The Imagineering Field Guide to Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World,
by The Disney Imagineers. it's on pre-order at Amazon and is supposed to be released on June 1st. It was mentioned on a Jim Hill column last week, and it seems like it'll be an interesting book. Anyone has any info on it?

No real info on it at this point (at least that I've heard). This has been showing up in my Amazon recommendations since at least February (and I've had it preordered since then, too :slurp: )

From what I understand in the description, it will be basically a book that gives backstories on each attraction/building/etc. Anybody have any better info?

I wanna pre-order it too, but if it's interesting tidbits about the park and stuff. If it's too technical, I don't want it. By too technical I mean, dimensional specs and the like, you know?

And they're supposed to be a series, apparently, covering everything in WDW. Hopefully the resorts, too, and even Downtown Disney!

The first in a series of pocket-sized paperbacks will answer the question, "What would it be like to walk through the Disney Theme Parks with an Imagineer by your side?" The Imagineering Field Guide to The Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World provides that experience: pointing out details and telling stories, back stories, and Imagineering insights never before heard, condensed into a portable, easily-referenced park guide. You'll never spend time at Walt Disney World the same way again. Each spread contains fascinating textual information and related images (drawings, photos, graphics) such as:
Yeah, that's the whole quote, it just kind of ends like that. Anyway, it looks like just what you're looking for, MKCustodial. Interestingly enough, I'll be in the Magic Kingdom on the release day, so I'll definately pick one up.

I've read it already, and its great! Basicly the imagineers give thoughts, stories, and suggestions to how you can create things better. Its a good read!

But it's not out yet...

And if it's about creating, I'll pass. I thought it was about WDW. There are a lot of books about Disneyland out there, and I thought this could be a goo, informative one about WDW.

I think we're getting books mixed up here. There's a book that's already out called "The Imagineering Way." It's a business-motivation-type book. How to use out-of-the-box thinking in your boring corporate environment.

We're talking here about the "Imagineering Field Guide" that should be a building-by-building explanation of the different parts of the Magic Kingdom (and hopefully future editions on EPCOT, AK, MGM, etc).

There's also a (unrelated) book called "The Disney Way" with an accompanying "The Disney Way Fieldbook"..

just to clear anything up...

I got my copy yesterday, the book is shaped like a park map, which makes it a bit hard to read. But the book is filled with great info, and a must have for Disney lovers. I know you all will like it

So it's like a big map with facts written in it and not like an actual book?

No no, its an actual book...its just that thin rectangle shape (like that of a park map) that makes reading the lines a bit hard. The info is fantastic, it even goes into detail about the Timekeeper.

I picked this up over the weekend, and I highly recommend it. It's relatively cheap (10 bucks for me), and it's packed with fascinating (but not too technical) insights into MK.

Essentially, it's all about the ideas that went, and continue to go, into the design of MK. A brief history of DL is provided, before the book goes into sort of a walkthrough of the park.

Each land is covered separately. The writer gives details about how the architectural styles for each land were picked, how they work together, how they transition into other lands, etc. Like I already said, this is not a technical discussion, so anybody can enjoy it. The book talks about things like how the architectural styles on the border of Adventureland and Frontierland were deliberately chosen to be somewhat appropriate to both themes, so the transition is seamless from land to land.

The book is packed with little details like that to explain how the Imagineers work very carefully to maintain consistent, thorough theming in each section of the park. The book is almost surprisingly straightforward in acknowledging that the themes, while based on real world ideas and places, are intentionally distorted and romanticized to appeal to a natural optimism within the park guests.

Of course, there's plenty of talk about the attractions, too, and how they contribute to the stories each land tries to tell.

The layout is basically text with lots of concept sketches for different rides, shops, lands, etc. I like the rectangular shape personally. It makes the book easy to carry around or stuff in your pocket and...I dunno...it just looks "fun."

So bottom line: If you have any interest in the themes that define each inch of the MK and you want to know more about why Imagineers made the decisions they did to bring those themes to life, you should pick this up. Hardcore Disneyites may not learn a lot of new stuff, but the book does a great job of helping present the mindset of the people who make the parks what they are.

I saw something about this book too, looks really cool.

I think they showed some of their sketches, and how they made their way into the attractions.

ex. two skeletons playing chess......their in the queue for POTC

I read the whole thing this weekend. Its not very long but it is still a very good book. The only complaint I have is that I wish they had a histroy section talking about some of the older rides..
