Posts in the SSE thread have got me wondering about what people think of the Epcot wand. Personally I don't mind it - probably I actually like it. What about you?

Wand

Well im one of those people who like the wand, but ive only ever been to Epcot before the wand was put up so if they were to take it away i would be in shock. The same way all the peeps who went before the wand went up are about it suddenly appearing. However the support tower is UGLY, usually we walk the other way past SSE, but when we walked by the tower, i agree its ugly. The Support tower is ugly, but i like the actual wand....!

I HATE the wand, but I don't mind the concept (went with other because of that). I just don't like the idea of puting Mickey's hand with a magic wand in Epcot. That entirely destroys any grandeur left for the park. However, having the Epcot label over top is not bad, and it looks really nice at night. I do agree the tower looks bad, so why not work that into the design and make it an industrial, modern-art piece? Just a thought.

Wand must go, something over SSE... let's talk.

It could be ANY hand... It's a Walt Disney TOON hand... not specificly Mickey's hand...

Actually from all the marketing done during the 2000 event, it showed Sorcerer Mickey with his hand and wand over SSE (which was floating over his head). I agree the physical hand could be one, but it looks like Mickey and was marketed as that. Even so, I will go along to say any Disney toon hand with a magic wand would look equally inappropriate.

I don't really mind it. I liked SSE before the wand went on, so it would be fine with me if they took it down, but it dosen't really bother me.

On our last trip we went with a newbie, and with someone who hadn't been since the wand had been up. The newbie LOVED it. She thought it was so beautiful and took a picture of SSE for her cell phone background. I told her how so many people didn't like the wand and she couldn't understand why! Her DH, hadn't seen it before, and thought it looked better without.

I can't believe that this is split 50/50 so far. That horrible thing completely takes away from the awe inspiring geosphere. It's basically a symbol of the current "overlayism" of Epcot.

You bring up a wonderful observation here—"overlayism." I agree.

I've gotten used to the wand now, but I think SSE looked way better without it. It takes away from the beauty of the SSE geosphere itself.

My decision now is quite split on this situation. Looking back at all my Photos and comparing them with ones that I have taken since 1999 I think that I prefer Spaceship Earth with out the wand. For me it does not fit in with the concept of Spaceship Earth. When I am there in person though I do kind of like looking at the want seeing it shine and sparkle.

I think overall it was quite a good idea for the Millenium Year run but for me they should have taken it down after this. If they could make it work somewhere else in the park or one of the other parks it would be great, but my issue is that it does not fit with Spaceship Earth's theme where it currently stands.

I thought I remember reading a rumor that it might be taken down because it will be replaced by projection equipment to make it look like its rotating at night. Anyone hear more about this?

You know the Wand ruins SSE because when your at the finale of the ride floating around in "space" going back to earth you can see these ugly shapes on the top of the sphere (im assuming its the stars). It ruins the whole ride experince and takes me right out of the fantasy. Alot of folks here are all like "hurr dont change/replace SSE!" and yet your a-ok with the wand creating an eyesore at the end of the ride.
