The Land of Oz in Epcot

So Oz the Great and Powerful was a big hit at the box office, and a sequel has been confirmed. If the sequel does well too, I think it would be nice to create a land based on the franchise, as Oz is indisputably one of the most loved fantasy lands, and it hasn't properly come to theme parks yet.
(There was a 'Land of Oz' in Universal Studios Japan, but that was a half-hearted effort to say the least and it has now closed.)

Here is what I'd do...

  • 'Soarin' Over Oz' - re-theme Soarin' to make it Oz themed. The video would start with the tornado, and then soar past the hot air balloon, the witches flying, the emerald city, the munchkin city, the whimsy woods, the dark forest and the winkie country.
  • The whole of 'The Land' (next to Soarin') would be converted into the 'Garden of Oz', with yellow brick roads and amazing theming. It would also include a hot air balloon ride (similar to Flik's Flyers), and perhaps some sort of water ride?
  • Phase II would be to extend the Garden of Oz all the way to the Imagination! pavilion, and convert the Imagination Pavilion! into the Emerald City, which would include various shops, and a live Oz-themed show (perhaps like the show Oscar Diggs put on in the circus tent).
I don't know if this is any good, it is just an idea. But what do you think?
And how would you bring Oz to WDW?

While I like your ideas, I don't know that I am a big fan of bringing Oz into the parks. Typically I am against most ideas to take attractions that don't have any movie/character connection today and redo them with one, especially at Epcot. My one exception to that is that if it ultimately is to "save" the attraction then I'm for it. A good example is the slow demise of the Imagination pavilion and the recent rumors that it may receive a Phineas and Ferb overhaul. In that case, while in general I "poo poo" the idea of it, it's already a dead attraction to me and the concept of redoing it with a show like P&F that focuses on the primary theme of imagination, I can get behind.

In the case of your ideas, while bringing Oz theming into one of the parks in some way could be great, I'm not sure it makes sense at Epcot (beyond the playground they built for Flower & Garden that was ultimately just a huge advertisement). Something like Oz would fit into DHS a little better in my opinion. I love your idea for how to redo Soarin' but at the same time I like the concept of Soarin' being non-fiction as it is today (and even rumors of refurbs have continued in that direction). The idea of continuing with the hot air balloon does indeed fit though as that pavilion has always featured them and it'd fit right in (as in the idea of P&F and imagination). The path through Sunshine Seasons could easily be done up in a yellow brick rode concept so that I can see too, putting munchkins etc. along the walls that exist today on either side of it.

Extending the concept beyond one pavilion to another however I'd have issues with regardless of the theme/idea/movie/character association. The idea of Epcot is to have individual pavilions that showcase different ideas/concepts to learn from and having two pavilions with the same basic theme just would be against the idea of Epcot to me.

All in all, the ideas in general I think work and are great forward thinking concepts. Just because someone doesn't agree 100% with your idea based on their preference/opinion doesn't ever mean you should stop imagining!

I think many of you are naming failing parks as places where Fantasy films go which is wrong. Put it inside a new DHS or MK
Many? There's only been two posts! LOL :D And yes, if you read mine I said that I didn't feel it fit into Epcot and DHS would make more sense. ;)

Thanks for your feedback!

I agree that plonking Oz in the middle of Epcot may be a little inconsistent with the concept of the park. The only reason I did this is because I think 'Soarin' Over Oz' is a great idea, and The Land isn't really too popular so it would be a good way to renew it.
The Imagination! Pavilion becoming Emerald City was also just a suggestion. It was probably a little ambitious considering it is a pyramid and the Emerald City isn't! I agree that Phineas and Ferb would probably be a better solution, especially if they want to maintain the theme of imagination.

But I would also argue that Oz isn't any less suited to Epcot than Finding Nemo, so I don't see my idea as an impossibility. The other place I would recommend for Oz would be Fantasy Land, although seeing as they are nearing completion of the recent expansion, I doubt they'd want to build anything new there for a while!

As for DHS, I just can't see it working there. I don't think the lands in that park are well enough themed for them to pull it off. I'm not saying they can't do it, it is just with the rumours about Star Wars and Pixar basically taking over the park, I can't see where Oz would fit in.

And it may be able to work at Animal Kingdom, but I wouldn't be in favour of that. It would be almost as illogical as building an Avatar Land there! Haha who would think of that?! :D

But anyway I would love to see Oz somewhere in WDW, that is basically all I'm saying. :)

This is part of the EPCOT dedication speech. If you can figure out a way to make Oz relate to any of those categories, I'll give you a trophy :)

Keep the characters out of EPCOT!

You could say the same about Nemo though... ;)

I'd go with... Human Achievements celebrated through Imagination... :)

Even though, I'd prefer Oz in HS, I'd love to see something different where the Circle of Life is... Something about it just doesn't sell it for me... Maybe an Oz film of some sort? Or an Oz film where Captain EO is would be nice...

I honestly would realllly like to see Oz in MGM(Disney Studios). I think the Emerald City would be a fine replacement for the New York City backdrop they got.Towering crystals would fit the setting of a movie-based park more so than EPCoT which I associate with the future and real countries.

Yes! I'd love a ride once you're within the city. One in the same vein as Harry Potter with a very mobile ride vehicle and elements than contain real features and movie screens where we sit on a mobile seat and we're taken through all of Oz...get swept by the tornado, attacked by lions, tigers AND bears, face down some flying monkeys, ride through the spooky graveyard while we're saved by Glenda's bubbles and taken through the top of the tower for a full bird's eye view of the Emerald city...all the while we can see the yellow brick stretch for miles below us! This would be an excellent new feature to Disney Studios

This is kind of what I had in mind for 'Soarin' Over Oz', but I guess it would be more exciting if the ride was more like HPFJ.

And I like the idea about the bubbles instead of broomsticks.

Also, the queue line could be through Kansas, and then at the beginning of the ride you are taken up in the tornado into Oz! And at the end you are taken back via the ruby slippers, although I think Warner Bros. has the rights to them so that would be difficult.

Wow I never knew movie studios could have rights to something as simple as shoes..although we do get to see Dorothy in the Great Movie Ride..perhaps there are ways around this!

Apparently Warner Bros. are refusing to allow Disney to even mention the ruby slippers in the Oz the Great and Powerful films... I suppose they're just being awkward because they're afraid Disney will claim one of their most valuable films (Wizard of Oz).
But yeah I'm sure there would be some way around it.
Did you know, Warner Bros. also have copyrighted the shade of green of the Wicked Witch of the West. So for Oz the Great and Powerful they had to use a slightly different shade... its pretty ridiculous really!

That's interesting, because Disney was able to mention the Ruby Slippers in Return to Oz...a movie sequel they made in the early 80s. And for a while, the slippers were on display at the Great Movie Ride, unless I'm remembering wrong...
