show was over our food arrived with us at the exact moment we sat down. It was perfect timing!

Hubby had the Bison
image.jpg

I had the Pork Two Ways
image.jpg

Both were incredibly tasty and so full of lovely flavours! However I still couldn't finish mine (probably because I filled up on bread!)

Yum yum yum!

We hobbled over to Magic Kingdom after dinner to catch the bus back to SSR. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at the California Grill! I'd Definitely go back!

Glad rags?! Love that! (Although I was hoping you would post a picture of what you meant!)
Great view of the fireworks! Your dinner also looks tasty! We have never done the California Grill, primarily because I feel that is really a grown-up experience, and let's just say my kids have a lot of growing up to do!

Haha, this must be my Englishness coming out again in my writing! Glad rags is just a british slang for your best clothes. Actually its probably a bit of a dated slang by now, its been around since I can remember! But I loves it!

There were lots of Kids in Cali and itdidn't seem overly posh, i guess I can only really describe it as having quite a fresh contemporary vibe (which fits considering where its located :p) I'd give it a try- it is quite expensive though!
